01279 757 333 proco.com PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Well that two week break soon flew by! Seasonal felicitations to you all & welcome back to Silver Leys for our first game of the New Year, one which holds great promise for our club. Welcome also to the players, officials and supporters of todays opponents Cinderford RFC.

‘2016’ has received a lot of bad press but it was pretty good to us! Bonus point victories in our last four games whilst others surprisingly dropped points, meant we finished the year on top of the heap, which was an unexpected and very pleasant early Christmas present.

Last time out here we overcame a spirited Exmouth team 38-7. They certainly didn’t play like they were bottom of the table, which illustrates the competitive nature of this league. In the pre-Christmas game at Bury St Edmunds, our large and vociferous band of travelling supporters helped negate any benefit the side may have expected by being at home. Ultimately though games are won and lost on the pitch and once again our guys produced a polished performance to run out comfortable 33-16 winners.

So we’re top of the league. The $64,000 question is of course can we stay there? We really shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves though. It may be a cliché but I’m sure the players are just taking it ‘one game at a time’. We’re only just into the 2nd half of the season and we have some very tough games ahead of us, but I can’t deny the satisfaction gained from occupying our highest ever league placing.

We are though not the only team here today experiencing a rich vein of form. Cinderford have only lost one of their last six games and that was by the closest of margins away at Elthamians. Indeed that day they outscored their hosts in terms of tries, only to be pipped to the victory in the final few minutes. So be warned we’re likely to witness another close fought encounter this afternoon. Almost every game in National Two South seems to be keenly contested. Great for the neutral observer. Less so for the partisan.

Before the break our Colts sneaked home 20-15 against Old Rutlishians in the 4th round of the National Colts Cup and have been ‘rewarded’ with a trip to our friends at Chinnor on 5th March & our Returning Students beat hosts OA’s twice on the way to winning the annual Herts Festival. Congratulations to both squads.

Thank you to all those that supported our recent fundraising efforts in aid of our Presidents Charity – Ellies fund. The auction sale of two paintings & four Saracens tickets, along with a raffle, the sale of Mulled cider & a donation from the organisers of the Mini & Youth parents Christmas party, meant that we were able to donate another thousand pounds to help Ellie get the most out of life.

Finally one of our Minis Dad’s Greg Coates aka Spiderman sustained a nasty break to his knee cap whilst participating in the Coaches vs Parents Fancy Dress match the weekend before Christmas. After undergoing an Op to put a few bits back together, he is now braving an extended period of R&R. We of course all wish him well in his recovery and hope he’s soon up and running around on all 8 of his legs.

Elms The Ultimate Stansted Driving Machine D.O.R SAYS Having two weeks off means you have to balance things, the guys have had some time off but we had them in for a few sessions as well.

It is about ticking over, but the guys are raring to get back into the swing of it and focussing on what we need to do before the next break in seven weeks or so.

Cinderford may be disappointed with how they started, but they have found their feet and from the footage I have seen they have pushed teams close.

They are going to be well up for it and to avenge the defeat from earlier in the season. We will have to be at our best again, but it is a big weekend for the league. Chinnor go down to and at Clifton, we know that if we put a good performance together it could be an opportunity for us.

We were going well and then you get two weeks off, so it is about how you react. This week’s training has been really focussed and we are just looking to get the momentum going. We feel we have been playing well and have multiple threats in attack. We have just got to go out there and put it into place against Cinderford. ACTION FROM THE GAME EARLIER THIS SEASON.

