01279 757 333 proco.com PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Season’s greetings rugby watchers! Welcome to Silver Leys for our final home game before Christmas and of course 2016. I would especially like to welcome the Players, Officials and Supporters of RFC. Everyone lucky enough to be here for our last home match against league leaders Chinnor will agree that they witnessed a compelling game. Even better it resulted in us registering a five point win over our rivals whilst restricting them to just the one try bonus point. Whilst the outcome of the match was never going to have a decisive impact on either team’s future. Our victory certainly made things a lot tighter at the top and sent the majority of those present, home with a smile on their face. I did say that a vocal crowd would make all the difference and so it proved. In the process we also discovered that we have some very capable ‘Banter-mime villains’ in our midst –Boo-Hiss!!

Last Saturday at Redingensians was just as exciting. We managed to snatch a bonus point victory from half-way down the throat of defeat. Whilst we undoubtedly deserved to win the game, a combination of us failing to score enough points in a first half which we dominated and our host’s outstanding midfield defence, meant that it looked for all the world that we were going to lose out. But our guys somehow managed to find a way through with the last play, Man of the Match - Ryan Hutler delivering an inspired little grubber kick that totally wrong footed the Rams defence allowing Nick Hankin to apply the final golden touch.

Today’s opponents Exmouth were promoted as Champions of National Three (South West) last season. However as countless teams have found in the past, the step up to Level 4 can be daunting and they have won just once & drawn another of their matches to date. Yet those bald facts don’t tell the whole story. They clearly know how to attack having scored nine tries in their last two games. We’ve said many times before, this is a highly competitive league and there can be no room for complacency from our guys, as our visitors are more than capable of delivering us a shock. In other senior’s related news, our Blues haven’t played for a couple of weeks but today entertain Ampthill in a Zoo Shield Div. 1 fixture. Our Mitres have recorded two good wins in the last fortnight beating both Fullerians 2’s & Hertford 3’s to currently sit 2nd in Herts Middlesex Merit League One.

On Sunday 18th our Colts play host to Old Rutlishians RFC (Wimbledon- seeing as you asked) in the 4th round of the National Colts Cup. KO 1pm. Also on that day our Minis section are holding their traditional festive fancy dress themed Coaches vs Parents ‘Touch’ Rugby match, raising money for my charity – Ellies Fund. Your support for both these events would be greatly appreciated. As indeed it will be if you’re minded to travel to support the 1st XV at Bury St Edmunds next Saturday. All of which just leaves me to say, I hope you enjoy your time at the club today and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a successful New Year.

Elms The Ultimate Stansted Driving Machine D.O.R SAYS

THE boys are working really hard at the moment and we are in that sticky patch of the season where the weather is starting to close in and people pick up knocks.

It is a difficult time of the season but we have to maintain our focus against Exmouth this Saturday.

They might be bottom of the table, but to call them a potential banana skin is disrespectful to sides who have come up and we’ll make sure we do our homework on them. We know that they will make it difficult for us and will be fighting to make it hard for us so we have to stay disciplined. We want to put in a decent performance at Silver Leys, our final home game before Christmas to do that we need to make sure we get our basics spot on.

With a few knocks it will be a good test of our squad and a chance to show the strength in depth that we have at the moment. A shining example of this has been Jack Scantelbury’s performances over the last few weeks. Jack has been great for the ELMS STANSTED, YOUR Blues this season and once again taken his chance in the 1st XV. ************************************************************ LOCAL BMW RETAILER. He attended Wisbech Grammar School which being a rugby school led to his first ever game experience was non-contact, tag rugby at the age of 7. At 15 he was invited to represent the school’s 1st XV and 1st 7’s. This was normally an honour reserved for upper 6th boys so he feelt very privileged to have represented both school first sides up until this summer when he finishing ‘A’ Levels and left school at 18.

Like so many amongst his rugby highlights include being brought on with only 5 minutes for his debut against Wasp’s U20’s and scoring the winning try, In his ssecond game against Ealing Trailfinders he went a few steps further by scoring a hat trick. Since then he has represented West Norfolk Rugby Club U15’s and U16’s - Norfolk (County) U15’s, U16’s & U17’s - Eastern County’s U15’s, U16’s & U17’s and Midlands U18’s Ryan is currently with U21’s Academy.

