Shopping Announce New Album, All Or Nothing, out February 7Th December 5, 2019 For Immediate Release Shopping Announce New Album, All Or Nothing, Out February 7th On FatCat Records, And North American Tour Watch Video For Lead Single, “Initiative” (Photo Credit: Matt Draper) Shopping announce All Or Nothing, their new album out February 7th on FatCat Records, and present the video for lead single, “Initiative.” Following 2018’s The Official Body, the songs that make up All or Nothing are the band’s boldest yet; confident, elastic, streamlined grooves that crackle with energy and intention. The trio’s vision – deeply queer; political by default – place them in a radical lineage of dance, a continuum connecting disco and post-punk to Chicago house and EDM. Storming lead single “Initiative” was written in a Seattle basement. Like the album as a whole, the track thrums with purpose, marking a confident new phase for the band. Referencing governments who shirk responsibilities but place the blame on individuals, the song has a frustrated groove that’s propelling, motivated by necessity to keep going against the grain. The accompanying video, directed by Jack Barraclough, is brightly-stylized, and stars the band themselves. Watch Video For “Initiative” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Owoq6vVkUs Though the band members now live countries away from each other - guitarist Rachel Aggs (Trash Kit, Sacred Paws) and drummer Andrew Milk (Current Affairs) in Glasgow and Billy Easter (Wet Dog) in Los Angeles - the trio returned to London for an intense, 10-day period. For All Or Nothing, they teamed up with US-based producer Davey Warsop to record, shifting their stripped-down ethos to one that took a leap into pop production. Talking Heads, YYYs, Bronski Beat and LCD Soundsystem are among the artists to feature on the production inspo playlist the band created for Nick Sylvester, who mixed the record, in Los Angeles. Along with cleaner, new production values, All Or Nothing sees Shopping experiment further with the sonic additions that coloured The Official Body. Jubilantly ‘80s synths and electronic percussion add new textures to their signature minimalist dynamic. Four albums in, Shopping are as committed and focused as ever, regardless of any distance. “We found ourselves singing about being true to yourself, in an often binary and belligerent digital age, and reclaiming agency when it feels like our personal freedom and privacy is constantly eroding.” In an era dominated by spin and surveillance, All Or Nothing invites us to remember what really moves us, in dance and in life. All Or Nothing Tracklist: 1. All Or Nothing 2. Initiative 3. Follow Me 4. No Apologies 5. For Your Pleasure 6. About You 7. Lies 8. Expert Advice 9. Body Clock 10. It makes for songs that are as mesmerizing as they are exhilaraEng.” — Pitchfork Shopping are pleased to present the video for “Suddenly Gone,” before kicking off their North American tour tomorrow night in Boston at Great Sco! The tour takes them all across the US and Canada, including stops at both SaVannah StopoVer and SXSW, in support of The Official Body, out last month on FatCat Records. A full list of dates is below. The “Suddenly Gone” video, directed by LA-based director and animator Lessa Millet, “talks about labour and resources,” says band member Rachel Aggs. “It’s about feeling used and undervalued in a relaEonship or, more generally, as a queer and/or a person of colour making music or art in the UK and how that can feel very draining.” She adds, “you can feel overlooked for years and then suddenly tokenized when your idenEty becomes buzz- worthy or fashionable.

  • Interview: Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus,Album of the Week
Interview: Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus (Photo: Jorge Chantre) Ever since their start in Glen Rock, NJ, in 2005, Titus Andronicus have been lauded for their energetic live performances. Frontman and guitarist Patrick Stickles sings intensely from the heart in unapologetic fashion. It’s musical honesty with a punk rock foundation that’s absolutely incredible. The band has their fifth studio album currently out, A Productive Cough, which was released Mar 2 through Merge Records. Stickles and pianist Alex Molini will be rolling through AS220 on Empire Street in Providence on March 9 to perform stripped down versions of Titus Andronicus’ songs with Rick Maguire from Boston indie rock act Pile kicking things off. I had a talk with Stickles recently about the influence of ‘90s hip hop on his lyrics, heart-on-the-sleeve ballads, hope and optimism for the state of DIY venues and not lamenting about the festival season. Rob Duguay (Motif): Your lyrics have a poetic tone while encompassing a lot of empathetic emotion. Whom do you consider your main influences when it comes to writing lyrics? Do you lean more towards musicians or do you lean more towards poets? Patrick Stickles: Some of the best musicians are also some of the best poets, I gotta say. My lyrical inspirations mostly come from the rap music world. Not even necessarily their subject matter, but their attention to detail and the high standard of excellence that the best ones seem to adhere to. It’s a very lyrically driven form, or it certainly was at one point but less so today.

2007/2017 | POST-PUNK Post-punk was never a sound. Or at least, it was way too many sounds to be boiled down to a single aesthetic. What tied those many sounds together was an adventurous, seeking spirit. It was music often made by young people, but it wasn’t youth music per se, striving for themes and sounds that were less ephemeral than most popular music. I’ve always thought of it as a flourishing that lasted from about 1978-1982 before passing the torch to other music (though a lot of post-punk and new wave musicians continued to do fantastic work). And that was that--the music continues to surprise and excite us, but it was finite. That understanding was recently massively shaken up, when I met Dave Cantrell, whose Songs From Under the Floorboard radio show on XRAY.fm and Out From The Shadows music festival in Portland, Oregon unabashedly use the term “post-punk” to refer to an active musical culture, with no qualifiers like “neo” or “revival” necessary. I was skeptical, sound unheard, expecting it to be a shallow exercise in aping the sounds of post- punk without engaging the animating spirit at its core. But Dave is an “original” post-punk, who was “there” in London, late 70s/early 80s, meeting the bands, experiencing post-punk first-hand as I never could (I was born in 1980) as a living culture. So if he felt so sure that this current-day “post-punk” needed no qualifiers, I had to give it a shot.
