Living on borders and in margins., keeping intact on both sides of the border. one's shifting and multiple identity and integrity, is like trying to swim ina new element, an "alien" element. There is an exhilara­ tiolJi in being a participant in the funherevolution of humankind, G.E.A. in being "worked" on .. 1 have the sense thatoertain "Iaculdes"­ ,not just in me but in every border resident,. colored or non­ colored-l'I;nd dormant areas of consciousness are beingacti­ v.ated, awakened. Strange, huh? And y,es, the "alien" element has become familiar-never comfortable, not with society's clamor to uphold the old,. to rejoin the flock, to go with the herd. No, nm comfortable but home. This book, then, speaks of my existence. My preoccupations with the inner life of the Self, and with the struggle of that Self amidst adversity and violation; with the confluence of primordial images; with the unique positionings consciousness takes at these confluent streams; and with my almost instinctive urge to communicate, to speak, to write about life on the borders, life in the shadows. Books saved my sanity,. knowledge opened the locked places in me and taught me first how to survive and then how to soar.     Soapstone: Celebrating Women Writers Study Groups 2015 - 2021 ====================================================== Reading Claudia Rankine, led by Ashley Toliver Six Saturday Mornings, 10:00 to 12, April – May, 2021 via Zoom Few books of modern poetry have so handily met and captured the zeitgeist of our collective psyche as Claudia Rankine's 2004 book, Citizen. Published in the midst of the nation’s spreading awareness of police brutality, racism and the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement, Citizen became an instant classic for its everyday depictions of the micro-aggressions faced by Black Americans, for whom the personal is always political. www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/claudia- rankine What’s interested me about Rankine’s career is how her work has moved from the intimately personal— permitting us only mere glimpses of the surrounding world— to the largely collective in both voice and concern. When I first encountered Claudia’s work, I was a college sophomore. While browsing the poetry stacks of my college library, I discovered her first two books, Nothing In Nature is Private and The End of the Alphabet. Both books swept me off my feet with the intensity of their inward gaze. In this study group, I’m interested in exploring the transition in subjectivity and form that takes shape in the space between Rankine’s The End of the Alphabet and Citizen. We’ll also explore selected readings in the form of additional excerpts from her work, interviews, articles, and/or whatever else we discover along the way. It’s my hope that this class will be an open, easy-going space where we can discuss Rankine’s work with fluidity, ease, and good humor.

How is it different from recent "attempts" at feminist juris- prudence,' if at all? How is it different from jurisprudential at- tempts to ground homosexuality, 2 if at all? And if lesbian jurisprudence exists, what are its characteristics, its concerns, its methodologies? And if lesbian jurisprudence is being created, what should be its characteristics, its concerns, its methodologies? This article poses the question of lesbian jurisprudence. In order to understand the complexity of the question, this article first offers some preliminary definitions for lesbianism as well as a brief explication of jurisprudence. Combining lesbian and juris- prudence into a question, this article limits the question by re- jecting two possible answers: that lesbian jurisprudence is feminist jurisprudence and that lesbian jurisprudence is a paradigm capable of universal application. The article then seeks to give present im- aginative content to the question by drawing upon mythical meta- phors from our collective past and by surveying science fiction conceptions of the future. The mythical metaphors serve a pur- pose similar to that served by the common embodiment of justice as a woman blindfolded and holding a scale.

While historians have written prolifically about the Ludlow Massacre, which took place during the 1913- 1914 Colorado coal strike led by the United Mine Workers of America, there has been a curious lack of attention to the Columbine Massacre that occurred not far away within the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike, led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

So for every man who has ever lived, in this Universe there shines a star. But every one of those stars is a sun, often far more brilliant and glorious than the small, nearby star we call the Sun. And many - perhaps most - of those alien suns have planets circling them. So almost certainly there is enough land in the sky to give every member of the human species, back to the first ape-man, his own private, world-sized heaven - or hell. How many of those potential heavens and hells are now inhabited, and by what manner of creatures, we have no way of guessing; the very nearest is a million times farther away than Mars or Venus, those still remote goals of the next generation. But the barriers of distance are crumbling; one day we shall meet our equals, or our masters, among the stars. Men have been slow to face this prospect; some still hope that it may never become reality. Increasing numbers, however, are asking: "Why have such meetings not occurred already, since we ourselves are about to venture into space?" Why not, indeed? Here is one possible answer to that very reasonable question.

The turbulence of the Mexican Revo­ lution began in 1910 with the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz by the movement of Francisco 1. Madero. In 1913 !he tenuous regime of Madero was violently replaced by that of Victoriano Huerta, and the turmoil continued unabated. Faced with major revolutions led by Venustiano Carranza, Francisco Villa, and Emiliano Zapata, Huerta fled Mexico in mid-1914 as the opposition armies con­ verged on Mexico City. Despite the efforts of the new victors to achieve a unified government at the Convention of Aguascalientes in 1914, Carranza's Constitutionalists soon fell into quarreling among themselves and the Revolution entered its most violent phase. Representing the Constitutionalist government of Mexico, Venustiano Carranza and Alvaro Obreg6n arrayed themselves against Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata, who purported to represent the cause of the Convention.