Sports runs throughout his entire circulation; a long term fan of Ma’a Nonu, nicknamed Rock the New Zealand Centre, “He has incredible line-breaking ability and aggressive crash-ball running”. From the round ball game sporting hero is Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid’s number 7. “He has an incredible work ethic and always strives for perfection”. Ryan also plays cricket for Wisbech Town and when not participating he enjoys watching NFL and cycling.

Leaving school with 9 GCSE’s and 3 A Levels he is now taking a year out to see where his dream will take him. That dream or ambition is to become a full time professional rugby player, and one can strive for one day playing for England. But who knows. Meanwhile he is able to work for his Dad in the family business dealing with ongoing maintenance and repair work

“Preparation at Stortford for game days is hard; Andy and his team take no prisoners” said Ryan. He has training and/or gym work on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. “So. although it’s hard it’s also fun. Everybody is focused everybody wants to win, and at the moment that’s what we are doing.”

“PERSON I WOULD MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: would be is Usain Bolt. He is the fastest person ever and one of the most successful and gifted athletes the world has ever seen. When he’s interviewed on TV and the media reports show him as having a really great sense of humour. GREAT MINDS THINK (AND ACT) ALIKE!

THE SUPPORT THAT ALL OF OUR SPONSORS GIVE US THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IS CRUCIAL TO BSRFC’S PLANS FOR CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH. WHILST WE PROUDLY PROCLAIM OURSELVES TO BE A TRUE COMMUNITY CLUB THAT SHOULDN’T BE INTERPRETED AS US LACKING AMBITION OR BEING OVERLY INSULAR. WE KNOW THAT FOR BSRFC THE KEY TO FUTURE SUCCESS LIES IN SUSTAINED INVESTMENT IN OUR YOUNG PLAYERS, OUR FACILITIES AND OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL BUSINESS. TEES BECAME SPONSORS OF THE 1ST XV AT THE START OF SEASON 2016-17. ORGANISATIONS COMMIT TO SPONSORSHIP FOR BUSINESS AND LONGER TERM ALTRUISTIC REASONS. WHY DID TEES SPONSOR BSRFC?

Why sponsoring the club makes commercial – and legal – sense! When the seeds of Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club were sewn in 1920, the legal firm Tees Law, known then as H. Stanley Tee, was itself a mere sapling, having been set up in 1913. In the 100 years since, both institutions have become sturdy oaks in the cultural and business life of Bishop’s Stortford.

Having shared this heritage, and having grown in tandem with the town during the past century, it was only natural that this year Tees Law, along with its financial arm, Tees Financial, agreed to become the principal sponsors of the rugby club until the end of the 2018-19 season.

For Tees, the sponsorship confirms its commitment to the community it has served for so long. In that time the firm has branched out across the region, to Cambridge, Chelmsford, Royston and Saffron Walden, but its head office remains in Bishop’s Stortford and many of its staff and clients live in the town. The firm sees the rugby club as part of the town’s sporting triumvirate that also includes the golf and cricket clubs, which Tees also support.

For Ashton Hunt, the law firm’s managing director, the sponsorship deal is good news for the town. “Sport can make a valuable contribution to communities and here in Bishop’s Stortford we’re lucky that the rugby club enjoys such success and support,” he said. “Tees’ ethos and values are similar to those of the rugby club. We are also highly successful and dedicated professionals, and this deal is a mark of what we have both achieved in recent years. It also is a sign that we both intend to continue being successful within the town and beyond.”

Of course any sponsorship has to be a beneficial two-way relationship. For the rugby club, it provides the vital financial support it needs to pursue its very individual approach to developing the game and securing its future in Bishop’s Stortford.

It is an approach that has paid off well, with the club now a well-established force in the National League Division Two South. The club has an established reputation for welcoming all newcomers who bring additional talents and experience, and who enhance the club. Running in parallel is a commitment to develop players and to promote from within. This formula has helped the club to cultivate continuity, develop a strong team ethos, and instil a powerful sense of belonging. It has been a clear recipe for success.