Cinderford RFC was formed in 1886 and was soon playing many leading clubs in and Wales. The club’s fortunes and that of the local mining community were closely linked and both declined during the inter-war years with a number of local rugby heroes ‘going north’ to seek their fortunes in what is now ‘The Rugby League’. Cinderford RFC re-emerged after the Second World War and regained its Dockham Road home in 1956. Fifty years of hard work and the foresight of a few individuals have furnished the club with a splendid ground that is the envy of many . Cinderford is also running a newly-formed Colts side that will play in the highly competitive Gwent District League at Under-19s level, as well as entering the Gwent District Cup, and RFU National Cup colt competitions. A successful mini and junior section provides rugby for youngsters from U7 ‘s to U17’s. There are two women’s teams who play on Sunday afternoons

Last season Cinderford were relegated from National 1 and currently lie mid table in 8th place with seven losses in comparison with Bishop’s Stortford’s three. Cinderford did however beat in a tight game whereas Bishop’s Stortford had just lost in a high scoring contest.. In the run up to the Christmas break they have had comfortable wins against Barnstaple and Clifton and missed out by just 1 point against Old Elthamians. A close encounter seems likely and with Bishop’s Stortford being the target for every club in the league.

WestburyGR_BishopsStortford_A5_160725.indd 1 25/07/2016 12:14 THE CHANGING ROLE OF 1ST XV CAPTAIN NOW AND THEN – THE CATALYST OF CHANGE. HOW THE INTRODUCTION OF LEAGUE STRUCTURES HAVE IMPACTED ON THE ROLE OF 1ST XV CAPTAINS

At the end of this season 2016/17 Bishop’s Stortford skipper, Tom Coleman. will have been the longest serving skipper in continuous post (6 seasons) and succeeding Paul Woodford’s 5 seasons although his tenure was over an 8 year period he had “time off” in 1995/96, 1997/98 and 1998/99. Tom is particularly proud of this achievement but is it such experience that is also of significance in rationalising just what the Club has and is continuing to achieve both on and off the field ?

This postulation will be argued over the course of the next two or three home match programmes, looking at some of the theories of leadership; how some of the responsibilities have been taken on by others, how the use of technology is changing both analysis of the opposition and player performance. Somewhere alongside of these issues are the personal priorities that each skipper wants to add.

In talking to the Club “wrinklies” it is widely recognised that C.N.C. (Charlie) Abrams was probably the first to bring structure and organisation to the Club . His training and preparation programme were uncompromising! Most Saturday fixtures were played on a nominally “Friendly” basis. Charlie was skipper in 1971/72 when Bishop’s Stortford achieved the double of Hertfordshire President’s Cup and the Herts 7 a-side. But the results achieved in these competitions also led to improving fixture lists the following season.

So five years later in comes Mike (Sid) Sidey as Bishop’s Stortford skipper. The “Winds of change” in this context refers not to the prevailing South Westerly at Silver Leys nor to any more questionable meaning, but to the changes planned and happening throughout . Bishop’s Stortford had qualified for by a fraction ahead of what were Barnet. Now the Club needed to take into account the future relevance for such things as the advent of Merit Tables, Leagues requiring a national structure, progression through defined levels with promotion and relegation outcomes. THE CHANGING ROLE OF 1ST XV CAPTAIN NOW AND THEN – THE CATALYST OF CHANGE. HOW THE INTRODUCTION OF LEAGUE STRUCTURES HAVE IMPACTED ON THE ROLE OF 1ST XV CAPTAINS

When Sid Sidey became Captain, he was voted follow a procedure laid down by their predecessor in at the AGM, and even with 4 seasons and 2 but will want to bring their own ideas into the intervening Captains since Charlie Abrams, Sid saw role. Even though we often hear about ‘going back his responsibilities as building on what had been to basics’ it is always with the benefit of what had previously achieved. “If you wanted something else worked and what hadn’t. to happen – you either had to do it yourself or get someone you could rely upon.” The Gym at What was it that Sid wanted to bring as his Bishop’s Stortford College (Ken Day – fitness), Ball contribution to the role – “Basically what we had at work (Keith Coakham) Forward play (Bob Green) the time was the beginning of a competitive league and long runs comprised “Training”. This was then structure so we were going to need to build a squad followed by selection meetings which were attended which meant identifying talented players earlier and by all team skippers. But the duties did not stop encouraging them by promoting them through the there, Captains collected subs, dirty shirts needed sides and at the same time developing their loyalty to be laundered and ensured clean shirts were to the game and the Club. available for the following week, balls available, flags set out, even cleaning the changing rooms or doing Tom Coleman sees his role as less ground breaking washing up depending which duty the team had but much more political. Bishop’s Players and Clubs are much more ambitious and Stortford won the Hertfordshire Presidents Cup in supporters looking for entertainment and wanting 1979 under his leadership. to support a winning side. But more of Tom’s views in the next edition as we also look at some of the A steady progression but punctuated by long theories on leadership . periods of consolidation, the Club has worked their way up to – Level 4 which at the start of 2017 puts the Club in 42 place in England.

