ANAHTAR KELİMELER: Orthoptera, Isophya sikorai, spermatofor, ampulla, sperm sayısı i ABSTRACT MSc Thesis A STUDY ON MALE’S SPERMATOPHORE CONTENTS CHANGING DEPENS ON TIME AT Isophya sikorai (ORTHOPTERA: PHANEROPTERINAE) RİHAN OKTAY Harran University Instute of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Biology Supervisor : Associate Prof. Dr Seyit Ahmet OYMAK Year: 2011, Page:53 At many bushcrickets have submitting species, males a wedding gift to females during mating. One of these gift types is spermatophore. This wedding present is formed from two parts; one spermatophylax which do not consist sperm and ampulla which consists sperm. After mating, female eats spermatophore starting from spermatophylax. There are two hypothesis concerning spermatophore, which is formed by male, that it is made from what. One of these hypothesises are related with protection of sperm transfer, and second one is parent investment hypothesis. At bushcrickets, females generally mate with more than one male and this causes existing of sperm at female`s spermatheca to be more than one male`s sperm and this effectuate sperm competition. This has caused many strategic behaviors at male bushcrickets. Increasing spermatophylax and ampulla investment is an indicator of this condition. Positive relation between spermatophylax and ampulla supports that spermatophore`s initial main duty is insuring transfer of sperm. In this study, weight changing of male and female and effects of this change onto producing of spermatophore has been determined by providing males belonging to Isophya sikorai genus to mate 6 times. Besides, weight and content changes of spermatophore, which have been produced by male, have been examined during 6 matings. It has been determined a positive relation between male weight and spermatophore weight. It has been determined that weight and quantity of spermatophore, spermatophylax and ampulla is increasing in time and by depending on quantity of mating till fifth mating and it has decreased at sixth mating. A positive relation between spermatophylax and ampulla has been stated. As a result, our detection of positive relation between spermatophylax and ampulla are supporting the hypothesis that the main duty of spermatophore is for protection transfer of sperm. The sensilla of the male postabdomen of the Mediterranean Katydid Phaneroptera nana were investigated by scanning electron microscope in order to study their involvement in copulatory behaviour. The externally visible parts at the abdominal extremity are the dorsal epiproct and the ventral subgenital plate which together form a kind of pincer, and the highly developed cerci which are curved like a hook. The more internal parts are the paraprocts and the genitalia. The epiproct bears three types of aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia on its external surface, and only aporous sensilla filiformia on its internal surface. The subgenital plate is equipped with aporous sensilla chaetica and aporous sensilla filiformia present on its external surface whereas its internal surface is without sensilla. The cercal sensilla are composed of aporous sensilla filiformia of two subtypes, aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia. The surface of the paraprocts is endowed with aporous sensilla filiformia, two subtypes of aporous sensilla chaetica and sensilla campaniformia. The genitalia comprise uniporous sensilla basiconica with the abruptly narrowed tip. They are joined together by a median small tongue provided with uniporous sensilla basiconica, and are edged with a pad bearing sensilla campaniformia.

Phonochorion Uvarov (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Phaneropterinae) is a little known genus consisting of three species: Ph. satunini, Ph. artvinensis and Ph. uvarovi. The objective of this study is to conduct a thorough distributional, taxonomic and system- atic revision of the genus Phonochorion using both bioacustic and external morphological characters. Field surveys indicate that the genus is distributed from the Trabzon region of Turkey to the Khulo province of Georgia however the exact limit of the eastern dis- tribution of the genus remains unknown. Phonochorion species occur only on the northern slopes of the East Black Sea and Lesser Caucasus Mountains. The Coruh Valley, which seprates the East Black Sea and Lesser Caucasus Mountain ranges, seems to be an effective physical and climatic barrier and determines the distribution of these species. Ph. uvarovi can clearly be distinguished from Ph. satunini and Ph. artvinensis by the calling songs of males and external morphological characters. Ph. artvinensis and Ph. satunini differ in several taxonomic characters but the males have virtually identical calling songs.

This coun- try is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Basin and its palaeo-geographical origins are owed to complex natural phenomena, as well as to a multitude of centres-of-origin, where colonization of fauna and flora concerned. Out of 382 Orthoptera taxa (i.e., species and sub- species) known to occur in Italy, 160 (41.9%) are endemic. Most of them are restricted to the Alps, the Apennines or the two principal islands of Italy (i.e., Sardinia and Sicily). In addition, lowland areas in central-southern Italy host many endemic taxa, which probably originate from the Balkan Peninsula. In Italy, the following 8 genera are considered endemic: Sardoplatycleis, Acroneuroptila, Italopodisma, Epipodisma, Nadigella, Pseudoprumna, Chorthopodisma and Italohippus. Moreover, the subgenus Italoptila is endemic to Italy. For research regarding endemism, Orthoptera are particularly interesting because this order com- prises species characterized by different ecological traits; e.g., different dispersal abilities, contrasting thermal requirements or specific demands on their habitats. The highest percentage of apterous or micropterous (35.3%) and brachypterous (16.2%) endemic taxa live in the Apennines, which are among the most isolated mountains of the Italian Peninsula.