Likewise, Tees’ business strategy has been to nurture the talent already on its books, to draw on the depth of knowledge within its staff, and to commit to offering a tailored, open and honest service to all its clients. In this way it has built a strong local, regional and national reputation for the high-quality and caring nature of its legal and financial services.

Naturally the firm benefits from its relationship with the rugby club in practical ways. It has its name on the shirts, it gets to host clients at matches, it enjoys opportunities to connect face-to-face with local people and businesses, and it can invite its staff to attend matches and get behind their local team. All this helps build their ‘team spirit’ and adds to the visibility of Tees beyond the Silver Leys ground.

In this way, Tees Law and Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club get to support each other, ensuring they can both feel confident about standing tall and proud in the community for many more years to come. GREAT MINDS THINK (AND ACT) ALIKE!

A final word from Tees’ Ashton Hunt: “We were very clear from the beginning that we wanted to build a relationship with the club and the wider ‘family’ involved at Silver Leys, not just be a ‘sleeping sponsor’. I think we’ve demonstrated through our participation and involvement in networking with other sponsors and members, supporting at lunches and on the touchline, how much mutual value can be achieved through our contribution to the ‘One Club’ ethos.

“That enthusiasm to build solid relationships of course extends to working on behalf of individuals and businesses in the local community.”

I am pleased to announce that the Club’s latest investment in its facilities has been completed, with the installation of a new set of floodlights on Pitch 4, which now means that both back pitches are floodlit. Once again, we are indebted to Peter Scarlett who managed to obtain grants to cover the majority of the cost. The Club has always taken the approach that it is vital to keep improving our facilities for the benefit of members if we are to sustain our levels of activity and continue to develop. As such, this has been and will remain a core priority for the Club.

The issue of sustainability of clubs has been a major concern for the RFU within the context of the payment of players, which is seen as taking often scarce resources away from the maintenance and development of facilities. As a result, the RFU established a working group drawn from all levels of the game to assess concerns across the game around the payment of players. They concluded that “excessive payments for playing community rugby are having a detrimental effect on the game”. In summary, their main concerns were: l Clubs with the capacity to pay players disrupted leagues by encouraging players to move from club to club thereby undermining club loyalty. l Clubs are increasingly unable to modernise facilities or invest in the wider development of their members because the payment of players becomes such a drain on scarce resources. l Clubs have an increased exposure to employment legislation and HMRC regulations.

In an attempt to address this situation, the working group has proposed that a set of guidelines be introduced that limits player payments at Levels 3, 4, and 5. As far as we are concerned, playing at Level 4, the guideline is for a total salary cap of £100,000 per annum, which includes actual payments as well as material benefits, as set out by HMRC. The proposed guidelines were passed by the RFU Council on the 2nd December and will now be refined further by the RFU before going back to the Council in April 2017.

The guidelines will come into effect during the season 2019/20. Prior to that season commencing, the President, Chair, Secretary and Treasurer of each club will be expected to sign an annual declaration stating whether or not payments are made to players and at what total level. Clubs can breach the limit if they so decide but will thereby forfeit access to RFU funding such as travel funding and grants/loans. Any false declaration would also mean the loss of access to such funding.

The degree to which such sanctions are able to impact upon excessive payments to players is questionable and a number of people I have spoken to are sceptical that it will deliver any real change, with the danger that the game reverts to the old habits of ‘boot money’. Only time will tell but I can assure you that our priority at Bishop’s Stortford is to invest in all our playing members and the facilities that support their playing of the game! Yours in rugby

Last-minute try snatches a big, bonus point win for Stortford in the closest possible contest. Overall, probably a fair reflection of the balance of play but, supporters of a totally committed home side might be forgiven for seeing things differently.

The first ten minutes of the game were predictably dominated by two strong defences, but saw Stortford steadily gaining the upper hand in terms of possession and territory. This culminated in a penalty to the visitors for a breakdown offence, which Tom Banks converted for a 3 point lead. The next 20 minutes saw Stortford dominate both possession and territory but their efforts to add to their score were repeatedly frustrated by individual mistakes, combined with the continuing strength of the Redingensians’ defence. Eventually, though, after a series of strong forward drives in the home 22 quick hands down the backline produced an overlap, which Will Simonds and Ryan Hutler were able to exploit to allow the latter to score an unconverted try out wide.

