February, being the shortest month of the year, did not limit the continuing contributions of our club in its service to the community and in the pace of activities. First was the visit of the District Governor (DG). It was our first ever virtual DG visit efficiently managed on Zoom. Not being able to physically meet didn’t dampen the warm customary welcome we normally have for our DG, as we secretly arranged gifts, flowers and food delivered to his house, one after another. I am also glad the DG got to spend time with our Interactors and Rotaractors. In particular, I must say that the presentation from our Interactors of Catholic High School was flawless! Directors seamlessly executed power point presentations as if they were pre- recorded! Our Interactors have always been We were overjoyed by the professional our pride and they have never ceased to amaze greetings we received from our sister clubs in me. There is no compulsion; yet they always go return. I reiterate our stance that Covid has changed many things in our lives, but our sister the extra mile. It is clear to me that we have unexpectedly gained so much more than we have given. Just like any project, with good management, we can reduce abuse and perform minor miracles. For this I take off my hat to our dedicated Covid team. BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

In Form 5, I was elected Community Service Director of the club. VP Nicholas Chan was IU Director then. We had a few legacy projects under community service which included teaching kids in St Paul's Church Petaling Jaya. Other projects included road curb painting, glass shutters repair and replacement for classrooms and raising funds through car washing.

We also organized old folks home visits and sharing some activities with them, such as performing some cultural events which included singing and dancing to cheer the elderly. Essential items such as rice, oats, crackers, adult diapers, mugs and old clothes were raised and donated to these old folks’ homes. Interactors who participated in such events enjoyed the various activities and gained experience on how to provide proper care for geriatric patients.

I also enjoyed getting to know more friends from different schools through International Understanding Day (IU Day) events held by Interact clubs sponsored by the Rotary Club of Born on 6th November 1978 in , I Petaling Jaya (RCPJ), such as SMK Abdul attended kindergarten at the Church of the Holy Samad PJ, SMK La Salle PJ, SMK Assunta PJ, Rosary Kuala Lumpur, primary school at SJK(C) SMK (P) Taman Petaling and SMK (P) Sri Aman Chen Moh Petaling Jaya, secondary school at SMJL PJ. Katholic in Petaling Jaya and removed class in Form 6.

I joined the Catholic High School Interact Club in Form 2. When walking back to class after morning assembly, I saw a booth of ICCHS inviting new members to join. So, without understanding what Interact Club was, I signed up with a few classmates and that’s how I became an Interactor. It was only in Form 3 that I started to be actively involved in ICCHS activities. I remember my first activity was fund raising for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Bangsar Shopping Centre. We raised the most funds for that day! WHY DID I JOIN ROTARY ? ----BY ROTARIAN FAN KA CHUN

During my Interactor life, I also learned a lot from After working for three years, I resigned and our Teacher Advisors and Rotarian Advisors, PP partnered with an UMS friend to start our own Jack Lim & PP Michael Toh. Industrial Automation & System Integration company, PROSYS Automation, located in After CHS, I studied Electrical and Electronics Sunwaymas Commercial Centre PJ. We are Engineering at University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS) mainly involved in Multiphase Flow Metering and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering with System & Custody Flow Metering System in the Honours degree in year 2002. I began my career as Oil & Gas industry. I am also fortunate to partner an industrial trainee and later as a system engineer with my other UMS friends to form few in an Industrial Automation company in Dataran engineering companies (CMEIS) involved in Prima PJ. My very first automation project was to Mechanical Valve business (Oil & Gas), Water & automate a milk & juice production line in Dutch Wastewater Treatment plant system, Lady Milk Industries, Section 13 PJ. Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation, Sampling System, Chemical Dosing System & Seawater Electro chlorination Plant System (Power Industries).

One day, my CHS high schoolmate cum ICCHS member, VP Nicholas Chan whatsapped me that he is now a Rotarian of RCPJ and currently with our ICCHS Rtn Advisor PP Jack Lim. VP Nicholas invited me to a RCPJ lunch meeting to meet PP Jack Lim and get to know more about RCPJ. I was very excited to meet PP Jack Lim, had a great chat with him and had the chance to get to know more about RCPJ, my sponsor club during my Interactor life in ICCHS. From then onwards I joined a few more lunch meetings as a guest of VP Nicholas. He briefed me on what RCPJ stands for, and the work of the club. Eventually, I decided to join RCPJ because I wanted to contribute more to society and to get to know more friends as I was always busy with my company business. I was inducted as a Rotarian on 9 Oct 2018 and my wife, then pregnant, witnessed the occasion; a day after I became a Rotarian of RCPJ, my first boy was auspiciously born on 10 Oct 2018! I certainly hope that my journey with RCPJ will be meaningful and am certainly glad that I now have a bunch of good friends in RCPJ. ROTARY HISTORY

Why the Rotary year begins 1 July

Ever wonder why 1 July is the beginning of the Rotary year? Initially, our conventions played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year.

Rotary’s first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August. Attendees at Rotary’s first convention in Chicago in 1910. Rotary continued to hold its annual conventions in July or August until 1917. Delegates to the 1916 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, approved a resolution to hold future conventions in June, mainly because of the heat in cities where most of them occurred. The next one was held 17-21 June in Atlanta, Georgia. CONTACT US RCPJ is part of an international movement founded by Paul P. Harris in 1905. The Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya

RCPJ was chartered on 6 January 1961 with over 40 members at present. Rotary is an international movement founded on international friendship and service to the community in which it is located. Perhaps the most prominent of its project has been and still is, Polio Plus, the eradication of polio from the face of the earth. It is a non-political, non-religious, non-racial, non- sectarian, non-governmental voluntary organization comprising men and women of many varied professions.

Over the last years, RCPJ was responsible for providing Petaling Jaya's urban community with its first public library, for equipping children’s’ playground, and starting a kindergarten, while at the national level, it succeeded in launching the National Kidney Foundation, the precursor of the country's first centre for urology and neurology, to mention some of its more spectacular achievements.

By 1990, RCPJ expanded its service activities to establish regular community support in the form of schools nutrition, vocation guidance, youth development through Rotaract and Interact Clubs and bus shelters and pedestrian bridges.

Besides that, RCPJ has also addressed contemporary local issues for the aged, the handicapped, the poor, the environment, health and International relationships. More recently, RCPJ carried out the Golden Child Project for the terminally ill, Ten-Pin Bowling for the physically and mentally challenged children, children’s cheer project for the less privileged, vaccination for hawkers in SS2, Petaling Jaya, organising SuperCamps to reach out to the youths and conducting the Lighthouse Project to train teachers to teach English. In 2005, the Club put into action the Super Mums project to empower single mothers to start and sustain their home based business and to be financially independent.
