01279 757 333 proco.com PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

For the penultimate time this season I would like to welcome you all here to Silver Leys & in particular the Players, Officials and supporters of Redingensians Rams RFC. I would also like to extend a special welcome to everyone associated with our Man of the Match sponsors Belcom.

With just the three games left to play in the campaign we remain, despite last Saturday’s setback, seven points clear at the top of National League Two South and need ‘just’ nine points from those remaining games to be crowned champions.

Huge thanks to the legions of Stortford fans who travelled to Chinnor last week to support our guys. Whilst the result wasn’t quite what we’d hoped for, the losing bonus point we brought home, along with restricting one of our closest competitors to just the four point win means that our destiny is still very much in our own hands and we can hardly ask for much more at this late stage.

A win today would of course be very welcome but, and I seem to say this every week, we should not underestimate our opposition. The fixture against the Rams at the beginning of December was in my opinion one of the most seminal in this memorable season. On that day as the game entered its final play we were trailing 20 points to 24 but our guys refused to give up and a little bit of magic from wing Ryan Hutler released Nick Hankin for a try that not only secured victory but an all-important try bonus point. Redingensians were that close to beating us and they will obviously take a lot of confidence knowing that into today’s encounter. They currently lie 7th in the table and have of late recorded some impressive victories most notably at Cinderford & Canterbury so there is certainly no room for complacency from our guys.

Today is of course also Ladies day at Stortford. This is an occasion for us to show that our rugby club is an inclusive location where everybody can enjoy spending their Saturday afternoon. If previous years are anything to go by I’m sure all our Lady guests will have a great day and hopefully raise lots of money for the events chosen charity - Edie’s Butterfly Appeal

I haven’t said much in recent weeks about the other teams in the club, so let’s change that now. Our Mitres & Chindits are both at home today in Cup Semi-finals against Ampthill & Upper Clapton respectively. Whilst our Abbots are away at Hitchin in a Plate semi. Go well guys. Well done to our Ladies team who won last Sunday 55-42 against a combined Harlow & Chelmsford team. Keep up the great work Girls!

& finally a quick mention for almost our entire Youth section as once again we have representatives in all the County Cup finals from U14 to U17 as well as finalists in the U15 Shield competition. Congratulations to all our players, coaches, volunteers & parents on a fantastic achievement. Finally – a familiar plea for everyone to make some noise!! The travelling supporters last week were immense. Let’s replicate it here today. It really does make a difference and we know our players really appreciate it. So Be Loud - Be Enthusiastic -Be Passionate but please remember to be respectful to our guests from Reading and of course the Match officials. Enjoy the game. COYB!

The club was founded as Old Redingensians in 1924 by former pupils of Reading School. Over the years the Club has played at grounds in Caversham at Emmer Green and ultimatelyto the present Old Bath Road, site. With a lack of former pupils joining from Reading School, it became difficult to field three XVs and the club became open in 1968. The following year “Old” was dropped from the title.

In 1987 the English League system was introduced and initially helped Redingensians. They won promotion from the Southern Counties League in their inaugural season but the spell in South West 2 was short-lived.

A slide down the leagues ensued, before a mini-revival with promotion largely brought about thanks to players coming through from a flourishing junior section. A young side gained promotion in successive seasons (2005-6) and (2006-7). This meant the club reached South West 1 (now National 3 South West) - the highest level in their history.

The nickname “Rams” was adopted to reflect the club’s connection with Reading, the animal featuring in the town’s coat of arms. New ground was also broken with the formation of the Rams Academy. – a joint venture of the club and the University of Reading to recruit and develop promising young players from the local community.

Redingensians run five adult teams and the youth section is among the biggest in the area with approximately 300 boys and girls playing on Sundays. The club fields sides at every age group from Under 6 to Under 19s.

The Community Redingensians is a Model of Good Practice for its work in the community. For many years having been Wokingham Council’s partner rugby club, and now work closely with The Bulmershe School as the Specialist Sports College for Wokingham. Examples of our community projects are;

Hosting tag rugby tournaments, running Outreach Sessions at local Secondary Schools to allow children to “Come and Try” rugby, Coaching , maintaining Club-School links with a new initiative and the number of partner schools is growing quickly. Providing a Redingensians Ambassador to all Primary Schools, inviting PE Coordinators from local Primary Schools to attend Mini Rugby events. Participating in the recent School Sports Week. Coaching and Managing the Wokingham tag rugby team.