Another 5 points were added as Hutler provided Simmonds, who touched down after his winger had made a dash down the outside to find the fullback totally unmarked with an inside pass. From the restart, pressure on Stortford’s clearing kick gave the Rams a lineout on the visitors’ 22 - the nearest they had come in the whole game to the opposition tryline and some powerful drives from their forwards eventually allowed one of thir big backrow forwards running from close quarters on the blindside, where a tackle by Jimmy Rea just failed to prevent the ball being grounded. A top quality conversion from the touchline finished the half

Obviously lifted, the home side came out all guns blazing in the second period. Aided by two errors at lineouts, they had to take some huge tackling until after 11 minutes a 5 metre scrum saw No 8. Robbie Stapley burst off the base, stand up in the tackle and feed a deft back-handed pass inside to his flyhalf, who touched down under the posts. The conversion took the home side into a 1 point lead, but this was short-lived, following a turnover in midfield by Jack Scantlebury which allowed Hutler to benefit from quick handling down the backline to score a try on 13 minutes from another Simmonds pass. Banks this time converted from the touchline.. 6 minutes later Mark McCraith was yellow carded for foul play at a ruck, which provided another turning point as Redingensians went straight down the field from the resultant penalty and, although the score went to their winger, it was. almost inevitably set up once again by their big forwards. Another excellent touchline conversion restored their one point lead.

Stortford were straight back onto the offensive, but were now finding ground much harder to make, Under this pressure the ball was eventually turned over with time running out, the conversion looked as if it might have sealed a battling home victory, but Stortford showed their true mettle in fighting straight back from the restart. A scrum was won, caution was thrown to the wind and quick ball along the line to the right wing found man of the match, Hutler, with the cover defence closing rapidly on him. Showing fantastic composure, well beyond his years, he waited until the last minute, before putting a testing rolling kick in behind from some 10 metres out and, with Simmonds contesting the initial chase to defeat the Rams’ last man, it was left to Nick Hankin to swoop on the loose ball for the bonus point try and a one point lead. Banks’ conversion attempt flew just wide, but it didn’t matter, since there was no time for a restart and the referee immediately blew the final whistle.

To say this was a pulsating match would be a huge understatement, but ultimately, the visitors had just enough of an attacking edge to have deserved a win against Redingensians’ remorseless defence. Mark McCraith

COACHES CORNER

EMOTIONAL COMMITMENT AND MAINTAINING MOMENTUM

Bishop’s Stortford skipper and coach Tom Coleman was unaable to play in Saturdays fixture against Redingensians due to work commitments. Complaining that “twitter” was no way to watch a rugby match he did not hold back on his praise for a much changed team and their last gasp win keeping up their run of winning performances and highlighted with their tremendous victory over league leaders Chinnor.

The next fixture, at home against Exmouth, Tom Coleman has warned that the team needs to be very wary despite the comparative table positions. However, he stressed the need to maintain the momentum. “We take every side very seriously in this league because as we’ve seen on their day any team can beat anyone – especially when you travel away,” said Coleman.

The dangers that a team like Stortford confront are: • Starting slowly in order to weigh-up the opposition – if you’re not very careful you can find yourself behind on points and having to play ‘catch-up’. • Taking your foot off the pedal too early and being caught out at the end. • Petulance and giving away too many penalties and yardage and field position as a consequence

Stortford can play to different ‘Plans’ dependent upon what is needed – Expansive - Tight – Tactical kicking which can be used when you know the opposition.

Coleman praised his side for what he described as one their best performances for a number of seasons after the 30-22 win at Silver Leys against Chinnor. “The emotional side of the game we put in was tremendous and I felt we got the reward that we thoroughly deserved. “I’ve got no doubt if we approach any game like that then we will come away with a very good victory. “We’ve got a few very experienced players in our team and it’s important that those players stay.”But the younger generation players coming through are no mugs either and they’ve already played a lot of rugby.”

The Stortford fly-half also said Jack Scantlebury, who made his first 1st XV start this season against Chinnor, had grabbed the chance to impress with both hands.”Jack certainly put his hand up for a regular start. He did himself no harm with the performance that he put in. “Others who came off the bench like Hugh Michell gave us the energy that we needed in the latter stages.”

