01279 757 333 proco.com PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Welcome once again everyone to Silver Leys particularly the Players, Officials and supporters of Irish Wild Geese Rugby Club, along with everyone associated with Elms BMW, our Match Day sponsors & Bit Solutions, our Man of the Match sponsors.

Last Saturday saw us convert our game in hand into the full five league points and in doing so we climbed above Chinnor into 1st place in the table. In truth it was a bit of a strange game, more akin to a preseason friendly in the way the teams took it in turns to score seemingly at will. Hopefully things will settle down a little this week and our defence will regain its normal miserly form. And they may need to because our visitors today the Wild Geese have a reputation for spreading their wings & playing expansive rugby, at times to their own detriment. But that should of course mean that we spectators are in for a real treat. For much of the season LIWG seem to have gone under the radar- neither threatening the top or bottom of the league. But as the teams near the foot of the table have begun to wake up to the reality of relegation they have inexorably been dragged into the dog fight. They currently sit just one point above the drop zone and this will of course give them, even though it probably isn’t needed, added motivation to spoil our day. Away from the 1st XV at the time of writing we have a two other games at home today. Our Blues take on London Scottish RFC & our Chindits –Weston RFC. Our Abbotts are unfortunately without a game.

Meanwhile our Mitres (3rd XV) who today travel to Letchworth, have had a tough time of late in terms of actually getting to play games. Far too many fixtures have, for a variety of reasons, gone un- played. Their match on 18th Feb against Fullerians was their first since 10th December! That clearly is far from ideal and I know representations have been made in the hope that a solution can be found. We are not alone in experiencing this difficulty, indeed our Nat 2 South rivals RFC have earlier this week submitted some proposals of their own to RFU aimed at addressing the lack of competitive fixtures for their 2nd & 3rd XV’s. A couple of seasons ago we recognised that energising & challenging our Blues was a key to building a stronger 1st XV. It’s apparent that we now need to do the same thing for our Mitres!

Tomorrow our U18’s travel to Chinnor in the last 16 of the National Colts Cup competition. We of course wish them all the best for what promises to be a closely fought encounter. Finally at some point today you may be approached by one of the organisers of our U13 tour to Dublin this April wishing to sell you some raffle tickets. To date they’ve raised in excess of £3000 toward the costs of the trip that will involve the majority of the lads in the age group but need a little bit more in order to reach their target and keep the individual costs affordable for all. They have two fixtures arranged against Malahide RFC and Old Suttonians RFC. Please look kindly upon them and give generously. Your support of their efforts is greatly appreciated. Whichever of the (hopefully) three games you choose to watch I hope you have a great day with us here at Silver Leys COYB!

“Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Silver Leys for round 24 of our league campaign. Well last week you were treated to 76 points, which really was credit to the way both sides approached the game, we always knew that Canterbury would come to play and they didn’t disappoint. I thought that we produced some of our best attacking shape last week and the lads are transferring the hard work in training into performances at the weekend.

We were obviously slightly disappointed to concede as many points as we did last week and realise we’ll need to be better as we move into the final part of the season.

ELMS STANSTED, YOUR Our away fixture against the Wild Geese produced 66 points so again we face a side that wants to play LOCAL BMW RETAILER. rugby and we know we have to continue to balance confidence with vigilance. London Irish Wild Geese, are an amateur English club based in Sunbury-on-Thames, , who as of 2016-17 will play their rugby in . They are the amateur team of London Irish and play at Hazelwood

London Irish RFC was founded in 1898 as a ‘home’ for sporting Irishmen in London. Their foundation coincided with the arrival in London of veterinary surgeon who represented Ireland 27 times at outside-half. He was a vital presence and attracted many other of his countrymen to the club. The creation of was first discussed in 1995 when rugby union became professional and London Irish set aside resources for the creation of an amateur team. In 1996 the arrival of the professional game affected LI more than most. After many meetings it was decided to form an Amateur club to run alongside the professional outfit The club was founded in September 1999 after London Irish left The Avenue to play at the Twickenham Stoop before moving to Madejski Stadium in Reading the following year. It was formed to be the feeder club for senior and junior amateur players to then go on to play for London Irish. What better name for the 1stXV than Wild Geese, a name already synonymous with the club

In 2011, they were promoted from London 1 into National League 3 London & SE. In 2012, they were moved into National League 3 South West,.In 2013, they were promoted into National League 2 .South

Having had rapid promotion over the past four/five years, season 2016/17 looks to have been a season for reappraisal. But results since Christmas must have been disappointing. When Bishop’s Stortford played them in November they attacked at every opportunity and were leading by 17 points when Stortford gradually took over possession and territory running out ultimate winners 31 - 36.

