This will be our 4th year holding the Automobilia AUTOMOBILIA AUCTIONEER Auction and will include auctioning a 1988 Fleetwood Brougham. HAMPTON ROADS REGION LIAISON As in previous years, we are asking for donations such as books, GEORGE BOXLEY vintage posters, die-cast cars, usable Cadillac/LaSalle parts, etc. NEWSLETTER COLUMNIST RITA BIAL-BOXLEY 1 Starting with the 2007 Spring Car Show, a vehicle receiving NEWSLETTER COLUMNIST “Best of Show” may also receive an award in its class, but will CHRIS CUMMINGS not be eligible to receive “Best Pre War” or “Best Post War” at CAR SHOW DISPLAYING/PARKING DERRICK FISHER the same show. Vehicles that are awarded a total of two “Best CAR SHOW DISPLAYING/PARKING of Show” awards shall be considered as “Emeritus” vehicles, NEWSLETTER COLUMNIST eligible for special recognition, but no longer eligible to be judged JIM GOVONI in its class or in any “Best” class. Both of these events are held at the Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. On Saturday, June 9th the selected car clubs will participate in our Car Club Day. Participation in this show will allow you to show your car on our concours show field on Saturday. By participating in the Saturday Car Club Day, the car owner will receive two free tickets for the Sunday Concours show. The cost for the Saturday Car Club Day is $10 per car. An additional Saturday activity will be our Car Tour to downtown historic Bethlehem. After parking in the blocked off center square you will enjoy breakfast and shopping in the unique local shops. The Car Tour will return to the Saturday show field, and each tour car will receive two free tickets for the Sunday Concours show. Cost of the Saturday Tour package and breakfast is $50 for the car and driver, and $25 for each additional passenger. The Car Club Day registration form should be completed and returned to the Burn Prevention Foundation, 236 N.17th Street, Floor 2, Allentown, PA 18104. DIRECTOR’S REMARKS: Potomac Region Member Myron Pauley died on March 13th at the age of 92. A tribute will appear in the April newsletter. The presidential limos story from our March newsletter was picked-up by Hemmings and posted on their Internet blog. As a result of this exposure, activity on our website peaked at 6,322 hits on March 7th (usual volume approx. 1,000/day). SECRETARY’S REPORT: The Minutes from the February meeting were not read since they had been published and distributed to all members in the March, 2007 newsletter. TREASURER’S REPORT: The Treasurer’s Report covered the time period from the February meeting to date. Harry Scott reported that the Region’s income was $40.98. The total expenses for the same time period were $461.97.

Location: Archives Notes: For additional information, see: WJBC Radio Subject Photograph Collection. 2 Historical Sketch Shortly after graduating from high school in 1924, Lee Stremlau of LaSalle and several of his friends began making unlicensed radio broadcasts from the Hummer Furniture Store in LaSalle, Illinois. They persuaded Wayne Hummer to apply for a license to broadcast, and they were granted one by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover in the name of the Hummer Furniture Company in 1925. They were given permission to broadcast at 100 watts at a wavelength of 1280 kilocycles and were assigned the call letters WJBC. Stremlau used the letters to create the slogan “Where Jazz Becomes Classic” for the radio station and his business, Lee Stremlau’s Radio and Victrola Shop. The inaugural broadcast, which included a speech by the mayor of the city, was praised in the May 5, 1925 edition of a LaSalle paper, which reported that the Hummer store was flooded with calls congratulating the entrepreneurs. In the next few years, the Federal Radio Commission would reassign WJBC to a new wavelength twice, first to 1320 kilocycles in 1927, on which they shared time with stations WWAE and WCLO, and then to 1200 kilocycles, shared with WJBL, a year later.

  • 1939 Lasalle by Vern Parker
    CAR OF THE MONTH I first met Vern Parker when he was automotive editor for the Washington Times. Each week, his column featured an unusual car he went to see and learn about. Not wanting to be left out, I called Vern and told him about my 1953 Oldsmobile. He was interested and came to see it with a Times photographer in tow. We have been friends ever since. At the time, and for many years, Vern also sponsored an annual show featuring cars he had written about. It wasimpressive how many fine and rare cars would show up. And it was an honor to be invited.Vern still does an on-line version of his old car column, called Street Dreams. Just google on Vern Parker name and you will find it. Vern Parker is an iconic “Car Guy” and we are fortunate to have him as a member of the Bull Run Region. Right now, I feel fortunate that he has provided me with the July Car of the Month. When I asked Vern to do a story about his own car, he was reluctant. He told me he had never written about himself or his car. Over the 14-year run, LaSalles were equipped with Cadillac V-8 engines, except for 1934, 1935 and 1936 when in-line straight-eight engines built by Oldsmobile with Cadillac parts were installed.