Chromosomes of the males of five species of Odontura, belonging to the subgenera Odontura and Odonturella, were ana- lyzed. Intensive evolution of the karyotype was recorded, both in terms of changes in the numbers of chromosomes (from 2n = 31 to 27) and the sex chromosome system (from X0 to neo-XY and X0 to neo-X1X2Y). Karyotype evolution was accompanied by tandem autosome fusions and interspecific autosomal and sex chromosome differentiation involving changes in the locations of nucleolar organizer regions, NORs, which were revealed by silver impregnation and confirmed by FISH using an 18S rDNA probe. O. (Odon- turella) aspericauda is a polytypic species with X0 and neo-X1X2Y sex determination. The latter system is not common in tettigo- niids.

  • The Biogeography of Iberian Orthopteroids'
The biogeography of iberian orthopteroids' by S. K. GANGWERE and E. MORALES AGACINO The Iberian Peninsula is of interest to biogeographers, ecologists, and systematists because of its striking zonation, isolation, and strategic location between two continents, Europe and Africa. It is remarkably diverse in its biotic communities. Not surprisingly, its orthopterous fauna is rich, cornposed in reality of severa1 distinct subfaunae. The only pre- vious discussion of them was CAZURRO(1888), whicli pioneering effort is now antiquated. Our treatrnent oi the subject, below, will be given after comment on the Peninsula itself. The Iberian Peninsula is a shield-shaped Jand mass of approxiinately 650 by 600 miles in dirnension and 229,640 square miles in area (including certain nearby insular provinces). Though its basic plan was not really completed unti1 late Tertiary times, it was actually roughed out by the end of the Niocene; thus, the land is old if not ancient. It is today compri- sed of Spain (appr~ximatel~five sixths of the total land area), Portugal (about one sixth), and the minute territory of Gibraltar. It is bounded on three sides (or about seven eighths of its total boundary) by water and on the fourth by the towering Pyrenees Mountains that effectively seal it from the remainder of Europe to the north. To the south it comes within 14 miles of Africa at the Straits of Gibraltar and within 8 112 at the point between Tarifa and Cape Cires. The Iberian cozst t3nds to be rnountainous, dropping preripitously to the water's edge, but varies according to region.

E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author Abstract The phallus in Tettigoniidae (katydids) is a structure informative relative to the systematics of the group. Despite this, it is often not considered in descriptions of taxa. The lack of adequate descriptions of phalli is not only a gap for systematic and morphological studies, but postpones works on the evolution of copula. Here we study the exoskeletal morphology of the phallus in katydids, its components, and revised the terminology for them. We carried out dissections for morpholog- ical comparisons, and complement the observational information with published data. We stained phalli of katydids with chlorazol black, to better contrast membranous versus sclerotized components. We demonstrate that phallic components vary at specific, generic and suprageneric levels, and that internal and external components vary in number, shape, size and position. Currently there is little comparative data to support hypotheses on the evolution of this structure, but possibly the possession of a titillator is an ancestral condition.

The Evolution and Function of the Spermatophylax in Bushcrickets (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). Karim Vahed, B.Sc Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, January 1994. ".. and soon from the male's convulsive loins there is seen to issue, in painful labour, something monstrous and un heard of, as though the creature were expelling its entrails in a lump". J.ll.Fabre (1899). To my Father. Abstract In certain species of cricket and bushcricket (Orthoptera; Ensifera), the male transfers an elaborate spermatophore to the female at mating. This consists of a sperm-containing ampulla and an often substantial, sperm-free, gelatinous mass known as the spermatophylax. After mating, the female eats the spermatophylax before consuming the ampulla. The spermatophylax is particularly well developed in the bushcrickets (Tettigoniidae) and can contribute to a loss of as much as 40% of male body weigh at mating in some species. Recently, there has been considerable debate over the selective pressures responsible for the evolution and maintenance of the spermatophylax and other forms of nuptial feeding in insects. Two different, though not mutually exclusive, functions have been suggested for the spermatophylax: 1) nutrients from the spermatophylax may function to increase the weight and\or number of eggs laid by the female, i.e. may function as paternal investment; 2) the spermatophylax may function to prevent the female from eating the ampulla before complete ejaculate transfer, i.e. may be regarded as a form of mating effort. In this study, a comparative approach combined with laboratory manipulations were used in an attempt to elucidate the selective pressures responsible for the origin, evolutionary enlargement and maintenance (= function) of the spermatophylax in bushcrickets.

Within the bushcrickets, the subfamily Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera: Tettigonioidea) comprises more than 2000 predominantly long-winged species in the tropics. However, the roughly 300 European representatives are mainly short-winged. The system- atics of these radiations have been unclear, leading to their unreliable formal treatment, which has hindered analysis of the evolutionary patterns of flight loss. A molecular phylogeny is presented for 42 short-winged species and members of all European long-winged genera based on the combined data from three nuclear gene sequences (18S, H3, ITS2). We found four phylogenetic lineages: (i) the first included the short-wing species of the genus Odontura; (ii) a further branch is represented by the South-American short-winged Cohnia andeana; (iii) an assemblage of long-wing taxa with a deep branching pattern includes the members of the tribes Acrometopini, Ducetiini, Phaneropterini, and Tylopsidini; (iv) a large group contained all short-winged taxa of the tribe Barbitistini. Phaneropterinae flightlessness originated twice in the Western Palaearctic, with a number of mainly allo- and parapatrically distributed species of the Barbistini in Southeastern Europe, and the Middle East and a limited number of Odontura species in Northern Africa and Southwestern Europe.