WestburyGR_BishopsStortford_A5_160725.indd 1 25/07/2016 12:14 CHANGES IN THE LAWS OF

When was the last time that you put on Club colours and boots and showed the wild life what a fine pair of matchsticks you had. Apart from the players fitness and the physicality what else has changed and what still needs changing ? Can you recall what number you had on your back or maybe it was a letter ? If you played in a No. 8 shirt in the 1950’s you were the loosehead prop not the playboy attention seeker in the back row, and No. 9 you would be playing hooker. A 1950’s booklet called “Know the Game” in which it stated that there are no hard and fast rules governing the names of the positions or the numbers worn but it lists the custom in Britain as being 1 for the fullback, to 15 for the lock. There were also some superstitious Clubs so no Number 13’s. Replacements did not come into the equation until 1968. To further confuse the issue touring sides sometimes wore “squad” numbers

Replacements were first used in Internationals in 1967 for blood injuries. Front row replacements were introduced to stop the practice of sides claiming uncontested scrums but now tend to be used more for tactical reasons. Rugby League uses the reverse numbering system to Union and did reduce players to 13.

In the previous programme we had an article on GPS systems but we already have Fourth Officials,Video Replay Officials, TMO-(TV Match Officials) with large screens in the stadia and several thousand unofficial referees. Surprisingly the first use of “video replays” in games with TV coverage goes back to 2001. This has led to the developing role of the 4th Official with the advantage of being able to view incidents from a number of different angles and looking back on a situation being microphone linked to the referee can alert them to issues. This has become more evident this season with the Video Replay Official advising of infringements and serious offences as well as confirming or changing decisions. On the topic of Refereeing decisions Yellow Cards first came into use in 1997 for “repeated and cynical offences” initially just as a warning so whilst Ben Clarke is recorded as the first person to “be shown a Yellow Card” Sin Binning did not come into effect until the World Cup of 1999 The materials used so that balls not only keep their shape but make handling easier, kicking tees rather than build up sand castles. Even the turf is no longer real turf. Since 2012 Saracens pitch is astro turf, made, I believe from oil waste.

Whilst pitches have the same overall dimensions, line markings have slightly changed with 5 metre marking and 22 metre rather than 25 yards added to try line, halfway, dead ball, 10 metre and touchlines. Whilst Rugby Post dimensions have remained the same they, together with Flag Posts now have padding, sought after for carrying advertising messages

The variety of ways in which a side can gain points for, remains at tries, conversions, penalties and drop goals but what has changed are the number of points allocated for each. This is still an area argued as to the weight difference between a try and a penality not reflecting the degree of difficulty.

The League system that we are now familiar with started back in 1987 Bonus Points were added for 2004/05 season League matches largely replaced the so called “Friendlies” although Professionalism was not officially recognised until 1995 at which time the Snakes and Ladders game of promotion, relegation and even bankruptcy started to undermine the foundations. With league restructuring at one side of a see- saw and wage capping on the other end the Clubs have been trying to find the balancing point but in the process needing to stay solvent. The RFU Council meeting this week announced the thresholds which were set at £125,000 for National League 2, increasing to £250,000 for National League 1. This was an increase of £25,000 on the initial proposals outlinrd in the programme against on 29 October.

With Premiership Clubs also competing in Europe plus other cup competitions and with playing in Autumn and RBS 6 Nations the demands are evident. Players are expected to play a maxmimum of 32 games in a season League games 22 + maximum of two play-off 24 Europe 6 + maximum of three (quarter, semi-final and final) 9 Anglo-Welsh 4 + maximum of two (Semi and final) 6 International players 5 Six Nations, 4 Autumn games and say three 12 Possible maximum 51 games

It is believed that no internationals from the top clubs will play in Anglo-Welsh competition So maximum no of games could be 45 for international players but the Six Nations and Autumn Internationals clash with some league fixtures so top players maximum is likely to be 37 games Clubs have to take in substitution policy for top players and the clubs must allow somehow for actual playing time.

Clubs not making the later stages of competitions and with limited number of internationals would only have a minimum of 28 games (league + Europe) to cover with their best players. It also explains why clubs sign top overseas players who are no longer current internationals.

