Waste Management and the Environment IV 605 Waste management in the city of Shah Alam, Malaysia D. B. Omar Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA 40450 Shah Alam, Malaysia Nazrul Hisham bin Osman City Council of Shah Alam 40000 Malaysia Abstract Malaysia has been undergoing rather rapid urbanisation since the beginning of the 20th century. The level of urbanisation increased from 55.1 per cent in 1995 to 61.8 per cent in 2000, 63 per cent in 2005 and is expected to increase to 63.8 by 2010. The total population of Malaysia was 26.75 million in 2005 and is expected to increase to 28.96 million by 2010. This increase leads to more solid waste. The Klang Valley is the most urbanised region with 45 per cent of Malaysian urban centres being located here. The city of Shah Alam is one of the major centres in the Klang Valley and is a developing new town. Solid waste management is a major problem in the city of Shah Alam and new strategies are needed which aim at involving all citizens and achieving a sustainable environment. The City Council of Shah Alam requires waste compositional information at the local level to plan, implement and monitor waste management schemes that will enable them to meet their contribution to the national targets. This paper will discuss the current situation in the city of Shah Alam and the National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management. Keywords: urbanisation, population, solid waste management, citizens, sustainable environment. 1 Introduction Malaysia is now at the mid-point of its journey towards becoming a developed country by 2020.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kyoto University Research Information Repository "Identity Monarchy": Interrogating Heritage for a Divided Title Malaysia Author(s) Milner, Anthony Citation Southeast Asian Studies (2012), 1(2): 191-212 Issue Date 2012-08 URL http://hdl.handle.net/2433/167299 Right Type Journal Article Textversion publisher Kyoto University “Identity Monarchy”: Interrogating Heritage for a Divided Malaysia Anthony Milner* Malaysia, it has been observed, is currently experiencing a “revival” of “Malay kingship” with the growing importance of “proactive and participating constitutional rulers.” In fact, modern Malaysia has since independence been characterized by monarchy—by a multiplicity of Rulers and elaborate royal ceremony and hierarchy —as well as by its “plural society.” But the modern monarchs—though they have never become quite “constitutional Rulers”—cannot be seen as merely “traditional,” because the institution of monarchy was transformed in a fundamental way during the British colonial period. Monarchy continues to be an underexamined feature of the Malaysian polity, and when it is discussed there is a tendency to focus on issues of power and to neglect its sociocultural role. One pre-colonial dimension of monarchy that continues to be significant today—though in a manner less psychologically profound than before—is its identity-giving role. The principal concern of this article is to deter- mine—through a process of hermeneutic retrieval—if this role is merely relevant to the Malay community, or does it possess more inclusive possibilities? Are the Rulers of Malaysia essentially “Malay Rulers” or has the institution a nation-building potential that has so far not been fully utilized? The question is important for a country that many see as becoming increasingly divided.

  • The Satisfaction of Residents on Community Facilities in Shah Alam, Malaysia
Asian Social Science November, 2008 The Satisfaction of Residents on Community Facilities in Shah Alam, Malaysia Hafazah Abdul Karim (Ph.D) Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying University Teknologi MARA, 40450 Shah Alam, Malaysia E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Residents in urban areas are well provided with available facilities to choose from; may that be for education, grocery shopping, eating, recreation, praying, medical services and others. Residents can choose any of these facilities for their needs and wants. There is however some variance in the choice of facilities for different types of housing areas. The availability of facilities has to some degree affect the satisfaction of residents towards their housing environment. This paper revolves around the findings of a research relating to the level of satisfaction of residents in urban low cost flats towards the availability and accessibility of facilities in two cities. There are a total of eight locations of low cost flats; five of which are located in the city of Shah Alam and three locations in the city of Klang. Combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to approach this study. Survey data were analysed through the SPSS program and also by the Grounded Theory Analysis. The findings show that the factors of availability and accessibility of facilities play an important role in the level of satisfaction of these residents. Findings also show that that the respondents in Shah Alam are more satisfied compared to those in Klang towards the community facilities domain in their housing area. In general, it can be concluded that residents living in Shah Alam has a higher level of well-being than in Klang where community facilities domain is concerned.
