The top layers of this marker limestone on the southwestern limb of the St. Bride’s Syncline contain the earliest trilobites found in this map area. Box 9818, Beijing, 100029 Peoples Republic of China Email address: [email protected] September 23, 2002 Abstract Myrmekite, an intergrowth of plagioclase and quartz vermicules, often occurs in felsic-to-intermediate, calc-alkalic plutonic and gneissic rocks. Several hypotheses for myrmekite genesis are briefly reviewed and discussed. The proportional relationship between the volume of quartz vermicules and the An value of plagioclase is consistent with the hypothesis or replacement, solid state exsolution, and recrystallization of primary plagioclase. (1) Perthitic albite and K- feldspar relicts in myrmekite and (2) swapped myrmekite between two differently oriented K-feldspar crystals obviously indicate that myrmekite is formed by nibble replacement of K-feldspar by myrmekitic plagioclase because of modification by Ca-bearing sodic emanation or fluid. Myrmekite of different morphology and spatial distribution are of the same metasomatic origin. The myrmekite that was produced during deformation should be later than that formed prior to deformation. Characteristics of myrmekite Myrmekite was first described by Michel-Lévy (1874) and named by Sederholm (1897) as an intergrowth of plagioclase and quartz vermicules. Myrmekite is commonly observed in felsic-to-intermediate calc-alkalic granitic rocks (but not in alkalic-tending plutonic rocks) and in granitic gneisses of similar composition. 2 On the basis of the geologic environment, Phillips (1974) classified myrmekite in the following ways: 1. rim myrmekite, occurring at the contact of plagioclase with another differently oriented K-feldspar; 2. intergranular myrmekite, situated at the boundary between two differently oriented K-feldspars; 3.

A new middle Cambrian trilobite with a specialized cephalon from Shandong Province, North China. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 65 (4): 709–718. Trilobites achieved their maximum generic diversity in the Cambrian, but the peak of morphological disparity of their cranidia occurred in the Middle to Late Ordovician. Early to middle Cambrian trilobites with a specialized cephalon are rare, especially among the ptychoparioids, a group of libristomates featuring the so-called “generalized” bauplan. Here we describe an unusual ptychopariid trilobite Phantaspis auritus gen. et sp. nov. from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) Mantou Formation in the Shandong Province, North China. This new taxon is characterized by a cephalon with an extended anterior area of double-lobate shape resembling a pair of rabbit ears in later ontogenetic stages; a unique type of cephalic specialization that has not been reported from other trilobites. Such a peculiar cephalon as in Phantaspis provides new insights into the variations of cephalic morphology in middle Cambrian trilobites, and may represent a heuristic example of ecological specialization to predation or an improved discoidal enrollment. National Museum This is the fifth in the series of papers designed to care for changes necessary in the names of Cambrian fossils. When the fourth paper was published it was hoped that further changes would be so few and so obvious that they could be incorporated in the Cambrian bibliographic summary, and would not be required to appear first in a separate paper. But even now it is impossible to gather all of the known errors for rectification in this paper. For example, correc- tion of some errors must await the opportunity to examine the speci- mens because the published illustrations, obviously showing incorrect generic determinations, are too poor to permit a proper understanding of the fossil. In the other instances where new generic designations are clearly indicated, erection of new genera should await the pub- lication of a paper with illustrations, because better-preserved speci- mens are in hand, or undescribed species portray the generic charac- teristics more fully and should therefore be chosen as the genotypes.
