Box 9818, Beijing, 100029 Peoples Republic of China Email address: [email protected] September 23, 2002 Abstract Myrmekite, an intergrowth of plagioclase and quartz vermicules, often occurs in felsic-to-intermediate, calc-alkalic plutonic and gneissic rocks. Several hypotheses for myrmekite genesis are briefly reviewed and discussed. The proportional relationship between the volume of quartz vermicules and the An value of plagioclase is consistent with the hypothesis or replacement, solid state exsolution, and recrystallization of primary plagioclase. (1) Perthitic albite and K- feldspar relicts in myrmekite and (2) swapped myrmekite between two differently oriented K-feldspar crystals obviously indicate that myrmekite is formed by nibble replacement of K-feldspar by myrmekitic plagioclase because of modification by Ca-bearing sodic emanation or fluid. Myrmekite of different morphology and spatial distribution are of the same metasomatic origin. The myrmekite that was produced during deformation should be later than that formed prior to deformation. Characteristics of myrmekite Myrmekite was first described by Michel-Lévy (1874) and named by Sederholm (1897) as an intergrowth of plagioclase and quartz vermicules. Myrmekite is commonly observed in felsic-to-intermediate calc-alkalic granitic rocks (but not in alkalic-tending plutonic rocks) and in granitic gneisses of similar composition. 2 On the basis of the geologic environment, Phillips (1974) classified myrmekite in the following ways: 1. rim myrmekite, occurring at the contact of plagioclase with another differently oriented K-feldspar; 2. intergranular myrmekite, situated at the boundary between two differently oriented K-feldspars; 3. -

CLANS AND SHIMULLS/SIBS OF WESTERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY RICHARD L. CARRICO DEPARTMENT OF AMERICAN INDIAN STUDIES, SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY In San Diego County and northern Baja California the social and political make-up of the Kumeyaay (Ipai and Tipai) is fairly well documented for the settlements and villages east of the western foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains and into the western Imperial Desert. By contrast, the traditional and historical distribution and names of the coastal and inland valley clans is far less documented. This paucity of data for the western clans is largely a function of the removal of these clans from the region by European colonialists and their settlement in the interior of San Diego County by 1875. The goal of this study is to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the precontact and early proto-historic coastal and inland valley clans through the use of Spanish mission records and early historic documents. As a result of this study 10 coastal and inland valley clans have been identified and their general area of distribution plotted. The combination of earlier studies with the current study provides a much clearer and more complete depiction of the Kumeyaay clans of San Diego County. The Kumeyaay people of San Diego County trace their family lineage back to a distant past and often to animals and creatures from another time. In spite of decades of study, traditional Kumeyaay social organization remains unclear. The basic unit appears to have been kin groups referred to by a variety of names including sib, shimulls, cimuLs, gens, and gentes. -

The Schulte Family in Alpine, California
THE SCHULTE FAMILY IN ALPINE, CALIFORNIA The two things that have led to my connection and fascination with Alpine are my visits with my grandmother, Marguerite (Borden) Head or “Zuella”, and the Foss family in the 1950s, and the exquisite art work of Leonard Lester (see separate articles titled The Marguerite (Borden) and Robert Head Family of Alpine” and “Leonard Lester – Artist”). Most of the information on the Schulte family presented here is from 1) conversations with my father, Claude H. Schulte; 2) my grandfather, Christopher Henry Schulte, whose personal history was typed by his daughter, Ruth in 1942; and 3) supplemented by interviews with and records kept by my Aunt Ruth Schulte, including her mother’s diary. Kenneth Claude Schulte – December 2009 Christopher Henry Schulte, who immigrated to the United States in 1889, was born in Twistringen, Germany on 21 Dec 1874 and died 1 May 1954 in Lemon Grove, San Diego Co., California. In Arkansas he was married on 28 Jul 1901 to Flora Birdie Lee, born 16 Oct. 1883, Patmos, Hempstead Co., Arkansas and died 11 Jul 1938, Alpine, San Diego Co., California. Mayerle U.S. Bureau of Mines STUDIES RELATED TO WILDERNESS Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and the Joint Conference Report on Senate Bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as "wilderness," "wild," or "canoe" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of min eral surveys of the Sill Hill (5-304), Hauser (5-021), and Caliente (5-017) Roadless Areas, Cleveland National Forest, San Diego dpunty, California. SUMMARY The Sill Hill, Hauser, and Caliente Roadless Areas comprise approximately 20,000 acres in the Cleveland National Forest, San Diego County, Calif, (fig. 1). As geologists, we all recognize the great importance of field experiences. This year's meeting includes a diverse and excellent set of field trips. Collectively, this year's field trips visit a broad spectrum of the geologic features of Illinois and Missouri that range in age from Precambrian to Quaternary. These trips present a number of new ideas and interpretations that will broaden the perspectives of all field trip participants. Your participation, interaction, and exchange of ideas with the field trip leaders are encouraged at all times These trips are the culmination of the time and energy freely given by a number of individuals. 4 Tribal Nations of San Diego County This chapter presents an overall summary of the Tribal Nations of San Diego County and the water resources on their reservations. A brief description of each Tribe, along with a summary of available information on each Tribe’s water resources, is provided. The water management issues provided by the Tribe’s representatives at the San Diego IRWM outreach meetings are also presented. 4.1 Reservations San Diego County features the largest number of Tribes and Reservations of any county in the United States. There are 18 federally-recognized Tribal Nation Reservations and 17 Tribal Governments, because the Barona and Viejas Bands share joint-trust and administrative responsibility for the Capitan Grande Reservation. All of the Tribes within the San Diego IRWM Region are also recognized as California Native American Tribes. These Reservation lands, which are governed by Tribal Nations, total approximately 127,000 acres or 198 square miles. The locations of the Tribal Reservations are presented in Figure 4-1 and summarized in Table 4-1. Two additional Tribal Governments do not have federally recognized lands: 1) the San Luis Rey Band of Luiseño Indians (though the Band remains active in the San Diego region) and 2) the Mount Laguna Band of Luiseño Indians. Note that there may appear to be inconsistencies related to population sizes of tribes in Table 4-1. This is because not all Tribes may choose to participate in population surveys, or may identify with multiple heritages. 4.2 Cultural Groups Native Americans within the San Diego IRWM Region generally comprise four distinct cultural groups (Kumeyaay/Diegueno, Luiseño, Cahuilla, and Cupeño), which are from two distinct language families (Uto-Aztecan and Yuman-Cochimi). -
