Now, it doesn’t look like they’re going to make the 2025 deadline. Though progress has been made in keeping pollutants out of Bay tributaries, a combination of factors like a lack of regulatory enforcement by states, accelerating impacts of climate change, and the effects of COVID-19 are hindering long-standing efforts. MPT host Frank Sesno* once again drives compelling conversation in this one-hour forum. Sesno will be joined by the most knowledgeable experts, activists and officials on Chesapeake Bay health and cleanup. To help meet the federally-mandated 2025 deadline that calls for reduced amounts of nutrients, sediment and other pollutants, efforts will have to accelerate at a pace never seen before. Yearly nitrogen reduction will have to triple. The pace with which streamside buffers and agricultural best management practices are installed will have to pick up substantially. The stakes are high: the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries remain toxic and prone to algal blooms that starve the water of oxygen. As a result, iconic species like oysters, rockfish and shad continue to languish. * Frank Sesno is a former CNN correspondent, anchor and Washington bureau chief. He spent 11 years as Director of Media and Public Affairs at the George Washington University and is currently Director of Strategic Initiatives. - 4 - NEW PROGRAM Power of the Paddle 30 minutes, 2021 Release Date: 4/24/21 Rights: 5 plays through 12/31/21 When Chris Hopkinson, a 46-year-old father and standup paddleboard enthusiast decided to embark on a 200-mile journey through the nation’s largest estuary, plenty of people called him crazy. Chris was just glad they were paying attention. Inspired by his daughter’s science project and new-found knowledge that a single oyster can filter up to fifty gallons of water a day, coupled with the fact that the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay is at historic lows, Chris wanted to do something big to raise awareness for oyster recovery. Power of the Paddle is a half-hour documentary that tells the story of the first-ever attempt to paddle the length of the Chesapeake Bay. The nine- day journey is fraught with powerful winds, unpredictable storms, and Chris’s own haunting doubts. Motivated by a desire to keep the bay clean for his kids and theirs, Chris is anxious to unleash the power of the paddle. - 5 - NEW PROGRAM Run Wild Run Free: 50 Years of Wild & Scenic Rivers 44 minutes, 2018 Release Date: 4/22/21 Rights: 5 plays through 12/31/21 More than 60 years ago America was in the peak of the industrial revolution and the nation’s waterways were dying from dams, water diversions and pollution. The plight of America's rivers caught the attention of twin brothers and renowned wildlife biologists John and Frank Craighead. After witnessing the demise of their childhood river, the Potomac in Maryland, and after hearing of dam proposals on Montana's most wild river where they were studying grizzly bears on the verge of extinction, they were inspired to act. Run Wild Run Free tells the story of the resulting Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 and its legacy. Sweeping visuals accompany stories told by experts, grassroots organizations, white water enthusiasts and members of the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho. - 6 - NEW PROGRAM The Sentinels 30 minutes, 2020 Release Date: 4/20/21 Rights: 5 plays through 12/31/21 Directed by award-winning filmmakers, The Sentinels is a documentary that tells the inspirational stories of the farmers, ranchers, environmentalists, and military bases working together under the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership to create a more sustainable future. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. • Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples of Shikoku Island: a Bibliography of Resources in English
Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples of Shikoku Island: A Bibliography of Resources in English Naomi Zimmer LIS 705, Fall 2005 The most widely known work in English about the Shikoku pilgrimage is undoubtedly Oliver Statler’s 1983 book Japanese Pilgrimage , which combines a personal account of Statler’s pilgrimage in Shikoku with substantial background and cultural information on the topic. The University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library Japan Collection houses Statler’s personal papers in the Oliver Statler Collection , which includes several boxes of material related to the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Oliver Statler Collection is an unparalleled and one of a kind source of information in English on the Shikoku pilgrimage. The contents range from Statler’s detailed notes on each of the 88 temples to the original manuscript of Japanese Pilgrimage . Also included in the collection are several hand-written translations of previous works on the pilgrimage that were originally published in Japanese or languages other than English. The Oliver Statler Collection may be the only existing English translations of many of these works, as they were never published in English. The Collection also contains several photo albums documenting Statler’s pilgrimages on Shikoku taken between 1968 and 1979. A Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples in Shikoku Island (1973) is likely the earliest example of an English-language monograph on the specific topic of the Shikoku pilgrimage. This book, written by the Japanese author Mayumi Banzai, focuses on the legendary priest Kobo Daishi (774-835 A.D.) and the details of his association with the Shikoku pilgrimage. The books A Henro Pilgrimage Guide to the Eighty-eight Temples on Shikoku, Japan (Taisen Miyata), Echoes of Incense: a Pilgrimage in Japan (Don Weiss), The Traveler's Guide to Japanese Pilgrimages (Ed Readicker-Henderson), and Tales of a Summer Henro (Craig McLachlan) are all more recent personal accounts offering a less scholarly and more practical “guidebook” look at the pilgrimage.

