And, finally, to my parents for their unwavering faith and optimism, and for providing a quiet refuge for me to work. ii Abstract The process of campus internationalization at St. Norbert College, a small liberal arts college in the Upper Midwest, is analyzed as a case study in this dissertation. St. Norbert College was selected as an institution because it received the Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization in 2004. Using two studies that demonstrate effective methods for implementing campus internationalization (Johnston & Edelstein, 1993; Kelleher, 1996) and a more recent study on transformational change in higher education (Eckel & Kezar, 2003), a framework of five important factors is used as a theoretical proposition in the case study. Through interviews with key faculty members, senior administrators, and staff involved in campus internationalization, and analysis of documents dating back to 1972, seven important factors are identified, including the five factors in the framework, as well as two other factors unique to St. Norbert College. Employing a systems model, an explanation is developed of how a combination of multiple factors working together influenced several campus-internationalization initiatives at St. Norbert College. There are similarities in the factors influencing campus internationalization when comparing the case institution against the theoretical framework, suggesting some commonality of factors. Also identified are important factors unique to St. Norbert College. The combination of factors working together is key in the development and sustainability of campus-internationalization initiatives. iii Table of Contents List of Tables     The Ruusbroec Institute and its library FRANS HENDRICKX Establishment The Ruusbroec Institute Library developed alongside the vision of its founders, led by Father Stracke († 1970), whose aim was to study the history of spirituality in the Low Countries. When Stracke received his doctorate in Germanic Philology from Leuven in 1903-1904 with a thesis on the lives of Christina of Sint-Truiden and Lutgardis of Tongeren, his mentor Louis Scharpé († 1935) encouraged him in his ambition to establish the Bibliotheca Ascetica Patrum Societaties Jesu Provinciae Flandrensis . This central library of the Order would provide the necessary resources and study materials for conducting research into the spirituality of the Jesuit Society in the Low Countries between the Counter Reformation and the eighteenth century. This was because the Bibliographie de la Compagnie de Jésus , assembled in twelve successive parts by Augustin and Alois De Backer († 1873 and 1883 respectively) and Carlos Sommervogel († 1902), was deemed to be in need of expansion and improvement with regard to the Jesuit writers of both the southern and northern Low Countries. However, since ascetic and mystical writings had often been overlooked and treated disparagingly in Dutch literary history books, and in light of the emancipation of Arm Vlaanderen (Poor Flanders) – Stracke's remarkable speech to the Katholieke Vlaamsche Wacht in Borgerhout on 13 November 1913 – the original plan, which was never actually realized, gradually transformed into a more general exploration of the Low Countries' spiritual history, beginning in the Middle Ages. Three Jesuits, all Germanics graduates of the Leuven Alma Mater – Desideer A. Stracke († 1970), Jozef Van Mierlo († 1958) and Leonce Reypens († 1972) – were the founding scholars of a new working community formed in 1925.

Communio is characterized by mutual esteem, trust, sincerity, faith and responsibility, and is lived through open dialogue, communication, consultation and collaboration. In order for everyone to effectively engage in this ongoing dialogue, it is important that we share some of the same vocabulary and understand the concepts that shape our values as an institution. Because the college community is composed of people from diverse faith traditions and spiritual perspectives, this glossary explains a number of terms and concepts from the Catholic and Norbertine traditions with which some may not be familiar. We offer it as a guide to help people avoid those awkward moments one can experience when entering a new community – a place where people can sometimes appear to be speaking in code.     St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Champion, Wisconsin 1862 – 2012 1 History of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Champion In the 1850’s, times were very hard in the Country of Belgium. Over population had resulted in farms becoming smaller. The crops were suffering a reduction because of drought and diseases, including a severe potato blight (which lasted many years). Many farmers didn’t own their farmland, but depended on landlords for their income. Some of the workers depended on successful crops for their food, because for their labors they would receive a certain amount of a harvest. The peasants could not gain a decent living from the production of their land alone. So many of them found additional sources of income in rural industries such as distilling, brewing, sugar milling. Some home activities were cutlery, straw plaiting, and nail making. There was famine and epidemics of cholera and typhus, which caused many deaths. Some of the rural work force preferred to search elsewhere for more prosperous conditions. It is in this way immigration to the United States constituted a last hope. After Wisconsin became a state in 1848, the state government initiated a campaign to attract settlers. In 1851 a handbook called “The Emigrant’s Handbook and Guide to Wisconsin”, was circulated in Belgium. The campaign was advertised in European papers and urged people to move to Wisconsin, where land was cheap, along with freedom and opportunity. The major time period for Belgian Immigration was in 1855 and 1856, although many others came in later years. On May 18, 1853 the first Belgian Immigrants from Grez-Doiceau, in the province of Brabant, estimated at being 81 individuals, sailed from their homeland, heading toward the United States.

The Abbey Berne, located in Heeswijk-Dinther is no exception. They are concerned with formulating a future vision and want to include possibilities in tourism and recreation as a means to combat the issue of increasing costs. Yet, it is difficult to make a decision. That is why this research provides guidance in the decision-making process using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This model allows for input from the stakeholders themselves, thus allowing for discussion and the use of explicit arguments. The goal is to decide on a target group that is most desired by the abbey for tourism and recreation. Results show that privacy, hospitality and economic value are the criteria that receive the highest priority when making a decision. Following this reasoning, religious tourists are the most desired target group. The AHP proves to be a useful tool in guiding a decision-making process. This research suggests re-doing and re-using the model for further decisions the abbey faces. ii Summary This research focuses on a case study; Abbey Berne located in Heeswijk-Dinther. It has reached out to the provincial government of Noord-Brabant for guidance in the process of formulating a future vision. Additionally, the abbey is facing the issue of increasing costs and is searching for possibilities to combat this issue, an issue which is common for religious heritage sites nowadays.