There will not be time for slacking today

The British & Irish Lions can trace their roots back all the way to 1888, 1891 saw the first officially sanctioned tour to the southern hemisphere from ‘the British Isles’, before 1899 heralded a travelling party containing players representing each of the four home nations for the first time.

The Lions are a Test side, and generally select international players, but they can pick uncapped players available to any one of the four unions. Team colours For more than half a century, the Lions have been synonymous with the red that sports the amalgamated crests of the four unions.

Warren Gatland insists he is in no rush to pick his captain for this summer's tour. He insists that he will be leaving his decision "as late as possible"

Dylan Hartley

If Hartley leads to back-to-back grand slams, surpassing New Zealand’s record of 18 consecutive victories, then his leadership credentials will be close to unanswerable.

Sam Warburton

Warren Gatland’s most trusted lieutenant. The has captained Wales for most of Gatland’s reign as head coach and was also his Lions skipper in 2013.

Alun Wyn Jones

Captained the Lions in the decisive third Test against Australia in 2013 and has recently taken over as Wales skipper. No doubt over inspirational leadership or considerable playing qualities.

Rory Best

Has feather in his cap of captaining Ireland to victory against New Zealand in an autumn during which South Africa and Australia were also defeated.

Owen Farrell

If your criteria is the Lions captain should be one of the first names on the team sheet then Farrell should be the favourite. In immense form following on from World Rugby Player of the Year nomination in 2016.

Bishop’s Stortford 46 Canterbury 30 Stortford subdue a determined Canterbury side to move to the top of the table again in this match deferred from January.

With expectations high, after last week’s outstanding second half at , Stortford started disap- pointingly, conceding a soft penalty for what barely constituted a challenge an instant before a leaping Canterbury player, fielding a good box kick from Tom Banks, touched the ground. This indiscretion was then compounded by some poor tackling, which allowed Canterbury to free right wing, Kieran Thomp- son to run in a try from around the halfway line. Will Hilton converted, but the scores were level within 8 minutes, when Stortford had regathered themselves to go through many phases of powerful forward drives, with Dec Caulfield and Seb Brownhill to the fore, before unleashing the backs and a great line run from Nick Hankin off the wing saw him take a perfectly-timed short pass from Tom Coleman to crash over under the posts. This gave Tom Banks an easy conversion. Still falling well short of last week’s high standards, though a poor chase of another good box kick from Banks allowed Canterbury to counterat- tack and win a kickable penalty, which Hilton duly converted to take his side back into the lead. This was short-lived, however and a resurgent Stortford were rewarded after 5 minutes with a try to Johnny Nev- ille, again built on some great forwards’ play, but rounded off with some mesmerising first-time passing between the big centre, Nick Hankin and Will Simmonds to leave the visitors’ defence floundering. Banks’ conversion stretched the lead to 4 points and this became 9 within 5 minutes, when Simmonds ran in to touch down out wide from some 30 yards out, after an incisive break by Hankin. Banks’ great conversion attempt bounced back from the crossbar. Stortford’s 4th, bonus point try followed within 4 minutes, when Banks scored a typically battling try, driving over through three defenders, after more excellent play by his threequarters had put his side into the red zone. His conversion attempt went narrowly wide but almost straight from the restart, Stortford were penalised at a breakdown, giving Hilton a relatively easy 3 points. A seemingly harsh yellow card was then shown to John George for impeding Canterbury’s 9, as he ran a quick penalty from inside his own 22, but the next score, nevertheless, went to the home team, as Jimmy Rea ferreted the ball from the base of a maul stopped right on the Canterbury line for an unconverted try. The determined visitors were undaunted by the 16-point deficit, however and proceed- ed to go through many phases of aggressive rugby, mostly through their powerfull forwards to suck in the Stortford defence and eventually give right winger, Guy Hilton room out wide, which he exploited to the full, with a smart chip ahead and chase to regather and run round under the posts. This gave his brother an easy conversion and narrowed the halftime points gap to only 9 points.