Look at two Premiership club squads : Gloucester listed 43 players in their squad Newcastle listed 29 senior squad and 14 Academy players Clubs will need around 43 players to keep within the 32 game limits.

Whatever happened to: half-time orange slices?

Another item from a series of ramblings that appear to have gone missing from the game of rugby No, it’s not the fact that you can lift in the lineout, or that you have to stay bound in the scrum, No, it’s got nothing to do with the laws of the game - the biggest change is, in fact - and without a shadow of a doubt - the demise of the half-time orange slice.

Back in the good old days, come half-time it just didn’t matter how hot it was, how hard you’d worked, how thirsty you were - no, the best you could hope for (and this quite often only applied to 1st XV matches - the other teams being simply not worthy enough) was a fairly unappetising slice of orange.

Forget isotonic sports drinks, forget even the the restorative effects of a sip of H2O - you were expected to revive flagging limbs and sagging spirits simply by sucking on a withered piece of citrus fruit for about 5 seconds. Furthermore, more often than not some bright spark had miscalculated and had divided the said fruit into 14 pieces, meaning that someone (guess who?) had to miss out. Believe me, as unappetising as it sounds, being the one player not to get to suck on a piece of orange was desperately demoralising. As I often have cause to mutter - players today don’t know they’re born.

Or Plunge Baths ? Disappeared with the crazy gang known as Health & Safety. Large, deep but hot pools of muddy waters where appendiges were compared and the singing was challenged by one side against the other. Ultimately counting the points became less important than the decible levels achieved or number of verses known. Next time we can finish on Elv’s (not to be confused with Elves) and proposals for the future. thanks to Richard Evans for research background. &

I would like to offer a warm welcome to today’s opponents, Redingensians, in what is likely to be a very tight game with, potentially, a lot at stake. We just managed to get an away win by one point with the last kick of the game back in December in a game where the momentum swung back and forth all afternoon. Redingensians have lost only one of their last eight games, against OEs, and picked up away wins at Cinderford and Canterbury. So, we should be set for another titanic struggle this afternoon!

The review by the RFU of the payment to players will have drawn to a close with a final set of principles due to be approved by the RFU Council at its meeting yesterday. At the heart of these principles are financial thresholds for player benefits, which have increased from those levels outlined in the original set of proposals that formed the basis of the initial consultation amongst clubs. The thresholds are set at £125,000 for National League 2, increasing to £250,000 for National League 1. Needless to say, we fall well within the threshold for National 2, which reflects our policy of recognising the efforts and commitment of our players but at a level that is both sensible and sustainable, and still allows us to be competitive in our league. There is no doubt in my mind that if these principles are not adopted and enforced, the longer term sustainability of the game is under serious threat.

Our attitude and approach to this is underpinned by our policy of remaining true to our overriding objective of remaining a community club and all that goes with it. This is reflected not only in the amount of activity we have both on the field of play, with thriving men’s and women’s sections, and Mini and Youth sections that have no further capacity, but also within the clubhouse where we are now also at full capacity, with regular bookings by a range of local community organisations that includes yoga, pilates, weightwatchers, a playgroup and now a choir!

All of this is only made by possible by the efforts of an army of volunteers that has been brought sharply into focus this week as we plan for our annual Volunteers’ evening, which will take place on the 27th April. We have in excess of 350 people who give their time on a regular basis, in a range of capacities and without whom we would not function as a Club.

So, I hope that you enjoy your afternoon with us today and see a great game of rugby. While you do, spare a moment’s thought for those people who have made it all happen!

