Pastoral Message Dear St. Mary Parishioners & Visitors, Often I receive questions regarding the difference between diocesan and religious order priests. Perhaps the easiest explanation has to do with the vows and personal call of each priest. A diocesan priest takes his vows to the diocesan Bishop; he takes the vows of obedience and celibacy. A Religious Order priest takes his vows to his Religious Superior; he takes the vows of obedience, celibacy and poverty. As a teen -ager, I felt a call to the priesthood and to teaching. The Norbertines, who taught me in high school, offered me the possibility of fulfilling both parts of my calling. Over these next few months, I hope to share with you some of the charism of the Norbertine Order. Our Founder, St. Norbert, was born at Xanten on the Dutch -German border in 1080. He grew up in wealth and enjoyed a plentiful life in his early manhood. When Norbert was 20, his wit & charm brought him the attention of the Archbishop of Cologne. Norbert eventually became chaplain to the Roman Emperor. In 1115, Norbert underwent a conversion experience, often described similar to that of St. Paul. Eventually, Norbert settled in the valley of Premontre, France. On Christmas, 1120, the Bishop of Laon (France) vested Norbert and his 40 followers in the white habit of canons regular. (Canons are groups of priests who serve a cathedral or church. Canons Regular live in religious communities under common rules & vows.) The official title for the Norbertines is “Premonstratensian Order.” Norbert’s community at Premontre was an innovation, since it was the first to combine active parish ministry with monastic life. In 1123, Norbert battled a heresy that questioned the validity of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Norbert restored orthodoxy and eventually was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg (Germany) where he died on June 6, 1134. We Norbertines continue to live together in community while ministering to the local people. Rather than the word ‘monastery’, we live in an Abbey. We elect our religious superior, an Abbot, to whom we vow obedience. The Abbey in De Pere is an outgrowth of Berne Abbey, Holland. Originally, we came to the Green Bay diocese at the invitation of the Bishop in 1893 to serve immigrants in the Peninsula. Shortly after, tutoring and schooling developed which resulted in sponsorship of Catholic high schools and St. Norbert College. Through out, Norbertines continued to serve in parishes. There are 52 members of St. Norbert Abbey. Of this number, small groups live in Chicago & Jackson, Mississippi. Two Abbeys have grown from ours; 1 outside Philadelphia & 1 in Albuquerque, NM. You can learn more about us at: norbertines.org (St. Norbert Abbey) & premontre.org (international). I am so happy to be with you. In Christ, through Mary, Fr. Dane Fr. Dane Radecki, O. Praem.