In the cold and blustery conditions, the quality of rugby in the second period could not match that of the first and play became more fragmented. Thus it was that the next try, after 8 minutes of the half, came from an individual burst from Stortford’s Matt Tomlinson, who broke the first tackle and then used his pace to run around the remaining defence to touch down under the posts, giving Banks an easy extra 2 points. Six minutes later, though a yellow card to Dan Elsom, penalised, not for the first time, at a breakdown, took momentum away from the home side, as the resultant penalty under Stortford’s posts was kicked by Hilton. Banks responded in kind almost immediately, as Canterbury were penalised twice in quick succession, but Stortford carelessness from the restart produced a knock-on and an immediate penalty, as a team-mate played the ball from an offside position. The penalty went to touch and, this led almost immediately to a penalty try, as Stortford were blown up for going in at the side of a maul, driving at their line from the resultant lineout.. Hilton’s conversion, just before Elsom’s sin-bin period ran out again narrowed Stortford’s lead to 9 points. With Canterbury’s aggressive and unpredictable approach to the game, this was a far from comfortable position, but any nerves that home players and supporters may have felt were effectively settled 7 minutes later, when Neville bagged his second try. The centre ran a great line onto an early short pass from the base of a maul from a 5 metre lineout, when the visitors were set to defend the expected forwards’ drive. Banks’ conversion stretched the lead to 16 points and, although the visitors hurled themselves into a desperate search for their own bonus point try, the home defence held firm, with some determined tackling in their own 22.

Price Bailey Man of the Match went to Steve Ball for his great 80 minute shift in both attack and defence, at the heart of some excellent loose play by the whole pack, with James Apperley also outstanding.

That's not English sour grapes, far from it. I readily acknowledge that considering we were watching elite professional players, the guys in white were disappointingly slow to recognise and adapt to the challenge they had been set. No the reason the law will in my opinion need to be redrafted to obviate this tactic, the sole purpose of which is to stifle creativity and cause frustration, is because without a clear and unambiguous "off side" line the game when played by the vast majority of its participants worldwide will become an unholy mess. Chaos in fact.

That’s not English sour grapes, far from it. I readily acknowledge that considering we were watching elite professional players, the guys in white were disappointingly slow to recognise and adapt to the challenge they had been set. No the reason the law will in my opinion need to be redrafted to obviate this tactic, the sole purpose of which is to stifle creativity and cause frustration, is because without a clear and unambiguous “off side” line the game when played by the vast majority of its participants worldwide will become an unholy mess. Chaos in fact.

Setting aside the fact that international Rugby is meant to be mass entertainment and what we all witnessed on Sunday wasn’t half the product it should have been, If the very best players England has to offer were for 40 minutes so utterly flummoxed by the situation and a team of 5 elite match officials found the tactic almost impossible to consistently adjudicate upon, then what would (or will) be the impact on all the lower levels of the game probably starting today!

This was the point which I think Matt Dawson, the ex- England RWC winning scrum- half was trying to make in the social media storm that erupted post-match.

I suspect it’ll be a while before another international team try the same ploy. The debate this outing has generated means that every test player now knows exactly how to counteract it. But frankly they are not my overriding concern. The real problem for us lies in those who will inevitably seek to copycat it at all the lower levels and this is a point seemingly lost on the majority of pundits

Despite rugby’s detailed laws much of what happens on the pitch is subject to an individual referee’s interpretation of them. Two weeks ago at Taunton we had a referee used to officiating at Level 3 and it wasn’t I believe a coincidence that we achieved more turnovers in that one game that we have in the rest of the season. Last week against Canterbury those same match situations resulted in us conceding penalties! I refereed for a number of years and hence have the upmost respect for match officials and the challenge they accept each week. Their job was difficult enough before Sunday what on earth will it be like now?!

