View Responses of Scouts, Scout Leaders, and Scientists Who Were Scouts
ABSTRACT This study of science education in the Boy Scouts of America focused on males with Boy Scout experience. The mixed-methods study topics included: merit badge standards compared with National Science Education Standards, Scout responses to open-ended survey questions, the learning styles of Scouts, a quantitative assessment of science content knowledge acquisition using the Geology merit badge, and a qualitative analysis of interview responses of Scouts, Scout leaders, and scientists who were Scouts. The merit badge requirements of the 121 current merit badges were mapped onto the National Science Education Standards: 103 badges (85.12%) had at least one requirement meeting the National Science Education Standards. In 2007, Scouts earned 1,628,500 merit badges with at least one science requirement, including 72,279 Environmental Science merit badges. ―Camping‖ was the ―favorite thing about Scouts‖ for 54.4% of the boys who completed the survey. When combined with other outdoor activities, what 72.5% of the boys liked best about Boy Scouts involved outdoor activity. The learning styles of Scouts tend to include tactile and/or visual elements. Scouts were more global and integrated than analytical in their thinking patterns; they also had a significant intake element in their learning style. ii Earning a Geology merit badge at any location resulted in a significant gain of content knowledge; the combined treatment groups for all location types had a 9.13% gain in content knowledge. The amount of content knowledge acquired through the merit badge program varied with location; boys earning the Geology merit badge at summer camp or working as a troop with a merit badge counselor tended to acquire more geology content knowledge than boys earning the merit badge at a one-day event. -

RESEARCH & PUBLIC HISTORY ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018 FOREWORD FOREWORD SALLY MACDONALD Director, Science and Industry Museum, Manchester Welcome to our fourth Research and Public History Annual Report, covering the academic year 2017/18. This year saw the adoption of the Science Museum Group’s new Research Strategy, which sets the framework for our research activity for the coming five years. The Strategy (see pp xx) declares our bold ambition to be globally the most research-informed science museum group, so that research underpins most aspects of our work, from collections management through to exhibition development and the design of new galleries and digital resources. In order to do this, we’ve committed to supporting our colleagues across many teams to develop their research potential. And we want to build our research networks to support an even wider range of collaborations. Page 182 Agenda Item 6b REPORT TO: Urban Renewal Policy & Performance Board DATE: 18 June 2008 REPORTING OFFICER: Strategic Director, Environment SUBJECT: The ‘Heart of Halton’ Plaque Scheme WARDS: Borough wide 1.0 PURPOSE OF THE REPORT 1.1 Halton has many famous places, people and landmark events, all of which have in some way shaped Halton and the towns and the parishes within the borough. Currently no one record of the achievements, places or people has been brought together in one celebratory scheme. This report sets out proposals to establish such a scheme – ‘The Heart of Halton’ which would be similar to the Civic Trust’s Blue Plaque scheme. It will seek to identify and celebrate where Halton’s achievers, people and activities took place or lived. 2.0 RECOMMENDED: That 1) The Board comments on the proposal to establish the Heart of Halton scheme 2) Subject to the Board’s agreement, a further report be brought before the Board, setting out the costs and operational requirements for implementing the scheme 3.0 BACKGROUND 3.1 The towns of Runcorn and Widnes and the various borough Parishes have much to be proud of. From ground breaking scientific achievements to contributions to popular music and contemporary society being born or bred within Halton’s boundaries. 3.2 The achievements and innovation may have happened elsewhere had it not been for the way in which Halton became a centre of excellence for a number of companies and individuals who decided to build their businesses or homes in the area. Examples of Halton’s rich and varied heritage can be found in appendix 1 of this report. -

ROBERT BURNS WOODWARD April 10, 1917–July 8, 1979 BY ELKAN BLOUT OBERT BURNS WOODWARD was the preeminent organic chemist Rof the twentieth century. This opinion is shared by his colleagues, students, and by other distinguished chemists. Bob Woodward was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was an only child. His father died when Bob was less than two years old, and his mother had to work hard to support her son. His early education was in the Quincy, Massachusetts, public schools. During this period he was allowed to skip three years, thus enabling him to finish grammar and high schools in nine years. In 1933 at the age of 16, Bob Woodward enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study chemistry, although he also had interests at that time in mathematics, literature, and architecture. His unusual talents were soon apparent to the MIT faculty, and his needs for individual study and intensive effort were met and encouraged. Bob did not disappoint his MIT teachers. He received his B.S. degree in 1936 and completed his doctorate in the spring of 1937, at which time he was only 20 years of age. Immediately following his graduation Bob taught summer school at the University of Illinois, but then returned to Harvard’s Department of Chemistry to start a productive period with an assistantship under Professor E. -

National Academy of Sciences - Biographical Memoirs http://www.nasonline.org/publications/biographical-memoirs/online-collection.html By Michael P. Filosa Flack Norris (1871-1940) for the November Nucleus, I came across his biographical memoir on the website of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). This memoir was written by John D. Roberts and was presented to the Academy in 1974, a scant(!) 34 years after his death. The NAS was founded in 1863 by 50 of the most prominent scientists in the United States, and its initial charter was signed by Abraham Lincoln. It is a tradition that each of its members be memorialized in a memoir to the Academy written by a peer (or two). These memoirs are a treasure trove of the history of science. The sole weakness is that they are posthumous and not necessarily, very timely. However, they are quite thorough and a good overview of the scientists, complete with a detailed listing of their major works. During my school years, I was always intrigued with stories about great scientists. Dan Kemp would talk extensively about his thesis advisor, R. B. Woodward, and his works. Those stories about Woodward (1917-1979) and also Gilbert Stork were very influential in my decision to pursue synthetic organic chemistry as a career. Woodward’s memoir was written by Elkan Blout (with assistance from Frank Westheimer) and was published in 2001, a “scant” 22 years after his death. The memoirs are often glowing: “Robert Burns Woodward was the preeminent organic chemist of the twentieth century. This opinion is shared by his colleagues, students and by other distinguished chemists.” Blout includes lengthy commentaries from Sir Derek Barton, Roald Hoffman and Albert Eschenmoser in the memoir. -

Inorganic Stamp Corner by Daniel Rabinovich Taming the Beast The French chemist Henri Moissan (1852-1907) was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for two rather different areas of scientific endeavor, namely the isolation of elemental fluorine and the introduction of the electric furnace in the preparation of metal carbides and other refractory materials. The selection committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences had a particularly difficult task that year, and Moissan edged out by a single vote (5-4) no one less than Dmitri Mendeleev, of periodic table fame. Unfortunately the renowned Russian chemist, who was considered an eccentric genius but an outsider in the European establishment, never got a chance to be nominated again since he died of influenza on February 2, 1907. As bad luck would have it, Moissan himself died from acute appendicitis only 18 days later, shortly after returning to Paris from his trip to Stockholm. The isolation of fluorine in 1886 was a remarkable achievement given the extreme reactivity of this element. Moissan succeeded by electrolyzing at -25 °C a solution of potassium hydrogen fluoride (KHF2) dissolved in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, using special platinum– iridium electrodes in a platinum U-shaped vessel capped with fluorite (CaF2) stoppers. Not exactly an experiment undergraduate students conduct today in a laboratory course! In any event, Moissan’s electrolytic cell is depicted on the two French stamps shown herein. Interestingly, the stamp on the left, released in 1986 to commemorate fluorine’s centennial, displays the incorrect (reverse) chemical equation, i.e., hydrogen does react with fluorine to yield hydrogen fluoride, but that is evidently not how the lightest halogen was isolated in the first place! .