Yours in rugby

WILL ROBERTS TO PROVE THAT PROPS ALSO HAVE THE FOOTWORK

NICK HANKIN EVADES THE DEFENSE TO SCORE STORTFORD’S SECOND TRY Bishop’s Stortford 32 Redruth 7 Possibly the best team performance of the season sees Stortford score a 5 try victory over a powerful and committed Redruth side. The powerful Redruth pack started the game strongly and an injury to Stortford’s flyhalf and captain, Tom Coleman after only 6 minutes did nothing at all to settle the home team. Tom’s brother, Sam came off the bench to scrumhalf, allowing Tom Banks to move to his very occasional position at flyhalf. Inevitably, it took a while for the Stortford team to adjust to these changes and the physically strong Redruth side needed no second invitation to get onto the front foot. They dominated possession and territory for most of the half - particularly through their forwards, but fantastic Stortford defence re- peatedly held them out, as drive after drive was repelled, helped by some crucial turnovers at lineouts, in the loose and even at set scrums. The resultant undermining of the visitors’ forward-orientated game proved crucial to the outcome of the game, as Redruth’s efforts were repeatedly frustrated. The hammer blows came, though, as Storftord managed to produce three scores from their very rare incursions into the opposition half. The first came from a Tom Banks penalty, after an initial award at a breakdown to Redruth was reversed some 40ards out. Redruth flew straight back onto the attack from the restart, but a great break from the back of a scrum in Stortford’s 22 by Steve Ball took play well into the Redruth half.where Sam Winter took the ball on and stretched the visitors’ defence suf- ficiently to give Matt Simmonds the yard of space down the outside that he needed to sprint round for a try, which Banks comfortably converted. Once again, the home side had to deal with a concert- ed Redruth assault and two more 5 metre lineouts were repelled and a penalty eventually won. Bank- sy made a lot of territory from the touch kick and his forwards used the platform to drive repeatedly at the visitors’ line. Two penalties were forced in the red zone and the second produced a yellow card for Redruth’s centre, Sam Parsons. Time was running out in the half and Stortford opted for a scrum instead of a penalty and Nick Hankin took full advantage, stepping in from the wing at first receiver to force his way between two tacklers to touch down for his team’s second try. Banks’ conversion attempt bounced out off an upright, but Stortford went into the break very happy with a 15-0 lead, which in no way reflected the balance of possession and territory, but equally was by no means a trav- esty of justice, given the incisiveness of Stortford’s rugby, when they started getting it right.

The second half bore this out, as the home side’s running rugby started to gain control, even though, because of Redruth’s continued pressure, this often had to start inside Stortford’s own 22. Much im- proved ball retention allowed positions to be built, from which some stunning rugby was played. This was epitomised by the try scored by Will Roberts after 8 minutes of the second half, when the prop was able to cut inside to touch down, after a great initial break by Banks allowed him to swap passes with Johnny Neville to cut the Redruth defence to ribbons. Banks converted to stretch the lead to 22 points and this became 27, 7 minutes later when some incisive 15 man rugby exploited a great lineout steal by James Apperley in the Stortford 22 to set Hankin free to run in his second try out wide. The conversion attempt went just wide, as it did 12 minutes later, after, Dec Caulfield rounded off another rumbustious game from the hooker to finish off some more great team handling to touch down out wide. The home side was now well in control, but Redruth refused to throw in the towel and a period of late forward pressure on the Stortford line eventually produced at the death a consolation try, scored by livewire scrumhalf, Jack Oulton, well converted by replacement, Brett Rule to take the final score to 32-7.

Given the strength of today’s opposition and the inevitable disruption caused by the loss of Tom Coleman so early on, the team performance produced by Stortford in this huge match was possibly the best of the season and was produced at a crucial juncture, with rivals, Chinnor failing to take any points from their visit to Clifton. Our thanks go to Matchday sponsors, Close Brothers and to Man of the Match sponsors, GQ Wealth Management, whose award rightly went to Tom Banks who, even though playing out of position for most of the game was outstanding.

90302 TP Bishops Stortford Ad (210x140mm) FINAL.indd 1 20/08/2015 08:23 Chinnor 27 Bishop’s Stortford 25 Stortford do their huge band of traveling supporters proud, but come up very marginally short in a real ding dong match at second-placed Chinnor.

Stortford set their stall out from the first dropout, going through phase after phase, eventually forcing a penalty, which Tom Banks comfortably slotted for a 3 point lead after 3 minutes. Unfortunately, the control previously shown was markedly lacking at the restart, when a knock-on from the attempted catch bounced straight to Chinnor’s wing, Luke Hibberd, who took full advantage to slice his way through the remaining defence for a try and an easy conversion for his flyhalf. Stortford bounced straight back onto the attack and added another 3 points through Banks, after Chinnor once again chose the damage-limitation option of conceding a penalty, rather than face more of Stortford’s 15 man running rugby. The game then swung to and fro with little to choose between two highly-committed, attack-minded teams, until a rather harsh pen- alty was awarded on 28 minutes for a high tackle, as a Stortford player challenged a Chinnor player, falling to his knees. This took the home side into the Stortford 22., where they took full advantage, going through several phases of hard driving from their forwards, before moving it wide and a smart inside pass allowed a threequarter to crash over for a good try, that was easily converted. Stortford were undaunted and finally capitalised on some more good attacking rugby some 5 minutes later, when Jimmy Rea caught a hanging Sam Winter chip kick under severe pressure to touch down his side’s first try. Banks made an excellent conver- sion from out wide to narrow the deficit to a single point, which was how the half finished, with Stortford again camped in the Chinnor 22.