How is a Level 10 referee working alone, without the benefit of TV replays meant to police the ‘no ruck’ tactic and even if they can is that the kind of game anyone is going to enjoy being involved in? The game will degenerate into little more than a Royal Shrovetide Football Match- or ‘Get the ball across the line by whatever means possible’.

So sorry Italy -well done for finding a way to stay competitive but as Eddie Jones effectively said immediately after the game it wasn’t the game I love or want to enjoy watching at all levels in the future. Results Grid 1ST HALF OF SEASON RETURN FIXTURES 2ND HALF OF SEASON

COACHES CORNER

The long hatd road back from injury Injuries are part and parcel of the game of rugby, and every player will endure some sort of injury during their playing days. Some more then others....

Coming back from any injury is a hard and sometimes lonely affair. Whilst the boys are out training on a Tuesday and Thursday night, you will be at the gym or in the physio room doing all you can to get your body ready for the vigour’s of rugby. I don’t feel you will ever be 100% fit these days, the sheer physicality and speed of the game has increased so much over the years, its almost getting yourself as fit as possible to compete to the best of your ability. The toughest part is having to watch your teammates go out to play, whilst you stand there as a spectator, not being able to help, however this tends to motivate you to work harder and get back to fitness even quicker....

But injuries can also open the door for others, and this has certainly been the case for James Apperley, who has stepped up since the injury to Mark McCraith down at Clifton. Mark has been missed over the past month, you can’t ever replace a player of that quality, but James’s performances have been nothing less then superb and has given us a new dimension to our game. Would this opportunity have risen without Mark’s injury? Maybe not, but the strength in depth we now possess means we can cover and adapt to injuries, something in the past we may not have had..... Let’s hope for a top performance today against a dangerous London Irish side, who at their place caused us a number of problems. Its going to be a exciting end to the season, the playing and coaching staff would like to thank all the supporters for their continued support and we look forward to having you with us until the end....

tel: 03332 400919 web: www.connectscaffolding.co.uk LEAGUE RESTRUCTURE – GOING FORWARD Following on from the previous Programme articles on this topic, should the Championship survive untouched, could we see a remodelled semi-professional tier of English Rugby?

Using the current model a new, super National League would comprise the 48 teams currently split evenly between and National Leagues 2 North and South. In order to prevent any significant fixture congestion, these 48 teams would be split into three conferences of 16 teams apiece, organised by geographical location to reduce travel time and expenses.

So how would it play out on the pitch? Every team in each conference would play the others home and away for a total of 30 games within an isolated league structure, the same as it is now. Ensuring a continuation of the current schedule means game time would not be limited for all participants and there are no additional travel costs or logistics to incur for less affluent teams. Following the completion of the ‘regular’ season, the two teams ranked #1 and #2 in their respective conferences would then proceed to an eight-team play-off joined by two – to borrow an Americanism - ‘wildcard’ teams. Determined by points total, this would be the two teams who finished with the best points totals outside of the first or second place team in their conference. Conventional logic would assume this would be two teams who finished third in their respective conference but depending on points amassed could be a further two teams from just one of the three conferences (for example the Northern). These eight teams would then be ranked 1-8 by their final points totals and would then face each other in reverse order (1 versus 8, 2 versus 7 etc.). The subsequent games would continue to be decided by the end-of-season rankings to ensure competitiveness late into the season given that the higher your final points total, the easier path to the ‘Grand Final’ would be. Following the first two play-off ‘rounds’ the two remaining teams would meet to decide the final league champion. It should be remembered that this is simply a possible template to follow should the RFU ultimately decide to ring-fence the professional leagues (Premiership and Championship) and integrate National Leagues 1, 2 North and 2 South into a unilateral second tier of English rugby. The benefits of organising the semi-professional leagues wholly by geography are obvious, with specific focus on a reduction in travel time and travel costs. Integrating the three leagues / two tiers however would also allow lower-league clubs greater exposure to a higher level of competitive rugby and would be augmented by an RFU mandated loan/farm system to supplement ‘second tier’ clubs with young Premiership players in need of game time and a similar proposal was included in a previous article on the concept of a semi-pro Championship. The most pertinent trepidation regarding this radical new structure however would be the enduring concern of (un)competitiveness. Whilst National Leagues 1 and 2 do currently operate a system of promotion and relegation, as is usually the case in semi-professional rugby there is a clear divide between the NL1 teams currently hunting for promotion into the Championship and who have the capacity to support a move into professional rugby (, , Moseley) and those who are currently languishing at the bottom of the North and South National League 2 (Exmouth, Sheffield Tigers) and could be forced back into regional union. A comprehensive survey would have to be conducted prior to the implementation of a new league in order to ascertain which clubs have the financial means to perform consistently as part of a ‘second tier’ level, especially as it would severely test the long term financial viability of clubs at this level. We talk a lot about a “One Club Ethos” and yet here we are with THREE Clubs within BSRFC ;- The 100 Club, The Oval Club and Club Stortford.