The changes brought in on the “Winds of Change” has led to a more “professional” approach to the ambitions of all Clubs and their approach to preparation and analysis. Captains are appointed not just on the basis of their popularity, their personal skills or even that they always buy the first jug of beer but on a much more complex set of attributes which we can start to define as LEADERSHIP.

More people have become involved in planning, organisation and reporting so the role of leadership has changed over near 40 years from Sid Sidey to

Tom Coleman. Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and a successful 2017! I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Cinderford, who are our opponents today and for whom, unless I am mistaken, this is their first visit to Silver Leys.

As we reach the halfway point in the season, I am extremely happy and proud to be able to report that the Club finds itself in an extraordinarily healthy position. From the playing perspective, the 1st XV go into 2017 as League leaders, although we know the added pressure that this will bring, and the Blues are sitting fourth in their league, which is beyond all our initial expectations, having played some great rugby in the first half of the season. This demonstrates the current depth we have in our senior playing squad, with competition for places extremely strong. Congratulations have to go to both the players and coaches for all the hard work that has gone into making this possible.

This level of success has had a knock on effect further down the Club, allowing us to field strong sides through the Mitres, currently second in their merit table, the Chindits who are also second in their merit table and the Abbotts who currently lead their merit table. This means we are able to field five senior men’s sides every week. The downside, however, is that we do struggle to find sufficient fixtures, to provide regular games, for the lower sides especially. The Colts are through to the last 16 of the National Cup and the Youth and Mini sections are both as vibrant as ever and under constant pressure in terms of numbers.

Finally, the newly formed Ladies’ section has a regular core of players attending Tuesday training sessions. As a Club, we have just been awarded by the RFU a ladies’ ‘Pitch up and Play’ event, to be held on the evening of the 24th January, which is one of only 30 such events taking place throughout England! I am hopeful that they will be in a position to play their first competitive match towards the end of the season.

In terms of facilities and infrastructure, we have just completed the installation of additional floodlights on Pitch 4, so we now have both back pitches capable of sustaining matches and training. Many thanks must go to the Oval Club, who supported the project with a substantial grant. Early progress is now also being made on the next major project, to provide additional changing accommodation that is capable of supporting the high level of activity that takes place almost every week throughout the season.

None of this would be possible without the huge amount of voluntary work and effort that is put in continually by a whole host of Club members, for which I would like to express my thanks and appreciation. Long may it continue!

Rugby in Hertfordshire appears to be in the rudest of health with so many of the Counties Clubs faring well in their respective Leagues. Old Albanians lying mid table in National One, Bishop’s Stortford RFC start 2017 sitting on top of National League 2 South with the Blues lying fourth in Zoo League One in their first season following promotion. Hertford are closing in on the top three in National League 3 London & SE, top , with many of the other Clubs performing well in their respective leaagues.

This second half of the season warms up with the majority of Representative County competitions from Under 16 Boys, U20’s (Stags), Women’s County Championship and The Bill Beaumont Cup for the Senior County XV.

In the latter Hertfordshire play both and away with at Hertford RFC on Saturday 13th May. Last season Bishop’s Stortford were the major contributor to this squad however with our current league position there could be a clash of dates again for playoffs, 36 Stortford players have represented Herts RFU at the senior level in the past.

The only Stags home fixture this year against Kent on Sunday 19th March KO 2.00pm will be at Silver Leys.

