Chapter one is a detailed account of the life of Kobayashi Issa. It is divided into the following sections; 1. Background and Early Childhood. 2. Early Years in Edo. 3. His First Return to Kashiwabara. ,4. His Jiourney into Western Japan. 5. The Death of His Father. 6 . Life im and Around Edo. 1801-1813. 7. Life as a Poet in Shinano. 8 . Family Life in Kashiwabara.. 9* Conclusion. Haiku verses and prose pieces are introduced in this chapter for the purpose of illustrating statements made concerning his life. The second chapter traces the development of Issa*s style of haiku. It is divided into five sections which correspond to the.Japanese year periods in which Issa lived. Each section is preceded by selected translations from his work of that period. These selections are made on the basis of their usefulness to illustrate the development of his style of poetry. In their selection the following Japanese works on Kobayashi Issa are the major sources; (a). Kobayashi Issa, by Ito Masao, Sanseido Press. 1942. (b). Kobayashi Issa, by Maruyama Kazuhiko, Ofusha Press 1965. (c). Kobayashi Issa, by Kuriyama Riichi, Chikuma Shobo 3 Press 1970. (d)> Kobayashi Issa, Mukudori no Haijin, by Kaneko Tota Kodansha Press.1981* (e). Haikaiji Issa no Geijitsu, by Murata Noboru, Nishi Nation Tbyobunkakenkyusho. 1969 The text used for all translations is from The Complete Works of Issat published by the Mainichi Shinbunsha between 1976 and 1979»• in nine volumes. The development of Issafs style is traced in relation to the major influences upon it, his rural background, his life of poverty in Edo, the discrimination and loneliness he experienced, the literary influences to which he was exposed, his personality and religious faith and its development through the suffering and misfortune he experienced. Chapter three is a brief account of the history of the study of Issa in Japan. N.B. Japanese year periods, in Japanese nengo, are irregular- numbers of years which coincide with the length of the reign of each emperor. The system was instituted in the 7th. century and has continued ever since. The present year period, Showa, began when the present emperor began his reign in 1926, and will finish when he dies. The most popular spots for hanami get crowded with food and drink stalls, and sometimes there are festivals and events of all kinds. Plus, hanami in Osaka can be enjoyed not only during daytime, but also at night, when the cherry trees are lit up and offer a completely different scenery. This is a small, international, peer-reviewed conference with a limited number of oral and poster presentation time slots. We encourage all interested participants to submit presentations as early as possible. Please note that submissions and registration will close when the event has reached its capacity.

[1] Reduced weathering rates due to the lack of liquid water and significantly greater typical surface ages should result in a higher density of meteorites on the surface of Mars compared to Earth. Several meteorites were identified among the rocks investigated during Opportunity’s traverse across the sandy Meridiani plains. Heat Shield Rock is a IAB iron meteorite and has been officially recognized as ‘‘Meridiani Planum.’’ Barberton is olivine-rich and contains metallic Fe in the form of kamacite, suggesting a meteoritic origin. It is chemically most consistent with a mesosiderite silicate clast. Santa Catarina is a brecciated rock with a chemical and mineralogical composition similar to Barberton. Barberton, Santa Catarina, and cobbles adjacent to Santa Catarina may be part of a strewn field. Spirit observed two probable iron meteorites from its Winter Haven location in the Columbia Hills in Gusev Crater.

LA STANZA GIAPPONESE: WASHITSU Una caratteristica peculiare delle stanze in tatami (pavimenti in paglia intrecciata) è la loro doppia valenza: esse si trasformano da stanza da giorno a camera da letto in un attimo. Di giorno, infatti, nella stanza c'è solo il tavolo basso con i cuscini su cui sedersi, mentre la sera la cameriera sposta il tavolo e stende i futon (materassi) per terra, preparandoli per la notte. Il mattino, lasciata libera la stanza, la cameriera stende i futon a prendere aria prima di riporli nell'armadio e prepara il tavolo in centro alla stanza. Questo ciclo si ripete ogni giorno. In alcuni ryokan, la stanza viene sempre lasciata allestita a notte. Se si soggiorna in un minshuku, ryokan a conduzione familiare, e' probabile che siano gli stessi ospiti a doversi preparare il futon.     LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES A symbol becomes the culture: Reinventing Japanese cherry blossoms Author: Hanyan Ye Supervisor: Annika Pissin Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2015 ABSTRACT A major concern of this thesis was the changing meanings of cherry blossoms in Japanese history, and the images of Japan created through the flower. With a peculiar emphasis on today’s international context, when cherry blossoms have become a unique culture of Japan, this research inquired into the process of symbol-making. The Zenith concept of nyoze and poststructural discussions on language-power relations functioned as critical theoretical tools in revealing the articulation of knowledge within meanings related to the symbol, which empowered certain “truths” at different historical stages. In addition, the thesis illustrated that aestheticization and commodification were the two prominent forces in reinventing meanings, making them appear natural or commonsensical. Meanwhile, supported by interview findings, the thesis investigated into the uniqueness and authenticity of cherry blossoms in Japan, and contended that they !reinforced the asserted cultural homogeneity of the country. Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power.

Schmitt The silicate phases of 11 pallasites were analyzed instrumen- tally to determine the concentrations of some major, minor, and trace elements.The silicate phases were found to contain about 98% olivine with 1 to 2% accessory minerals such as lawrencite, schreibersite, troilite, chromite, and farringtonite present.The trace element concentrations, except Sc and Mn, were found to be extremely low and were found primarily in the accessory phases rather than in the pure olivine.An unusual bimodal Mn distribution was noted in the pallasites, and Eagle Station had a chondritic nor- malized REE pattern enrichedin the heavy REE. The silicate phases of pallasites and mesosiderites were shown to be sufficiently diverse in origin such that separate classifications are entirely justified.