Play once again swung back and forth at the start of the second period, but Stortford eventually pushed into the home 22. Two penalties in quick succession went to touch and from the second, Chinnor were unable to stop a well driven maul, which saw Dec Caulfield touch down out wide for an unconverted try after 52 miinutes. Chinnor once again, though took no time in retaliating and three minutes later were back in the lead, after scrumhalf, Greg Goodfellow made one of of his characteristic snipes from the base of a scrum and a clever inside pass to Jonny Bentley allowed the flyhalf to run in for a converted try. Play once again swung Stortford’s way from the restart and eventually the ball found its way to Nic Clancey, on as a first half injury replacement for centre, Johnny Neville. He initially had the ball stripped in contact, but recovered very quickly to circle back, retrieve the loose ball and embark on a mazy run, with a combination of power and pace seeing him to the try line from halfway for a brilliant individual try. This gave Banks a relatively easy conversion to take his side into a 4 point lead. Unfortunately this was again short-lived, with Chinnor capitalising on another apparently harsh penalty for a deemed high tackle under the Stortford posts to get within a point. The home side once more surged onto the attack and another dart by Goodfellow led to a penalty after 73 minutes, which flyhalf, Bentley slotted nervelessly to establish a 2 point lead for his side. Stortford battled back once more and were unlucky that two testing kicks at goal both went narrowly wide. As time was running out, the home team launched yet another fierce assault on the Stortford line in the search for their 4th try and a bonus point, but the visitor’s defence held tight. When the ball was turned over via a home knock-on, Stortford refused to settle for the losing bonus point and ran out of their 22, briefly threatening a breakaway, winning score. Chinnor’s scramble defence, though was up to the challenge and halted the attack on half way. It is perhaps significant and a compliment to Stortford, that the home team, having won a turnover were happy to bring the match to a close by kicking to touch, rather than risking all for the chance of a potentially crucial 4 try bonus point.

This was a breathless encounter between two highly motivated and competitive sides, which could have gone either way right to the end. Stortford’s losing bonus point leaves us 7 points clear of both OEs and Chinnor (the former ahead, based on the number of games won) with three games to go. Next by the Reading outfit in early December - albeit with Tom Coleman, Johnny Neville and Sam Winter then missing - another top performamce will be needed.

COACHES CORNER

Everyone knows the view of a physio running onto the pitch with their ‘magic sponge’, (or now ice pack), less well known is the work we do with the players to keep them fit, and unfortunately sometimes ‘rehabilitate’ them from a more serious injury.

This season we’ve had to deal with 4 ‘big’ injuries – 2 ruptured muscles, (an Achilles Tendon and a ‘Pec’ – the big chest muscle), the ‘dreaded’ knee ACL ligament, and a broken arm as well as many calf strains, ankle and knee ligament sprains, sore necks, backs and dozens of bruised muscles (weekly!)

The road to recovery begins at the injury - managing the injury well, or badly can make an enormous difference – imagine standing on a broken leg! Equally an ankle sprain danced on all night will lead to a very sore ankle the next morning! Thankfully they are cooped up on a return bus journey for 50% of the games (and are sensible lads they will tell you !) The next stage is managing the injury immediately or sending them to hospital to check for more serious damage – usually broken bones. If they don’t need to go to hospital, we use a system called POLICE for 48 hours before we review on Mondays.

• Protect – ie don’t hurt it, use crutches or a moonboot etc. • Optimal Loading – we no longer rest the injury – we do as much as we can do without increasing pain significantly (which isn’t usually much!) This actually helps to heal the injured tissue quicker. • Ice – For 10 minutes every hour ideally for 24-48 hours. • Compression – this compresses the damaged blood vessels, and so reduces bleeding into the tissues. • Elevate – Elevate the part above the heart to reduce swelling and bleeding.