To be eligible for County selection one has to either been born in the county, resided there or played for a Hertfordshire Club for at least a year, no players who have played at Level 2 during this current season and above are eligible. A team of selectors will be watching a number of players from the major clubs in the County – Bishop’s Stortford , Old Albanians, Hertford, Tring and . In addition some eligible players from other clubs/ universities outside the county will be monitored. This is a great opportunity for the selected players to play with others rather than just with their own peers and as happened last season a number of Hertordshire 1st XV from Bishop’s Stortford went on to represent England Counties XV on tour in Canada i.e. Sam Winter and Tom Banks.

As the Club sets out to build a womens section just a brief note on the Women’s game in England that has seen a phenomenal growth recently.

Did you know that... l More than 18,000 women and girls play rugby regularly in England l England Women won the in 2014 after beating Canada 21-9 in Paris. l The victory followed a record-breaking seventh consecutive 6 Nations crown in 2012 as well as the Grand Slam. l They also became the first team ever in 6 Nations history not to concede a try.

In Hertfordshire, the rugby offer for women and girls is broadening for participation and competitive players alike. The combined efforts of Hertfordshire Rugby and the RFU has resulted in a better quality pathway for players regardless of age, ability or why they have chosen to play. This inclusive environment is in it’s strongest position ever and is fast becoming recognised as one of the most productive for players wishing to access the performance level of rugby. Currently Hertfordshire has produced a large number of regional representatives with a majority of these making the step up moving onto higher honours with England representative teams and in a few cases gaining full international caps.

There is tremendous back up for this growing section through the RFU. More information can be found at : http:// www.englandrugby.com/my-rugby/players/womens-rugby/ It is intended that a future edition of the match programme will have an update on Womens rugby at Bishop’s Stortford. The Club would like to extend their sincere thanks and wish good luck to the Hertfordshire RDO (Rugby Development Officer) Mel Liley, who has changed direction and just started a teaching career. She will be working in and is planning to carry on her involvement in rugby by continuing to be a member of Herts Referee Society. We thank her sincerely for her dedication to the game in the County and wish her well. The task of finding her successor has already started in earnest.

Contribution from Colin Haslam who has been involved as a member of The HRFU Executive Committee for the last 14 years serving as County President 2010-12. Most recently as Chairman of Marketing he thinks the position needs new blood. He will stay on his committee throughout the transition, and will continue to be one of the BSRFC representatives for Hertfordshire Rugby.

Colin also is on the Herts Disciplinary Committee – he says : “ I do hope not to see any of my club members appearing in front of the panel!!.”

As a final thought on “County Matters” - If you didn’t know we in Hertfordshire Rugby are delighted and honoured this season as The President of The RFU, Peter Baines was a founder member of RFC and visits Silver Leys often including October 29th this season for the match against Taunton.

Stortford to spend Christmas and New Year in their highest ever league position, atop National 2 South, after a convincing win at Bury St Edmunds.

Stortford started strongly and early pressure produced a penalty under the posts for a breakdown offence, which Tom Banks converted for a 3 point lead after 4 minutes. It took only 6 minutes for the scores to be leveled, when the home side took full advantage of a brief counter-attack to win a penalty under the Stortford posts for failing to release at the tackle. Within 2 minutes, though, Stortford had stretched out to a 7 point lead, when a scrum was won straight from the restart and Sam Winter ran a great line to take a short pass from Tom Coleman to burst through the first line of defence and then round the fullback to touch down close to the posts, giving Banks an easy conversion. Another penalty goal to the scrumhalf 4 minutes later stretched the lead to ten points, but this was cancelled out after 29 minutes, when Stortford were penalised for a breakdown offence under their own posts. It took only 2 minutes, though for Stortford to score their second try, when Will Simmonds touched down after Nick Hankin had made a tremendous break through midfield and then offloaded cleverly to Banks, who could almost certainly have scored himself but, unselfishly put his fullback clear. The conversion attempt flew wide, but Banks was more successful 6 minutes later, when he converted a penalty, after Bury had been penalised for holding on, as they tried to run the ball out of defence. 6-21 at halftime

