KIDSCRAWL Participants Handbook Friday, September 12, 2014, 11am – 2pm PLEASE NOTE: PARTICIPATION IN KIDSCRAWL REQUIRES PRE-REGISTRATION. REGISTRATION opens June 3, 2014 and all routes are done on a first come, first served basis. What is KIDSCRAWL? A Fieldtrip at Supercrawl! Galleries open their doors especially for students on the Friday afternoon before Supercrawl. Students have the chance to engage with and discuss a variety of work, and will also be exposed to careers and prospects related to visual arts. Elementary and Secondary School students registered for this program will have an exclusive opportunity to preview work by local and international visual artists and explore exciting cultural spaces as part of Hamilton’s hottest cultural event! Teachers can bring their class to James Street North and participate in this self-guided art crawl. (Transportation is the responsibility of the teacher). The 2014 KIDSCRAWL project is produced by the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts for Supercrawl. The visual arts curriculum is intended to help students develop their creativity, as well as the ability to communicate with other people through visual images. In developing the ability to analyse and describe works of art from various periods and in different styles, they will also learn to understand and appreciate a wide variety of artworks. Art education helps students to be active and engaged citizens by connecting them to their surroundings, encouraging them to question and to think and feel deeply. It enriches lives, and gives life meaning. This is a great learning opportunity for participating students to learn protocol and etiquette for behaviour in galleries. The Creative Industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. Involving our children in innovative arts programming nurtures their creative capacity for the future and enriches the developmental growth of our community. Choose Your Route There are over 25 participating locations (galleries and /or community organizations) and 2 designated lunch spots for the 2014 KIDSCRAWL event, and some will include interactive arts-based activities. It is estimated that during the designated time of the event (11am – 2pm), teachers can expect to guide their students through 5 locations and 1 designated lunch spot for approximately 25 minute stops at each space. Re-grouping and travel time between locations should be factored into each visit to ensure your group arrives on time at the next location. To ensure a smooth flow and to prevent overcrowding at participating venues, teachers will need to register their route for each individual class prior to attending KIDSCRAWL. Registration is on a first come first served basis, all are encouraged to enroll early to secure your desired route. To facilitate this process, access all Kidscrawl Field Trip information at www.hcarts.ca/kidscrawl and complete a KIDSCRAWL Choose Your Route Registration Form. Teachers must then register their desired route on a first come first served basis. All are encouraged to enroll early to secure your desired locations. If selection is unavailable, another route will be assigned where possible. Transportation Registered neighbourhood schools are welcome to “crawl by foot” and join the KIDSCRAWL event at their chosen starting point. For the majority travelling by bus, the HSR is an effective way to join the crawl. Additionally, drop off and pick up points for chartered buses have been designated in two spots for 2014: 1. Murray Street at James Street North adjacent to the south lawn of Liuna Station, or 2. York Street in front of the Hamilton Public Library - Central branch (buses arriving at this location can wait on west side of Park Street for bus spots to open up on York) 2 Lunch Spots The 2014 KIDSCRAWL event has allocated time and space for teachers and students to factor in a lunch break. Two official lunch spot locations have been added to the KIDSCRAWL map including the Jackson Square area and Cathedral Place. Teachers will guide their students through 5 KIDSCRAWL locations and 1 designated lunch spot for an approximate 25 minute stop at each venue. Re-grouping and travel time between locations should be factored in to each visit to ensure your group arrives on time at the next location. Teachers will select their preferred lunch spot time and location on the Choose Your Route Registration Form and will be administered on a first come first serve basis. Students are expected to bring their own lunch. Some opportunities do exist for students to buy en route in Jackson Square, the Hamilton Farmer’s Market or other local vendors. Volunteers KIDSCRAWL is organizing and managing a volunteer base comprised mainly of Special High Skills Major Students in partnership with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, along with Supercrawl volunteers on the day of the event. Delegated groups of volunteers will be assigned to key transportation drop off/pick up points, greeting groups as they arrive and assisting with touring components at each participating site. Supervision To participate in KIDSCRAWL, students need to be registered with a participating teacher, class and/or school. Students are to be supervised by accompanying teachers at all points throughout the KIDSCRAWL event. The suggested ratio of adult to student is 1: 15. Conduct Road safety Supercrawl organizers have been able to leverage street closures over a 3 day period (Friday, September 12 - Sunday, September 14). New for 2014, traffic on York Boulevard and James Street North will close on Friday, September 12 at 10 am. Main streets running east west will continue to be open, including King Street, King William, York Boulevard, Wilson Street and Barton Street. Throughout the duration of KIDSCRAWL, teachers and supervisors should exercise common sense caution as would be typical when managing groups of children and youth in an urban downtown setting, paying special attention when crossing the road between locations. It is recommended that commuting behaviour be discussed with classes prior to the event. Gallery protocol and etiquette Visiting a gallery or cultural space can be an educational and entertaining experience. This is a great learning opportunity for students attending KIDSCRAWL to learn protocol and etiquette for behaviour in galleries. Please discuss the following behavioural guidelines with students prior to attending 3 KIDSCRAWL: A general golden rule to emphasize is the concept of looking at a work of art, versus touching it, unless otherwise indicated. General awareness of movement around sculptures and artwork should be observed to avoid accidents. Avoid blocking others view of the art. While admiring work is encouraged, ensure that others have a chance to see it too, particularly in smaller spaces. Galleries are generally quiet spaces – please keep talking to a minimum and if you need to talk; keep your voice low and speak briefly. Cell phone and loud headphones should not be used inside galleries as this may disrupt other’s experience of the art. Photography may be prohibited – look out for signage at the gallery or ask a volunteer or gallery attendant whether photographs are permitted. Do not bring food and drink into galleries as it is commonly not permitted. REGISTER YOUR CLASS! Registration opens June 3, 2014 and is available on a first come first served basis!
