Blaeser My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 – 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and mov- ing writer. -

Japanese Literature for the High School Classroom
Japanese Literature for the High School Classroom An annotated bibliography compiled and edited by the Educational Outreach Department Japan Society Dear Educator, Japan has a rich literary heritage that offers readers a doorway into Japanese history and culture. For high school readers Japanese literature can bring alive the historical characters they may meet in social studies class. Japan also offers a fascinating comparison to the literature of western or other Asian countries. Japanese literature has always been closely related to the visual arts and offers countless subjects that can be transformed into a variety of art forms. This annotated bibliography was prepared to help high school educators explore the world of Japanese literature that is appropriate for use in their classrooms. Because of the great breadth of subject matter in Japanese literature, it is often difficult to find works that fit into the interest and lives of young people. To make the search easier we offer this list of works that has been reviewed by a committee of high school educators. The works span the literary spectrum from verse, drama, and essays to novels, diaries, and short stories. Some of the works, such as 11th century The Tale of Genji, are well-known masterpieces of world literature. Other pieces, such as the 1989 short story, TV People, examine technology and its effect on contemporary urban society. The reviewers were asked to rate the works according to their suitability in the high school classroom on a scale from 1 (not suitable) to 10 (very suitable). All of the works were well- known by those who follow the world of Japanese literature. -

Abstract Heejung Kim, Ph.D., May 2018 ENGLISH THE OTHER AMERICAN POETRY AND MODERNIST POETICS: RICHARD WRIGHT, JACK KEROUAC, SONIA SANCHEZ, JAMES EMANUEL, AND LENARD MOORE (212 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Professor Yoshinobu Hakutani The purpose of this dissertation is to study Richard Wright, Jack Kerouac, Sonia Sanchez, James Emanuel, and Lenard Moore as haiku poets in their efforts to create their own genres. Only a few published critical essays exist on how American writers composed haiku and applied the philosophical and aesthetical principles of haiku. The genuine identity of the American haiku, however, has not been determined to date. The American haiku seems innovative since it is a hybrid genre whose inspirations are derived from Eastern culture and American culture. This dissertation explores each poet’s haiku and investigates whether it is just an escape from the traditional style of American poetry or if the American haiku is truly a different poetic genre with its own distinct identity. This study examines each poet’s characteristics, as well as his or her limitations as a haiku poet. Haiku Summary In this lesson, students will learn the form and basic theme of haikus. The students will figure out what makes haikus powerful. The students will have a chance to experiment and create their own haiku(s). Time Frame 1 class periods of 45 minutes each Life Skills Thinking & Reasoning Background for Teachers What is Haiku? Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku. This new form of poetry was to be written, read and understood as an independent poem, complete in itself, rather than part of a longer chain. Strictly speaking, then, the history of haiku begins only in the last years of the 19th century. The famous verses of such Edo-period (1600-1868) masters as Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa are properly referred to as hokku and must be placed in the perspective of the history of haikai even though they are now generally read as independent haiku. -

Theses on Haiku in English Abbas, Haruchi Ando. “Three Mediators of Haiku in America.” University of Iowa, 1988. MA thesis. 83 pages. Haruchi Abbas’s thesis compares three early translators of Japanese haiku and their various suggestions for the development of haiku in English. The three “mediators” are Harold G. Henderson, Reginald Horace Blyth, and Kenneth Yasuda. Giroux, Joan F. “Problems and Possibilities in Writing Haiku in English.” University of Ottawa, Ontario, 1968. 143 pages. MA thesis in English. Joan Giroux’s dissertation was edited and published as a book, The Haiku Form, by the Charles E. Tuttle Company in 1974. This dissertation and book was one of the first “primers” on how to write haiku in English. Giroux examines the difficulties of writing haiku in English “due to basic differences of language and poetic tradition. It is important that would-be writers of English haiku be aware of the problems.” She argues for the development of “a truly native English haiku tradition based on the western Judeo-Christian culture.” Iadonisi, Richard Alan. “’Like Ray Charles Is To Country’: Otherness And The American Haiku.” Indiana University, 1999. Dissertation. 213 pages. Richard Iadonisi employs a feminist analysis in his study of marginalized writers of American haiku. In contrast to white male poets such as Ezra Pound, Jack Kerouac, and Gary Snyder, who attempt to re-invent haiku in English, these marginalized writers “tend to adhere closely to the formal properties, especially the 5-7-5 format.” In his abstract he writes “marginalized poets call attention to the ‘haiku moment’ in which the poet loses the self through a merging with the natural world only to subvert it — Lowell by inserting homosexual desire, Wright by including elements of the blues, Vizenor by incorporating Ojibway dream songs and the trickster, and Sanchez by imbuing the poems with a sense of ‘sisterhood.’” Jones, Bob. -

Available on Project Muse and JStor. ABSTRACT: Formal aspects of haiku inform Roy Kiyooka’s 1969 travel journal Wheels. In contrast to earlier scholarship, this study differentiates haiku traditions in Japan from English language haiku in North America. This framework reveals how Kiyooka employs select aspects of haiku practice to voice his othered cultural location. In 2012, on a Graves Award Fellowship, I retraced parts of Matsuo Basho’s (1644–1694) route in his travel journal Narrow Road to the Interior. The journal, a mix of prose sections and haiku, records Basho’s five-month journey, beginning in the Spring of 1689, through northern areas of Honshu. He traveled with a disciple and fellow poet Sora.