After reviewing a player we can then make a much better decision about how long they will be before they play again. Strapping the players can make a huge difference particularly with ankles and elbows bringing them back 3-4 weeks sooner often.

If they aren’t able to play, they receive rehab on Tuesday and/or Thursday. This takes place when the other players have gone out to train, and so can be a frustrating time. As lovely as Sylvie is, Paul clever and myself amazingly witty and funny – this really isn’t where players want to be – especially those that travel a long way to train with us.

Thankfully we work with a really great group of players, and to a man they always work hard at rehab with a great sense of humour, pushing themselves to get back out on the pitch where we all want them, as soon as they possibly can.

Chris Lansdowne When it comes to supporting our local rugby club, we’re in the front row.

2017 has already proved to be a year in which the perception of women’s sport has been significantly elevated and has seen the development of campaigns and celebrations such as “TeamUp,” “This Girl Can” and the Warrior Camps hosted by England Rugby. Designed to alter and raise perceptions about women’s rugby - a sport which has previously fallen victim to being pigeon-holed as a sport for the more well-built and slightly masculine female - this year has also seen Scottish Rugby stepping up its efforts to encourage more women to start playing the sport, launching its successful #BeTheBestYouCan campaign. Promoting participation levels and capitalising on increasing the popularity of the sport amongst both beginners and existing players, it has undoubtedly been a fruitful crusade. With over 250 established university and senior teams across the UK, from Inverness to Yeovil, now affiliated with the , there are now over 7,000 women enjoying regularly playing organised rugby union.

No longer is “serious rugby” an exclusively male bastion either. Thus far 2017 has been a year for the record books in terms of international level women’s rugby - with augmented publicity, awareness and some astonishing success. It would be fair to say that the future of women’s rugby is now not only safe but showing huge growth potential and great promise. One only has to glance at this year’s Six Nations results to see that the current England Ladies are blazing the trail for future sides. Becoming the first national team in the history of the tournament not to concede a single try, England Ladies have played a vital role in promoting the sport and raising awareness of the potential for high level participation. The 2016/17 season for England Ladies according to the RFU has been ‘outstanding,’ and defeating Scotland and Wales in the RBS Six Nations 64-0 and 63-0 respectively, they are a force to be reckoned with. As the England Rugby promotional material says … “Women’s Rugby is a game like no other. It is a sport like no other. It is a sport for the many, not the few. It is about confidence and contact, fitness and femininity, pride and performance.” A women’s rugby team offers opportunities for every female physique where all can make a contribution to the game and feel a valued part of the team.

Anybody watching the exhilarating Women’s Rugby 7’s competition of the Olympic Games last summer will have noticed the likes of Portia Woodman, Charlotte Caslick and Abbie Brown showcasing extraordinary skill, speed and strength. 2017 sees Ireland host the Women’s Rugby World Cup, and the RFU have recently announced their intentions to have double the amount of women playing rugby by 2021. The Olympics undoubtedly provided a platform for women’s rugby that it had never experienced previously, and the media coverage of the tournament was a rare and refreshing example of an encapsulation of the capability of women not just in rugby, but as athletes in general. Bill Pulver, CEO of Australia Rugby Union, has stressed the importance of “normalising the role of women” in the game. This is an aspect of the sport that should not be underestimated or overlooked; encouraging women to pick up a rugby ball without any sentiments of self consciousness is a hurdle that many have struggled and will find testing to overcome. Ladies Rugby | THE LADIES MAKE THEIR MARK

Training once a week, BSRFC Ladies have become one of the aforementioned 250 clubs in the UK to possess a female side - and a flourishing one at that. The progress that has been achieved even in the short 3 months since the side was established is quite outstanding. An eclectic mix, the team consists of, for the most part total beginners, although the handful of more experienced players we do possess have proved to be vital in our comprehension of the game and confidence levels. From power lifters and sprinters to hockey and softball players, each individual has brought to the team a range of talents and it has been down to superb management and coaching that the ladies have each found their niche in the team. Competitive fixtures have been spectacles of endurance and strength, with the ladies flaunting their newly acquired skills to lead the squad to victories.