Having controlled much of the first half, Stortford were noticeably less clinical at the start of the second period and, having won the ball from the restart almost immediately coughed the ball up and, within 2 minutes of the restart had conceded 3 points after they were deemed to have gone offside at a ruck under their own posts. They were guilty on a number of other occasions of trying to force openings too quickly but, despite conceding a number of turnovers as a result, still managed to score the next try after 17 minutes. This was scored by replacement fullback, Pier Dotta, who was on the end of quick hands down the backline, after the forwards had driven a lineout maul some 20 yards, allowing him to dummy a pass to Jimmy Rea on the wing, before crashing through the last tackler close to the touchline. Banks’s great conversion took his side out to a 19 point lead. The scrumhalf turned try scorer some 6 minutes later., when he drove over from the base of a ruck, after another tremendous drive by his pack had been held up just short of the line. His conversion attempt went just wide to leave the scoreline at 9-33. Bury, who had continued to battle hard in what was now, clearly a losing cause were rewarded 4 minutes later with a try of their own, when they kicked to touch a penalty for offside shortly after the restart and set up a driving maul from the lineout, which the visitors were unable to halt. The successful conversion took the score to 16-33, but Stortford were able to see the remaining 12 minutes out reasonably comfortably.

Afterwards, Coach, Andy Long was pleased with the way that his team had executed the game plan and clearly delighted that Henley’s draw at Chinnor had taken us clear at the top of the league. Sam Winter

Marcus is a level 2 qualified coach who has a multi purpose role on the coaching team at the Club. His previous role as Schools Liaison for the RFU firstly covering the schools in Hertfordshire then in Essex together with the youngsters summer camps made him an ideal candidate for a coaching role with the Mini and Youth sections of the Club.

As also a recent member of the 1st XV until an injury had forced him into an early retirement also gave him the experience of what was happening with coaching policies and practices right at the sharp end.

Bishop’s Stortford is and has now for some while, prided itself on the number of 1st XV players to have come through the Mini and Youth structure. This does not come about by accident and a lot of hard work goes into ensuring a continuing involvement. Senior players having played on the Saturday then turn out on a Sunday morning to help with the skill sessions with the youngsters.

The Match Day Experience programme also brings the youngsters into contact with 1st XV players. 12 Mini’s attend on Home Match days to experience what it is like preparing for a league game at this level. Tour around the preparation, Meet the players, Q and A sessions, warm up and skill activities usually with players not available for selection through injury.

The next piece of the jigsaw is Coaching the Coaches. Have a look at the Coaches Welcome Pack that all new, and remember volunteer coaches, receive when they first join, and you will start to get a flavour of what is involved. In addition Mini and Youth Coaches are invited to attend senior sessions. New ideas on running training and coaching sessions can then be taken back to their groups making the sessions more interesting and enjoyable.

What you now have are the Coaches and the Mini and Youth players getting the same messages with a consistency of approach, using the same language and terminology that the senior squads use. So as the Mini develop into Youth and Youth into Senior they are familiar with the Bishop’s Stortford style. Just one example of the One Club Ethos in action.

Marcus also does skills coaching and helps with the Backs and Attack. His ambition also are rooted in the game and its development. “ The role is about making coaching more interesting by keeping the youngsters motivated ” he said. “ Just look at the numbers here on a Sunday and those that come to support. Yes there are drop outs from first registration but most age groups now have to keep waiting lists and are able to top up their numbers. Job satisfaction comes from 1) Things that work well; 2) Seeing the players develop; 3) Always knowing that it could be even better ” Marcus also had words of praise for Director of Rugby Andy Long who gives the opportunities for those learning the craft to develop ideas. Impressive selection (just like ours).

