Back to the Future...

A huge factor in the sustained success of the Club’s Mini and Youth section has been the leadership provided by M&Y Chairperson John Creighton who couldn’t be more qualified for the role. John started playing mini rugby at Cambridge as a five year old in 1976 and has played at scrum- half for every team and age group at Cambridge with the exception of the First XV, not that he is bitter about that, as he chose instead to play his very senior rugby for then high flying Lewes RFC when University took him away from Cambridge to the south coast. “It was the very early days of mini rugby when my parents took me along. We were coached by John Ashley who founded the minis and is still supporting the first fifteen at home games having watched many of his former charges play at the highest levels for the Blood and Sand”. John put his boots back on again nearly thirty years later when his oldest son Fin started mini rugby in 2005 also as a five year old. Since then he’s coached every single age group at the Club. “I at scrum-half. “We are incredibly proud that Sam think it is terribly important to be credible as M&Y Herd, Alex Coles, Kayde Sylvester as well as Fin are Chairman that you have actually had first-hand all doing so well in the Saints Academy. Hopefully experience at all the various age groups, which we have instilled the basics at Cambridge that can be very different. No one can say you don’t will enable them all to make the most of this know what you are talking about.” And Creighton’s opportunity.” With two other sons working their coaching and leadership has certainly been way through the Cambridge age-teams, it looks like productive in developing the next crop of senior Cambridge are fortunate to have access to John’s level players with an incredible four Cambridge experience and passion for a few years yet. players currently in ‘ Under 18s squad including Fin, following father’s footsteps Shaun Grady