The recent triumph against Chelmsford Ladies - with Bishop’s Stortford winning 55-42 - was an ostentatious display of the team’s growth and the squad were unanimous in their agreement that it was the pinnacle of their hard work. The commitment of the ladies has been admirable and has highlighted the demand to find fixtures against more opponents and possibly even raising a second team. Looking to the future VICKS RICARDO BREAKS THROUGH CHELMSFORD of BSRFC, we have welcomed DEFENCE BEFORE SCORING A TRY younger members to the club that have also shown great promise in training. Although this has proved difficult coaching-wise in terms of playing full contact rugby, it will surely prove to be beneficial in the longer term and in ensuring that the sport continues to grow in popularity amongst younger women. The next couple of months are set to be busy ones for the BSRFC Ladies and the team - along with their growing fan base - eagerly wait to discover what the future holds. We talk a lot about a “One Club Ethos” and yet here we are with THREE Clubs within BSRFC ;- The 100 Club, The Oval Club and Club Stortford.

Each exists for the same purpose – raising additional funds, but each has their own priorities. The 100 Club has been around the longest where the member donates on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis to be entered into a monthly draw of £100 and an annual draw of £1,000.

The Oval Club and Club Stortford are introduced below and you will note how each have their own priorities when it comes to supporting areas within the Club.

Which are you a member of ? Apart from helping with Club Finances the Oval Club and Club Stortford provide a social environment for meeting like minded people and fulfilling the one purpose - BSRFC CLUB STORTFORD Now in its fourth season, Club Stortford was set up by a small working party, to support the 1stXV squad after promotion to National League Rugby in 2013/14. Our aim is “to ensure Bishop’s Stortford RFC has a sustainable future in National League Rugby and continues to nurture home grown talent.”

Working in conjunction with the 1stXV coaching team, CS provides funding for various expenditure beyond the financial resources of the main club. These are specific to the first team squad, and include items such as strength and conditioning, video analysis of matches, equipment, travel and overnight stays for long distance away fixtures.

Director of Rugby, Andy Long, has reiterated on a number of occasions the importance he attaches to the financial support given by Club Stortford. Quite simply, without it’s support, the team would not be able to perform at such currently high levels. Two third place finishes, together with a second place play off in the last three seasons is an outstanding achievement. Club Stortford currently has 30 like-minded members, all willing to provide the necessary funds to allow the club to continue to play at the current level. These are either individual, corporate or syndicate members, enjoying various benefits associated with their membership.

We continue to look for new members, to allow us to broaden and deepen the extent of our support. We would urge you to consider joining Club Stortford. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact our secretary, Russell Cattell 07778 101988, or our chairman Neil Parker 07860 300080.

THE OVAL CLUB

In 1998 some Rugby Club members got together to try to find a way of raising funds to help the Club. Several schemes were discussed but ultimately The Oval Club was founded with the aim ‘To contribute towards promoting the highest possible standard of rugby throughout Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club’. A committee of five was formed and it was decided that The Oval Club should be autonomous and entirely independent of the Rugby Club’s financial and administrative operations. It communicates with the Rugby Club through one person who channels all requests for financial assistance to The Oval Club with the full knowledge of the Rugby Club’s Executive Committee.

From The Oval Club’s fund two thirds of the income are donated to specific projects that the Rugby Club wants to undertake and the other third is reserved for a members’ fund to provide social occasions as a means of payback. A principle that The Oval Club has always stood by is that it will endeavour to provide funds for one-off projects and not regular requirements that should be undertaken through the budget of the Rugby Club. It has been instrumental in providing funds to start projects such as the drainage and floodlighting of the back pitches, improvement and maintenance of all playing surfaces, supporting Youth and Mini through, tours, kit and additional playing facilities and refurbishing changing room showers. Without this starter outside funding would not have been forthcoming. The Oval Club has raised over £204,000 of which the Rugby Club has received in excess of £130,000 for its projects. On the social side of The Oval Club members have enjoyed several events each year provided by their fund.

The membership has remained around 70 and any would-be members are invited to join by contacting John Robinson, the Secretary.

It can be seen that The Oval Club has played a considerable part in providing much needed funds for the Rugby Club to provide facilities to help it enhance its reputation within the rugby community at large and possibly without these funds the Rugby Club would have been poorly placed to achieve the results and standards it seeks.
