ROYAL KLANG TOWN HERITAGE WALK Tour Details ROYAL KLANG TOWN HERITAGE WALK Tour details Meet your guide at hotel for travel to Klang by Light Railway Train (LRT) and commuter train. Klang is a royal town and former civil capital of the state of Selangor in an earlier era prior to the emergence of Kuala Lumpur and the current capital Shah Alam. Disembark at Klang Station (built in 1890), the station has undergone numerous renovations but the main building with is Western Colonial architecture still remains. From the station, we will walk across to a 76-year-old Hainanese coffee shop to enjoy a local breakfast. This coffee shop is extremely popular amongst the locals and one of the favourite breakfast spots in the city. It is an interesting sight to see Malaysians of all races and backgrounds gather here for breakfast before starting their day. Must try: ‘Roti Telur Goyang’ (soft-boiled egg on toast), ‘Nasi Lemak’ (fragrant coconut rice with sambal and condiments) and Hainanese aromatic coffee. Start your walking tour with the Royal Gallery or Galeri diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz. It is housed in a beautifully preserved colonial building designed by Arthur Benison Hubback (who also designed many of KL's famous landmarks including the railway station). This building was used as government offices for both the colonial and post-independence administrations as well as serving as a Japanese military headquarters during world War II. It was recently converted into the Royal Gallery museum to showcase the Royal Collections of the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz including a range of magnificent artefacts, memorabilia and gifts covering his reign. Included in the exhibition are replicas of Selangor's crown jewels. Next to the Royal Gallery is the former Chartered Bank building. This neoclassical building, which dates from 1874, was the first bank to be opened in Klang. During World War II the Japanese used the premise to interrogate and execute war prisoners. The building has more recently been renovated and it is now occupied by Chennai Silk, a retailer of saris, fabrics and more. Continue your Klang Walking Tour along Jalan Istana passing the Royal Klang Club until you get a good view of the imposing Istana Alam Shah (a Royal palace of the Sultan of Selangor) which sits on a 24- acre hilltop overlooking the town. From here you can retrace your steps and make your way towards “Little India’’ which is centred around Jalan Tengku Kelana. Klang town has a sizeable ethnically Indian community and the Little India district is bustling and interesting, packed with colourful shops selling saris, textiles, bangles, jewellery, food items, fragrant spices, flowers and many more. The pavement outside some of the shops is so clean and shiny you feel like you should take your shoes off before walking on it. Be sure to savor and enjoy some Malaysian snacks and sweets when the walk reaches Little India. These can be found along the narrow rows of antiquated shop houses. The nearby Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani Temple is said to be the oldest and richest Hindu temple in Klang. Its 20 metre entrance tower has been ornately decorated with 94 statues. You will pass a colonial-era Fire Station. This fine example of a Victorian fire station dates back to the 1890s. Although it has been adapted to accommodate modern firefighting appliances, it still retains many of its original features. Next we reach the 150-year-old Gedung Raja Abdullah, a historic godown or warehouse close to the banks of the Klang River. Before returning to the train station, you will pass one of Klang's famous ‘Bak Kut The’ restaurant alongside the road bridge. This establishment has been serving ‘Bak Kut The’ or literally translated as meat bone tea for over 60 years. It is a Hokkien dish usually made with pork ribs braised in a dark broth of herbs and spices and is highly sought after by Malaysian food fanatics (which is all Malaysians!). www.diethelmtravel.com Page 1 of 2 Fast facts Tour code Tour departure time 8:00 hours Tour duration (approx.) 5 hours Transfer to/from hotel No, by train included Meal included Breakfast, snacks and lunch Tour type Private Operates Daily Minimum/Maximum Minimum 1 person, maximum 10 persons per guide number of persons A comfortable pair of sneakers or sandals will help make this walk, Note guaranteed to be an eye-opener for both locals and tourists, more fun and enriching. 22/11/2001 Nation mourns (HL) KUALA LUMPUR, Wed. - The nation today began mourning the passing of the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj. The King, 75, passed away at 11.57 this morning after a prolonged illness. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the King's death in an address to the nation over radio and television at 1.50pm. "With great sadness and regret, I announce that the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah al-Haj passed away at 11.57 this morning at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre," he said. The King died two months after he was first admitted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for a heart surgery to implant a pacemaker. Dr Mahathir declared a seven-day period of national mourning and urged all relevant parties to fly their flags at half-mast. In Selangor, the State Government declared 40 days of mourning. The Prime Minister also announced the cancellation of all official government functions for today and tomorrow as a mark of respect. Dr Mahathir said the new Sultan of Selangor would be proclaimed tomorrow. Omar Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA 40450 Shah Alam, Malaysia Nazrul Hisham bin Osman City Council of Shah Alam 40000 Malaysia Abstract Malaysia has been undergoing rather rapid urbanisation since the beginning of the 20th century. The level of urbanisation increased from 55.1 per cent in 1995 to 61.8 per cent in 2000, 63 per cent in 2005 and is expected to increase to 63.8 by 2010. The total population of Malaysia was 26.75 million in 2005 and is expected to increase to 28.96 million by 2010. This increase leads to more solid waste. The Klang Valley is the most urbanised region with 45 per cent of Malaysian urban centres being located here. The city of Shah Alam is one of the major centres in the Klang Valley and is a developing new town. Solid waste management is a major problem in the city of Shah Alam and new strategies are needed which aim at involving all citizens and achieving a sustainable environment. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kyoto University Research Information Repository "Identity Monarchy": Interrogating Heritage for a Divided Title Malaysia Author(s) Milner, Anthony Citation Southeast Asian Studies (2012), 1(2): 191-212 Issue Date 2012-08 URL http://hdl.handle.net/2433/167299 Right Type Journal Article Textversion publisher Kyoto University “Identity Monarchy”: Interrogating Heritage for a Divided Malaysia Anthony Milner* Malaysia, it has been observed, is currently experiencing a “revival” of “Malay kingship” with the growing importance of “proactive and participating constitutional rulers.” In fact, modern Malaysia has since independence been characterized by monarchy—by a multiplicity of Rulers and elaborate royal ceremony and hierarchy —as well as by its “plural society.” But the modern monarchs—though they have never become quite “constitutional Rulers”—cannot be seen as merely “traditional,” because the institution of monarchy was transformed in a fundamental way during the British colonial period. Monarchy continues to be an underexamined feature of the Malaysian polity, and when it is discussed there is a tendency to focus on issues of power and to neglect its sociocultural role. One pre-colonial dimension of monarchy that continues to be significant today—though in a manner less psychologically profound than before—is its identity-giving role. The principal concern of this article is to deter- mine—through a process of hermeneutic retrieval—if this role is merely relevant to the Malay community, or does it possess more inclusive possibilities? Are the Rulers of Malaysia essentially “Malay Rulers” or has the institution a nation-building potential that has so far not been fully utilized? The question is important for a country that many see as becoming increasingly divided.

  • The Satisfaction of Residents on Community Facilities in Shah Alam, Malaysia
Asian Social Science November, 2008 The Satisfaction of Residents on Community Facilities in Shah Alam, Malaysia Hafazah Abdul Karim (Ph.D) Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying University Teknologi MARA, 40450 Shah Alam, Malaysia E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Residents in urban areas are well provided with available facilities to choose from; may that be for education, grocery shopping, eating, recreation, praying, medical services and others. Residents can choose any of these facilities for their needs and wants. There is however some variance in the choice of facilities for different types of housing areas. The availability of facilities has to some degree affect the satisfaction of residents towards their housing environment. This paper revolves around the findings of a research relating to the level of satisfaction of residents in urban low cost flats towards the availability and accessibility of facilities in two cities. There are a total of eight locations of low cost flats; five of which are located in the city of Shah Alam and three locations in the city of Klang. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to approach this study. Survey data were analysed through the SPSS program and also by the Grounded Theory Analysis. The findings show that the factors of availability and accessibility of facilities play an important role in the level of satisfaction of these residents. Findings also show that that the respondents in Shah Alam are more satisfied compared to those in Klang towards the community facilities domain in their housing area. In general, it can be concluded that residents living in Shah Alam has a higher level of well-being than in Klang where community facilities domain is concerned.