Steve Ball Bishop’s Stortford 38 Exmouth 7 By John Allanson

Stortford patience pays off and eventually produces clear win against a determined Exmouth team, that made life difficult for 45 minutes.

Murky and damp conditions seemed to set the early tone, as both sides struggled to retain possession for any length of time. Stortford tended to have the edge, though and this finally told after 13 minutes, when Matt Tomlinson forced his way over for a try after a powerful Mark McCraith drive from a 5 metre lineout had been stopped just short. Tom Banks converted, as he did again 10 minutes later, after a brilliant individual try from Nick Hankin. The winger had ruthlessly exploited a mismatch against an Exmouth forward to breach the first line of defence, but still had to fend off a covering back, before stepping his way through the last two defenders to touch down under the posts.

The game then became scrappy again, with mistakes from both sides preventing any serious scoring threats, as both sides contested the breakdowns strongly, when not in possession. The visitors refused to give up and took full advantage of a poor defensive kick to advance into the Stortford 22 after half an hour had gone and some good ball retention through multiple phases through their big forwards allowed them to exert real pressure on the home line. This culminated in a strong Exmouth scrum underneath the posts, from which No 8. Mike Richards powered his way over for a converted try. Stortford were unable to counter before halftime, leaving the score at the break a far from comfortable 14-7.

As conditions worsened in the second half, with the rain now falling steadily, Stortford somehow managed to cut down their error rate and solid defence forced a number of mistakes from the visitors, which were exploited ruthlessly to transform the game. Six minutes in and in-form winger, Ryan Hutler burst onto a poor Exmouth kick from defence and almost instantly chipped over the chasers to catch the whole defence flat-footed and a kind bounce allowed him to regather in a trice and beat the cover to touch down in the corner. Banks was unable to convert, but was on target 10 minutes later, when Hutler scored his second try after fly-hacking ahead from close to halfway a loose ball in Exmouth’s midfield and picking up to go in under the posts and register the bonus point for his team.

The battling visitors now seemed to start to wilt under the 19 point deficit and the next try took only 5 minutes to come, as Stortford put together the best spell of rugby of the game, going through many phases in the difficult conditions to set Sam Winter clear under the posts. The centre was clearly relishing his first game for 8 weeks and made a tremendous outside break after 72 minutes to commit the last defender and put Will Simmonds in for an unconverted try out wide. Despite one great burst from replacement scrumhalf, Sam Colemen from a turnover inside his own 22, which was thwarted only by a cover tackle right on the Exmouth line, the visitors managed to hold out until the final whistle for a final scoreline of 38-7.

Offer valid until 18th of December 2016.Terms and conditions apply. YOUR TREASURER NEEDS YOU

We talk a lot about a “One Club Ethos” and yet here we are with THREE Clubs within BSRFC ;- The 100 Club, The Oval Club and Club Stortford.

Each exists for the same purpose – raising additional funds, but each has their own priorities. The 100 Club has been around the longest where the member donates on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis to be entered into a monthly draw of £100 and an annual draw of £1,000.

The Oval Club and Club Stortford are introduced below and you will note how each have their own priotities when it comes to supporting areas within the Club.

Which are you a member of ? Apart from helping with Club Finances the Oval Club and Club Stortford provide a social environment for meeting like minded people and fulfilling the one purpose - BSRFC CLUB STORTFORD Now in its fourth season, Club Stortford was set up by a small working party, to support the 1stXV squad after promotion to National League Rugby in 2013/14. Our aim is “to ensure Bishop’s Stortford RFC has a sustainable future in National League Rugby and continues to nurture home grown talent.”

Working in conjunction with the 1stXV coaching team, CS provides funding for various expenditure beyond the financial resources of the main club. These are specific to the first team squad, and include items such as strength and conditioning, video analysis of matches, equipment, travel and overnight stays for long distance away fixtures.