Each exists for the same purpose – raising additional funds, but each has their own priorities. The 100 Club has been around the longest where the member donates on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis to be entered into a monthly draw of £100 and an annual draw of £1,000.

The Oval Club and Club Stortford are introduced below and you will note how each have their own priotities when it comes to supporting areas within the Club.

Which are you a member of ? Apart from helping with Club Finances the Oval Club and Club Stortford provide a social environment for meeting like minded people and fulfilling the one purpose - BSRFC CLUB STORTFORD Now in its fourth season, Club Stortford was set up by a small working party, to support the 1stXV squad after promotion to National League Rugby in 2013/14. Our aim is “to ensure Bishop’s Stortford RFC has a sustainable future in National League Rugby and continues to nurture home grown talent.”

Working in conjunction with the 1stXV coaching team, CS provides funding for various expenditure beyond the financial resources of the main club. These are specific to the first team squad, and include items such as strength and conditioning, video analysis of matches, equipment, travel and overnight stays for long distance away fixtures.

Director of Rugby, Andy Long, has reiterated on a number of occasions the importance he attaches to the financial support given by Club Stortford. Quite simply, without it’s support, the team would not be able to perform at such currently high levels. Two third place finishes, together with a second place play off in the last three seasons is an outstanding achievement. Club Stortford currently has 30 likeminded members, all willing to provide the necessary funds to allow the club to continue to play at the current level. These are either individual, corporate or syndicate members, enjoying various benefits associated with their membership.

We continue to look for new members, to allow us to broaden and deepen the extent of our support. We would urge you to consider joining Club Stortford. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact our secretary, Russell Cattell 07778 101988, or our chairman Neil Parker 07860 300080.

THE OVAL CLUB

In 1998 some Rugby Club members got together to try to find a way of raising funds to help the Club. Several schemes were discussed but ultimately The Oval Club was founded with the aim ‘To contribute towards promoting the highest possible standard of rugby throughout Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club’. A committee of five was formed and it was decided that The Oval Club should be autonomous and entirely independent of the Rugby Club’s financial and administrative operations. It communicates with the Rugby Club through one person who channels all requests for financial assistance to The Oval Club with the full knowledge of the Rugby Club’s Executive Committee.

From The Oval Club’s fund two thirds of the income are donated to specific projects that the Rugby Club wants to undertake and the other third is reserved for a members’ fund to provide social occasions as a means of payback. A principle that The Oval Club has always stood by is that it will endeavour to provide funds for one-off projects and not regular requirements that should be undertaken through the budget of the Rugby Club. It has been instrumental in providing funds to start projects such as the drainage and floodlighting of the back pitches, improvement and maintenance of all playing surfaces, supporting Youth and Mini through, tours, kit and additional playing facilities and refurbishing changing room showers. Without this starter outside funding would not have been forthcoming. The Oval Club has raised over £204,000 of which the Rugby Club has received in excess of £130,000 for its projects. On the social side of The Oval Club members have enjoyed several events each year provided by their fund.

The membership has remained around 70 and any would-be members are invited to join by contacting John Robinson, the Secretary.

It can be seen that The Oval Club has played a considerable part in providing much needed funds for the Rugby Club to provide facilities to help it enhance its reputation within the rugby community at large and possibly without these funds the Rugby Club would have been poorly placed to achieve the results and standards it seeks.