Coleman also praised the fans for their support this season.”For the last few seasons we’ve been a very well supported side and it’s been very humbling for the players to be out there and perform for the people who turn up week in, week out,” he said. Impressive selection (just like ours).

Steve Ball Bishop’s Stortford 30 Chinnor 22

Stortford again rise to a big match occasion and produce their best performance of the season to defeat table-topping Chinnor

Stortford came out clearly determined to put last week’s disappointment at Redruth firmly behind them. Chinnor’s coach conceeded that homework had clearly been done and Stortford’s fast and aggressive defence was critical in stemming the flow of quick ball, on which their high-scoring game had been based.

The first 10 minutes set the tone, as the home side made tackle after tackle in their own 22 to prevent the visitors crossing the try line. Building on defence, the home team working their way up the pitch were rewarded with the first points of the game through a penalty from Tom Banks. The game continued at a high pace, and it was Stortford that again. with an excellent try from Dan Elsom, beating the last 2 defenders to touch down. The score was created by Jack Scantlebury, clearly reveling in his first game for the 1st XV for some time. Having made a tremendous half-break and offload to find his openside in close support. Tom Banks conversion, gave his team a 10 point lead.

Chinnor swept straight back onto the attack and a tremendous pickup by flyhalf, Bertie Hopkin set up a try for Alex Waddingham on 30 minutes. It was Stortford that ended the half on the front foot, with Banks kicking Stortford into an 8 point lead at the break

Stortford again started strongly, but by kicking away possession, the visitors were quick to exploit with strong counterattacks. Stortford found themselves having to defend wave after wave of assaults on their line and used the pressure a quick ball to Hopkin saw the flyhalf dance over for a converted try after 9 minutes.

Just a one point deficit now and this was quickly turned into a 4 point Chinnor lead when, almost straight from the restart, they launched a sweeping attack, taking advantage of the first chinks in the hitherto solid Stortford tackling for winger, Callum Wilson to touch down after a clever chip and chase.

Signs of defensive tiring quickly disappeared, when Jimmy Rea followed up a pinpoint grubber kick from Tom Coleman to touch down in the corner for an unconverted try. With renewed energy the home side were again in the ascendency and it was replacement back row, Hugh Michell who made his mark after 65 minutes by touching down for the third try, having given close support to his scrumhalf and following a turnover in the Chinnor.

5 minutes later, Matt Tomlinson plunged over for the bonus point try after some more tremendous 15-man attacking pressure, in which Nick Hankin, Rea and Michell were prominent. With only 10 minutes to go, this effectively sealed the victory, but there was no let-up in the tempo of the game and Chinnor took advantage of a misplaced defensive kick from Stortford to launch a scything counterattack, ending in a try near the touchline for Tom Price.

This is a very strong Chinnor side and it took a fantastic team effort from Stortford, showing colossal heart and spirit in executing a well-conceived game plan to carry the day. A memorable match for the many home supporters

Offer valid until 18th of December 2016.Terms and conditions apply. YOUR TREASURER NEEDS YOU

We talk a lot about a “One Club Ethos” and yet here we are with THREE Clubs within BSRFC ;- The 100 Club, The Oval Club and Club Stortford.

Each exists for the same purpose – raising additional funds, but each has their own priorities. The 100 Club has been around the longest where the member donates on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis to be entered into a monthly draw of £100 and an annual draw of £1,000.

The Oval Club and Club Stortford are introduced below and you will note how each have their own priotities when it comes to supporting areas within the Club.

Which are you a member of ? Apart from helping with Club Finances the Oval Club and Club Stortford provide a social environment for meeting like minded people and fulfilling the one purpose - BSRFC CLUB STORTFORD Now in its fourth season, Club Stortford was set up by a small working party, to support the 1stXV squad after promotion to National League Rugby in 2013/14. Our aim is “to ensure Bishop’s Stortford RFC has a sustainable future in National League Rugby and continues to nurture home grown talent.”

Working in conjunction with the 1stXV coaching team, CS provides funding for various expenditure beyond the financial resources of the main club. These are specific to the first team squad, and include items such as strength and conditioning, video analysis of matches, equipment, travel and overnight stays for long distance away fixtures.