Director of Rugby, Andy Long, has reiterated on a number of occasions the importance he attaches to the financial support given by Club Stortford. Quite simply, without it’s support, the team would not be able to perform at such currently high levels. Two third place finishes, together with a second place play off in the last three seasons is an outstanding achievement. Club Stortford currently has 30 likeminded members, all willing to provide the necessary funds to allow the club to continue to play at the current level. These are either individual, corporate or syndicate members, enjoying various benefits associated with their membership.

We continue to look for new members, to allow us to broaden and deepen the extent of our support. We would urge you to consider joining Club Stortford. If you are interested and would like further information, please contact our secretary, Russell Cattell 07778 101988, or our chairman Neil Parker 07860 300080.

THE OVAL CLUB

In 1998 some Rugby Club members got together to try to find a way of raising funds to help the Club. Several schemes were discussed but ultimately The Oval Club was founded with the aim ‘To contribute towards promoting the highest possible standard of rugby throughout Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club’. A committee of five was formed and it was decided that The Oval Club should be autonomous and entirely independent of the Rugby Club’s financial and administrative operations. It communicates with the Rugby Club through one person who channels all requests for financial assistance to The Oval Club with the full knowledge of the Rugby Club’s Executive Committee.

From The Oval Club’s fund two thirds of the income are donated to specific projects that the Rugby Club wants to undertake and the other third is reserved for a members’ fund to provide social occasions as a means of payback. A principle that The Oval Club has always stood by is that it will endeavour to provide funds for one-off projects and not regular requirements that should be undertaken through the budget of the Rugby Club. It has been instrumental in providing funds to start projects such as the drainage and floodlighting of the back pitches, improvement and maintenance of all playing surfaces, supporting Youth and Mini through, tours, kit and additional playing facilities and refurbishing changing room showers. Without this starter outside funding would not have been forthcoming. The Oval Club has raised over £204,000 of which the Rugby Club has received in excess of £130,000 for its projects. On the social side of The Oval Club members have enjoyed several events each year provided by their fund.

The membership has remained around 70 and any would-be members are invited to join by contacting John Robinson, the Secretary.

It can be seen that The Oval Club has played a considerable part in providing much needed funds for the Rugby Club to provide facilities to help it enhance its reputation within the rugby community at large and possibly without these funds the Rugby Club would have been poorly placed to achieve the results and standards it seeks.

ROUND & ABOUT THE CLUB BISHOP’S STORTFORD COLTS PROGRESS

National Cup, 4th round. - BS Colts 20 Old Rutlishians 15 Bishop’s Stortford started the game without a number of first choice players due to illness or injury, and were against a big and powerful Old Ruts side that has a number of academy players from both Harlequins and London Irish, so this was always going to be a tough battle.

Stortford started the game well, with some strong carries from the forwards generally making good ground. The defence was very impressive, with everyone committed to the cause, but George Keen in the centre made some very strong hits and was outstanding. Points were hard to come by until a loose pass from Old Rut’s was intercepted by wing Sam Tatchell, who again showed his excellent pace to run from halfway and beat the last 2 defenders and score under the posts.

Stortford scored 2 more tries and a penalty to move 20-0 ahead at half time. Early in the second-half as a number of players started to tire, so tackles were missed and Old Ruts began to make good ground through their big forwards. They scored 3 tries, the last with just a few minutes remaining but having failed to convert any of them still needed to score one more to win the game. Stortford were able to kick to the corner and keep the game tight in those last few minutes, with Stan Guy-Walters doing a great job as a stand-in fly half, managing the game well and tackling aggressively.

BS have been drawn away to Chinnor in the 5th round on 5th March. The New Year will also see the Colts compete in the LV Cup, starting with a game against Hitchin on 8 January. The U17’s start their own National Cup competition in February and the A’s remain unbeaten in the league.

MYSTERY SANTA PRODUCES ANOTHER MYSTERY!

Only one table correctly identified all of the Mystery Santas and a bottle of wine goes to Membership Secretary Jo Dunkley and friends.

The mystery concerns one particular father who correctly identified 14 of the 16 Santas. Of the two that were incorrect – one was his son ! Guess who ?
