I quite liked this book, its different to anything I have read before. I hope whichever novel it is will open the door to wonderful places, brilliant narrative and outstanding characters. Only complaint is that the love interest was a pretty far-fetched coincidence. The author injects some of the police procedural unsurprising in view of his background to achieve the tasks he has been set as an officer of this new police force: using informants, interviewing suspects, and there is even an scene or two involving Georgian court procedure when accused are arraigned but, although interesting enough, I did not find it really compelling. Readers can't help but enjoy Michener's amazingly creative style of blending historical facts with real life-long characters in realistic scenes from the past, sprinkled with lots of humor! His mother and father are both craftspeople: she, a weaver; he, a carpenter. The family lived near Lake Ontario, and Bock remembers his father building a sailboat in their basement, an experience that later influenced his short story collection,Olympia . There were few English-language books in his childhood home, so becoming a writer wasn’t Bock’s original career choice. As a boy, he dreamed of being a marine biologist.     Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples of Shikoku Island: A Bibliography of Resources in English Naomi Zimmer LIS 705, Fall 2005 The most widely known work in English about the Shikoku pilgrimage is undoubtedly Oliver Statler’s 1983 book Japanese Pilgrimage , which combines a personal account of Statler’s pilgrimage in Shikoku with substantial background and cultural information on the topic. The University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library Japan Collection houses Statler’s personal papers in the Oliver Statler Collection , which includes several boxes of material related to the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Oliver Statler Collection is an unparalleled and one of a kind source of information in English on the Shikoku pilgrimage. The contents range from Statler’s detailed notes on each of the 88 temples to the original manuscript of Japanese Pilgrimage . Also included in the collection are several hand-written translations of previous works on the pilgrimage that were originally published in Japanese or languages other than English. The Oliver Statler Collection may be the only existing English translations of many of these works, as they were never published in English. The Collection also contains several photo albums documenting Statler’s pilgrimages on Shikoku taken between 1968 and 1979. A Pilgrimage to the 88 Temples in Shikoku Island (1973) is likely the earliest example of an English-language monograph on the specific topic of the Shikoku pilgrimage. This book, written by the Japanese author Mayumi Banzai, focuses on the legendary priest Kobo Daishi (774-835 A.D.) and the details of his association with the Shikoku pilgrimage. Faris Reflecting the paradoxical nature of its title, magical realism is a complicated term to define and to apply to works of art. Some writers and critics argue that classifying texts as magical realism essentializes and exoticizes works by marginalized authors from the latter part of the twentieth-century, particularly Latin American and postcolonial writers, while others consider magical realism to be nothing more than a marketing label used by publishers. These criticisms along with conflicting definitions of the term have made classifying contemporary works that employ techniques of magical realism a challenge. My dissertation counters these criticisms by elucidating the value of magical realism as a narrative mode in the twenty-first century and underlining how magical realism has become an appealing means for representing contemporary anxieties in popular culture. To this end, I analyze how the characteristics of magical realism are used in a select group of novels and films in order to demonstrate the continued significance of the genre in modern art.
