ROYAL KLANG TOWN HERITAGE WALK Tour details Meet your guide at hotel for travel to Klang by Light Railway Train (LRT) and commuter train. Klang is a royal town and former civil capital of the state of Selangor in an earlier era prior to the emergence of Kuala Lumpur and the current capital Shah Alam. Disembark at Klang Station (built in 1890), the station has undergone numerous renovations but the main building with is Western Colonial architecture still remains. From the station, we will walk across to a 76-year-old Hainanese coffee shop to enjoy a local breakfast. This coffee shop is extremely popular amongst the locals and one of the favourite breakfast spots in the city. It is an interesting sight to see Malaysians of all races and backgrounds gather here for breakfast before starting their day. Must try: ‘Roti Telur Goyang’ (soft-boiled egg on toast), ‘Nasi Lemak’ (fragrant coconut rice with sambal and condiments) and Hainanese aromatic coffee. Start your walking tour with the Royal Gallery or Galeri diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz. It is housed in a beautifully preserved colonial building designed by Arthur Benison Hubback (who also designed many of KL's famous landmarks including the railway station). This building was used as government offices for both the colonial and post-independence administrations as well as serving as a Japanese military headquarters during world War II. It was recently converted into the Royal Gallery museum to showcase the Royal Collections of the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz including a range of magnificent artefacts, memorabilia and gifts covering his reign. Included in the exhibition are replicas of Selangor's crown jewels. Next to the Royal Gallery is the former Chartered Bank building. This neoclassical building, which dates from 1874, was the first bank to be opened in Klang. During World War II the Japanese used the premise to interrogate and execute war prisoners. The building has more recently been renovated and it is now occupied by Chennai Silk, a retailer of saris, fabrics and more. Continue your Klang Walking Tour along Jalan Istana passing the Royal Klang Club until you get a good view of the imposing Istana Alam Shah (a Royal palace of the Sultan of Selangor) which sits on a 24- acre hilltop overlooking the town. From here you can retrace your steps and make your way towards “Little India’’ which is centred around Jalan Tengku Kelana. Klang town has a sizeable ethnically Indian community and the Little India district is bustling and interesting, packed with colourful shops selling saris, textiles, bangles, jewellery, food items, fragrant spices, flowers and many more. The pavement outside some of the shops is so clean and shiny you feel like you should take your shoes off before walking on it. Be sure to savor and enjoy some Malaysian snacks and sweets when the walk reaches Little India. These can be found along the narrow rows of antiquated shop houses. The nearby Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani Temple is said to be the oldest and richest Hindu temple in Klang. Its 20 metre entrance tower has been ornately decorated with 94 statues. You will pass a colonial-era Fire Station. This fine example of a Victorian fire station dates back to the 1890s. Although it has been adapted to accommodate modern firefighting appliances, it still retains many of its original features. Next we reach the 150-year-old Gedung Raja Abdullah, a historic godown or warehouse close to the banks of the Klang River. Before returning to the train station, you will pass one of Klang's famous ‘Bak Kut The’ restaurant alongside the road bridge. This establishment has been serving ‘Bak Kut The’ or literally translated as meat bone tea for over 60 years. It is a Hokkien dish usually made with pork ribs braised in a dark broth of herbs and spices and is highly sought after by Malaysian food fanatics (which is all Malaysians!). www.diethelmtravel.com Page 1 of 2 Fast facts Tour code Tour departure time 8:00 hours Tour duration (approx.) 5 hours Transfer to/from hotel No, by train included Meal included Breakfast, snacks and lunch Tour type Private Operates Daily Minimum/Maximum Minimum 1 person, maximum 10 persons per guide number of persons A comfortable pair of sneakers or sandals will help make this walk, Note guaranteed to be an eye-opener for both locals and tourists, more fun and enriching.