Director of Rugby, Andy Long, has reiterated on a number of occasions the importance he attaches to the financial support given by Club Stortford. Quite simply, without it’s support, the team would not be able to perform at such currently high levels. Two third place finishes, together with a second place play off in the last three seasons is an outstanding achievement. Club Stortford currently has 30 likeminded members, all willing to provide the necessary funds to allow the club to continue to play at the current level. These are either individual, corporate or syndicate members, enjoying various benefits associated with their membership.

We continue to look for new members, to allow us to broaden and deepen the extent of our support. We would urge you to consider joining Club Stortford. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact our secretary, Russell Cattell 07778 101988, or our chairman Neil Parker 07860 300080.

THE OVAL CLUB

In 1998 some Rugby Club members got together to try to find a way of raising funds to help the Club. Several schemes were discussed but ultimately The Oval Club was founded with the aim ‘To contribute towards promoting the highest possible standard of rugby throughout Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club’. A committee of five was formed and it was decided that The Oval Club should be autonomous and entirely independent of the Rugby Club’s financial and administrative operations. It communicates with the Rugby Club through one person who channels all requests for financial assistance to The Oval Club with the full knowledge of the Rugby Club’s Executive Committee.

From The Oval Club’s fund two thirds of the income are donated to specific projects that the Rugby Club wants to undertake and the other third is reserved for a members’ fund to provide social occasions as a means of payback. A principle that The Oval Club has always stood by is that it will endeavour to provide funds for one-off projects and not regular requirements that should be undertaken through the budget of the Rugby Club. It has been instrumental in providing funds to start projects such as the drainage and floodlighting of the back pitches, improvement and maintenance of all playing surfaces, supporting Youth and Mini through, tours, kit and additional playing facilities and refurbishing changing room showers. Without this starter outside funding would not have been forthcoming. The Oval Club has raised over £204,000 of which the Rugby Club has received in excess of £130,000 for its projects. On the social side of The Oval Club members have enjoyed several events each year provided by their fund.

The membership has remained around 70 and any would-be members are invited to join by contacting John Robinson, the Secretary.

It can be seen that The Oval Club has played a considerable part in providing much needed funds for the Rugby Club to provide facilities to help it enhance its reputation within the rugby community at large and possibly without these funds the Rugby Club would have been poorly placed to achieve the results and standards it seeks.

ROUND & ABOUT THE CLUB FOCUS ON THE COLTS

Bishop’s Stortford Colts travelled to Colchester for the 3rd round of the National Cup recently, to face a side who have had a number of players representing Eastern Counties in the latest round of county matches. Playing into the wind in the first half, BS spent much of the opening 20 minutes in their own ’22, but the defence was excellent and was able to deny Colchester any clear chances. Against the run of play, but created by some excellent handling close to our own line, wing Sam Tatchell was given a few yards of space and that was enough for him to use his pace to sprint 80 yards and score under the posts. The latter stages of the first half followed a similar pattern, but one interception and another good passing move saw Ronan Willis score two more tries. The excellent Dom Lilley converted all 3.

Bishop’s Stortford maintained the excellent defence throughout the second half, and managed to score 3 more tries to finish comfortable winners, 39-5, with all of the 7 replacements also making a strong contribution.

************************************************************************************

With a number of players returning from injuries and school commitments, selection for the next game will be difficult, but from a position of considerable strength. The National Colts Cup 4th round draw has given us a game against Old Rutlishians, a team with a number of academy players from London irish and Harlequins, so it is likely to be a tough encounter. The game will be played on Sunday 18th December, 1pm Kick-Off at Silver Leys. All support would be appreciated.

************************************************************************************

The Colts side had 6 players involved in the recent county trials, and we are delighted to say that Dom Lilley has made it through to the London & South-East squad for the next round of regional matches. Good luck Dom.

************************************************************************************

The under 17A team has also continued its winning start to the league campaign with a 40-5 win against London Welsh. Bishop’s Stortford will also be representing Hertfordshire in the National U17 Cup which starts next March. BISHOP’S STORTFORD RFC FUNCTION ROOM HIRE