THE MUSICO-DRAMATIC EVOLUTION OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN’S SOUTH PACIFIC DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By James A. Lovensheimer, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Arved Ashby, Adviser Professor Charles M. Atkinson ________________________ Adviser Professor Lois Rosow School of Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Since its opening in 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize- winning musical South Pacific has been regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. Frequently revived, filmed for commercial release in 1958, and filmed again for television in 2000, it has reached audiences in the millions. It is based on selected stories from James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods.

  • Books from Both Side of the Ditch
Tidewater Tales: Books from Both Sides of the Ditch Book Collecting Contest January 21, 2019 1 Swimming in the Chesapeake Bay is one of the great joys of my life, from jumping off the bow of my parents Morgan 30’ as a child to swim in the almost fresh and almost always nettle-less Sassafras River, to moonlight swimming in the Chesapeake Bay proper from the beach at the end of the street where I grew up in Arundel on the Bay, and even the frosty exhilarance which comes with the Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park. If you grew up within a 25 mile radius of the Chesapeake Bay, you refer to it ubiquitously as the Bay, an omnipresent waterway which bisects Maryland in two. And while the Bay can be experienced a number of ways be it sailing, powerboating, fishing, crabbing, or even a stroll at the water’s edge; swimming puts you in the middle of it. It is in this way that swimming is an apt metaphor for the experience of reading. Swimming in the Bay can take many forms too: from doggy paddling on the surface on the first perfect day in May, to diving down to murky black bottom looking for some refreshing water in late summer. Swimming is endlessly satisfying, an activity for both young and old, yet another way it is just like reading. It is hard to gain any perspective when you are swimming at the surface, so this collection is an attempt at providing some, about a beautifully varied subject.

  • A Journey Through Polish Literature
A JOURNEY THROUGH POLISH LITERATURE European Literature 09 OCTOBRE 2013 GORA BERNADETTE Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996). How many of you know these four authors and know what they have in common, besides their nationalities? The four of them were awarded a Nobel Prize but nevertheless remain little known outside of Poland. How many of you can give the name of, at least, one polish contemporary author? These examples, among many others, prove that Polish literature remains unknown despite it being a big part of European literature. To start my presentation, I’d like you to have a look on this quotation by Czesław Miłosz who wrote, among other, a book about the History of Polish Literature (The History of Polish Literature, Berckeley,1969). In his work, he wrote “Polish literature focused more on drama and the poetic expression of the self than on fiction (which dominated the English-speaking world). The reasons find their roots on the historical circumstances of the nation.” Over a first phase, it thus seems important to start out with a broad overview of the general history of Polish literature throughout the ages before we can understand what happened during the 20th century, and fully understand the main references to the previous time periods which we can find today. In Polish literature, historical problems have always been an essential characteristic. One can notice that Polish literature has always been torn between its social duties and literary obligations. With this in mind, it is possible for me to offer you the promised journey through my national literature.
