    22/11/2001 Nation mourns (HL) KUALA LUMPUR, Wed. - The nation today began mourning the passing of the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj. The King, 75, passed away at 11.57 this morning after a prolonged illness. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the King's death in an address to the nation over radio and television at 1.50pm. "With great sadness and regret, I announce that the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj passed away at 11.57 this morning at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre," he said. The King died two months after he was first admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for a heart surgery to implant a pacemaker. Dr Mahathir declared a seven-day period of national mourning and urged all relevant parties to fly their flags at half-mast. In Selangor, the State Government declared 40 days of mourning. The Prime Minister also announced the cancellation of all official government functions for today and tomorrow as a mark of respect. Dr Mahathir said the new Sultan of Selangor would be proclaimed tomorrow. The King had been on ventilator and under heavy sedation since Sunday, when his breathing and kidney functions were supported by machines. The King's earlier heart failure progressively worsened since Oct 6, and he suffered renal failure on Oct 15. His condition deteriorated rapidly since then. The King's condition took a turn for the worse on Nov 17 and had to be on the ventilator in the Cardiac Care Unit of the Singapore hospital.

The zakat was handed over to the Sultan by Gas Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap at a ceremony held at Istana Alam Shah. The zakat payment was for the financial year ending 2019. Also present at the ceremony were Pengerusi Majlis Agama Islam Selangor, YAD Dato’ Setia Haji Mohamed Khusrin Bin Munawi, Pengerusi Lembaga Zakat Selangor, YAM Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Syed Anwar Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail and Dato’ Seri Utama Diraja Mufti Selangor, Sahibus Samahah Dato’ Setia Haji Mohd. Lexis 3 : « Borrowing / L’emprunt » 11 Lexical Borrowing in Malaysian English: Influences of Malay1 Tan Siew Imm2 Abstract During its evolution in the region that is today Malaysia, English has come into contact with a range of diverse, typologically-distinct languages. All these languages have influenced the lexicon of Malaysia English (ME), but it is Malay that has contributed to some of the most remarkable characteristics of this variety of English (see, for example, Lowenberg [1986 and 2000]; and Morais [2001]). This paper explores how the English-Malay contact has resulted in the incorporation of Malay features into the lexicon of ME. Using a corpus-based approach, the study analysed a comprehensive range of borrowed features extracted from the author’s Malaysian English Cewspaper Corpus (MEN Corpus) for the linguistic processes behind the borrowing phenomenon. Haugen’s [1950] groundbreaking work on lexical borrowing provides the theoretical framework of this study. It is proposed that the underlying systematicity of the processes involved is reflected in the linguistic outcomes, and that there is much potential for corpus-based lexicography where ME is concerned.

    22/11/2001 The People's King AS the nation mourns the passing of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al- Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj, his subjects will always remember him as "the Ruler with the soul of the people". He was installed as the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1999. The King, who celebrated his 75th birthday in June, performed his duties outstandingly with dignity and honour. As a Ruler who placed the interest of his subjects, the nation and Islam above all else, he was anxious that the mosque should not be used for political purposes or as an instrument to cause a split within the Muslim community. Nor did he want the Malays to be torn asunder by political differences, a plea he made during a visit to Kampung Baru in the Federal Capital soon after his installation. As the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he got on well with the centre. He understood scrupulously the constitutional scope of his duties. True to his role in maintaining unity, he did not allow the palace to be dragged into politics. Nor was he demanding. An attribute cherished by the Government was his ability to listen to advice from the Council of Ministers. This, too, endeared him to the people. He was a very informal and modest man. And a keen golfer too. His love for Selangor was only rivalled by his love for the country. This and his personal relationship with Tun Razak whom he trusted absolutely, apparently tipped the balance in his decision to cede a huge swathe of land to the Federal Government for the establishment of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur on Feb 1, 1974.

With an aim of analysing walkability and public realm, the paper investigates South Klang City Centre (South Klang CC), a traditional but almost forgotten city in Malaysia. The method was to employ Space Syntax, a set of techniques for the representation, quantification and interpretation of spatial configuration in buildings and settlements. The investigation on the urban fabric revealed the complex facts that a) the morphology of the city has deeper meaning in the qualities projected by the city; and b) the aftermath of the contemporary layers of highways actually fragment and almost crack the city’s structure. The findings imply that the centrality is a coalition between syntax and the history, resulting tension in the urban configuration. There are three typologies of centralities observed, namely, i) South Klang CC with high syntax values and fragmented public realm, ii) South Klang CC with high syntax values and precarious public realm and iii) South Klang CC with altered (new) but lower syntax values and diversified pubic realm. Such findings accelerate innovation on community driven spatial interventions and regenerations at the micro and macro scales respectively.

Menjadi pusat penempatan sejak 4,500 tahun dahulu, pusat pemerintahan kerajaan Selangor ini turut dikenali sebagai Bandar Diraja, sebelum Shah Alam yang menjadi ibu negeri. Sebagai pusat pemerintahan, pelbagai lakaran sejarah terukir di daerah ini yang rata-rata tidak diketahui umum khususnya di bahagian selatan bandar. Atas sebab itu inisiatif Jejak Warisan Klang (JWK) diwujudkan meliputi 18 lokasi unik di sekitar bandar ini, yang mana setiap satu daripadanya mempunyai nilai sejarah tersendiri yang cukup tinggi. Penyelidik Sejarah Selangor, Faisal Surani, berkata inisiatif itu dimulakan sejak 2010 dengan lebih 20 lokasi dikenal pasti pada peringkat awal, sebelum 18 daripadanya disenarai sebagai tarikan dalam JWK. Beliau yang turut bertanggungjawab dalam mengenal pasti tempat unik serta mempunyai nilai sejarah tinggi itu, berkata beberapa elemen diambil kira dalam menentukan kesesuaian lokasi tarikan JWK.     13/12/2003 Cool, calm and considerate Annie Freeda Cruez HE is forgiving but not to those who keep defying his orders and directives. He is stern when the situation warrants it and this was seen many an occasion during his two-year reign as the Sultan of Selangor. Recently, the Sultan threatened to revoke the Justice of Peace appointments of those who still display the Selangor Council of Justice of the Peace emblem on their vehicles. The directive to members of the council to remove the `JP' emblem from their vehicles came about last December after police and the Road Transport Department were tipped off that some members of the public had been displaying such emblems on their vehicles and abusing the authority that comes with it. Sultan Sharafuddin had himself come across vehicles displaying the JP emblem in the car parks at the Concorde Hotel and Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur. He is also a Ruler who never hesitates to revoke the Datukship of people who had abused their positions or involved themselves in illegal and vice activities. An example was when on Nov 27 last year, he revoked the Datukship of businessmen Tan Hok Low and Robert Chan Wai Ing after they were found to have abused their positions. He had warned all State title-holders that he would not hesitate to revoke titles if they were found to have abused their positions for gain. While being stern and firm, he also has the welfare of the people at heart. It was he who initiated that all JPs in Selangor must attend an induction course preparing them to assume quasijudicial roles.
