The present work is dedicated to a unique phenomenon which is the first secular school for Muslim girls in the Islamic world. Established in 1901 in Baku by a self-made oil baron Hajji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, the school proved to be a vivid example of transforming the black gold of oil into the human gold of an educated woman. The very idea of the school was viewed by its benefactor as the only way "to bring to a Muslim woman a comprehension of her inalienable human rights". What makes the whole idea all the more fascinating is that this occurred more than half a century prior to the foundation of the UN and adoption of the international legal instruments of human rights. No surprise the Taghiyev school for girls became an alma mater to the whole cohort of outstanding Azerbaijani educators and mothers of educated children. These women were capable of transmiting Taghiyev's ideas of enlightenment. It is these ideas that will be of key importance for ensuring sustain- able development and a civilized future for today’s independent Azerbaijan. Îñíîâàííàÿ â 1901 ãîäó â Áàêó âèäíûì íåôòåïðîìûøëåííèêîì Ãàäæè Çåéíàëàáäèíîì Òàãèåâûì, øêîëà ñòàëà íàãëÿäíûì ïðèìåðîì òðàíñôîðìàöèè ÷åðíîãî çîëîòà íåôòÿíûõ êàïèòàëîâ â çîëîòî ÷åëîâå÷åñêîãî, è ÷òî åùå áîëåå âàæíî - ìàòåðèíñêîãî êàïèòàëà. Îòêðûòèå øêîëû âèäåëîñü åå îñíîâàòåëåì êàê åäèíñòâåííûé ñïîñîá "ïðèâåäåíèÿ ìóñóëüìàíîê ê îñîçíàíèþ ñâîèõ íåîòúåìëåìûõ ÷åëîâå÷åñêèõ ïðàâ", è ýòî çà äîáðûõ ïîëâåêà äî îñíîâàíèÿ ÎÎÍ è ïðèíÿòèÿ îñíîâîïîëàãàþùèõ ìåæäóíàðîäíûõ äîêóìåíòîâ ïî ïðàâàì ÷åëîâåêà. Îòíþäü íå ñëó÷àéíî, ÷òî èìåííî èç ñòåí øêîëû Òàãèåâà âûøëà öåëàÿ êîãîðòà çàìå÷àòåëüíûõ àçåðáàéäæàíñêèõ ïðîñâåòèòåëüíèö, ïåäàãîãîâ è ìàòåðåé âûäàþùèõñÿ ëè÷íîñòåé, ñóìåâøèõ äîñòîéíî ïðîäîëæèòü òàãèåâñêèå èäåè ïðîñâåùåíèÿ. First and foremost enormous thanks are due to the blessed memories of Sarah Taghiyeva and Safia Abdullayeva, the daughter and graddaughter of H.Z.Taghiyev, who, despite the fact that the very name of her father, the founder of the first secular school for Muslim girls, was tabooed in the Soviet time, managed to get recollections of the school's graduates while they were available.     I. Introduction This master‟s thesis represents study of female newspaper and magazine editors in Azerbaijan based on Western and Soviet definitions of journalism with explanation of local national features of this profession. The idea of conducting such research came right after completion of the 2008 research where we examined male editors-in-chief, deputy managing editors and department editors. Those journalism practitioners represented three age generations of Azerbaijani journalism: the old-school Soviet practitioners drilled to adhere party discipline; the war and crisis generation that experienced crash course in capitalism and learned to survive by all means and the youngest generation that came after economical stabilization of Azerbaijan after the year 2000. However, the 2008 inquiry left an aftertaste of incompleteness since the research did not involve even a single female editor. The reason of course was, that women (with one exception1) editors were not represented in that research since none of them were employed in the largest nationwide newspapers that were part of the research sample. Having in mind argumentation of Linda Steiner (Steiner, 1997) on masculine bias inside of journalistic community the 2008 research levitated reasonable questions: are there no female editors in Azerbaijan and if they really exist what is their position in the typological frame derived from the research of Azerbaijani male editors. Logically, the 2012 research had to take a similar approach to the inquiry, resulting in almost identical conceptualization and question apparatus, with the gender aspect being the key modification to the scheme. Despite the attention that the gender problematic received starting the 1990s, surprisingly there were only two attempts to explore female segment of mass media in Azerbaijan.

He had definite views that the future of the nation lay in education. All the Azerbaijani neftkhuda, Taghiyev, Shamsi Asadullayev and Musa Naghiyev, were also promi nent personalities and there are still legends, or near legends, about them. However, among this cohort there was room for a romantic magnate - Murtuza Mukhtarov, the story of whose life and work should have long been committed to the silver screen. But it hasn't happened yet... The Edison of Baku Just as in America, the first oil millionaires in Azerbaijan emerged from the lowest social layers. Early in their careers they worked in industry as labourers, assistants to craftsmen or craftsmen themselves. Murtuza Mukhtarov travelled the same path - from labourer to oilman millionaire. Mukhtarov was born in the village of Amirjan in 1865. Almost every one in his family was an arabachi, a carter - they carried loads on ox and horse-drawn carts along the Baku-Tiflis road. In 1880, having sold their araba, the young Murtuza and his brother began working as labourers in oilfields near the village of Balakhani. For some time he worked as a scooper he scooped oil manually from the primitive wells. The owner of the field noticed the young man who stood out from his colleagues for his quick-thinking.

Relying on a unique body of sources, which include handwritten manuscripts, literary works, unpublished memoirs, periodicals, correspondence, and political parties’ records, the research explores the new cultural settings that emerged after the incorporation of Azerbaijan into the Russian empire. New means of communication and new types of sociability, in a global context of urbanization and cosmopolitanization, gave rise to secular modernist reformers and empowered both European- educated Azeri male and female elites to express modern ideas on public education and gender roles. The introduction of secular education for Muslim young women, initiated by modern- educated male intellectuals and industrialists, advanced a cohort of independent and publicly active Azeri women who struggled for equal rights with men.
