Some taster sessions will be held in the first couple of weeks of term and other projects are starting gradually throughout term 1. Keep reading to find out what is happening near you! Senior pupils will gain a qualification in coaching children with autism and work closely with the club coaches to gain experience and feel comfortable to continue the lunch time sessions.. Pupils at Balerno High School who need most support coming out of the pandemic will be invited to attend a workshop day with athlete presentations where the aim is to ask them what we can do to support them best and put in place activities and programmes to address those support needs. LEADERSHIP PROJECTS Identified Gracemount High School pupils will receive SFA Early Touches course, UKCC Level 1 Basketball course and first aid to enable them to successfully deliver introductory programmes. 15 pupils from Forrester High School S3/4 will be selected through guidance and PE. The pupils will be selected because they show an interest in sport and physical activity but lack confidence or support to put themselves forward. The programme will start with a confidence building leadership programme run by SHE Scotland and then the pupils will do Basketball and Athletics courses as well as an Inclusion course. They will be given opportunities to coach and will be given a mentor to support them throughout the year. Castlebrae High School will use football to develop leadership skills in S4 girls, which will also lead to a qualification. The girls will support the girls football coaching programme in the primary schools and will be able to access Gold and Gray soccer Academy. 14 pupils from Drummond High School will go through the following courses, Basketball – Make it happen, Volleyball, UK Disability Inclusion Training and Early Touches. This will allow the pupils to volunteer in the Active Schools programme. Tynecastle High School will create and develop a Dance mentoring programme where the S6’s will lead the project and S3’s will shadow and observe for them to take over when in S3. Identified S4 pupils will receive a Netball getting started and then Level 1 so they can support the Netball at Tynecastle and then roll out coaching into the primaries. Wester Hailes High School will provide a team building leadership day for senior pupils and give them qualifications in dance, football and basketball. In partnership with Scottish Disability Sport we will put on a ‘Disability Inclusion Training’ course for senior pupils at Boroughmuir High School who are on the Sports Leaders course and for other pupils who need additional support with their educational attainment and/or may need extra support to secure positive destinations when they leave school. Balerno High School will link with Currie FC to provide them with a number of coaching volunteers for their girls football section. The girls will complete the SFA Early Touches course and be able to volunteer with the club and the school. Early Touches Football courses for 3 pupils identified by the Pupil Support Leaders at Portobello High School. The pupils who go through this training will be offered the opportunity to help lead the S1-3 Pupils lunchtime football league. Further development opportunities will be offered through the Gold & Gray coach pathway. R E A L L Y G R E A T S I T E . C O M PENTLAND TRIATHLETES JUNIORS Come and Try Triathlon (Swim, Bike and Run) for those aged 8-18 years Venue: Forrester High School. Adults and children get the benefit of coached training sessions at the same time. As well as consistently finishing in the Top 3 at the Scottish National Age Group Championships over the last ten year period, the Club has a history of placing youth swimmers onto National teams (British and Scottish). The Club has 12 competitive squads ranging f rom entry level at around 8 years through to National Performance level. We also have a non competitive Junior Masters squad for swimmers to maintain fitness, and an adult Masters division training 5 times a week.     ANNUAL REVIEW 2018 – 19 “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair” - Nelson Mandela - 2 Foreword… 2018-19 was a year of self-reflection for the Active Schools team, having completed the Insights Personality test. Understanding others and appreciating our differences was one of the key learnings. This programme helped us build valuable working relationships and a network of partners, allowing Active Schools to make the impact they have made this year. The Active Schools team continue to work with and nurture senior pupils who officiate, coach, organise competitions, become Young Ambassadors who are our decision makers. Gaining relevant sports qualifications and valuable experience in delivery, the young people are able to Jude Salmon develop their employability skills. Active Schools Manager In today’s world we are affected by factors including stress, mental health, obesity and poverty. Taking part in sport and physical activity truly does make a difference to our lives and I hope that some of the stories you are about to read will illustrate this to you. The phrase, ‘healthy body, healthy mind’ says it all. Our bodies were designed to move and when we keep them healthy, we have a better outlook on life, and on learning. The most wonderful part of keeping fit and healthy is that it is fun, but as this annual review shows, it can also open doors into future careers through volunteering and coaching.

As we move towards the full implementation of the new national qualifications I can confidently say that the teachers at Broughton High School will be as well prepared as any. We have been working hard to ensure that ongoing guidance from Education Scotland is accessed and acted upon. We have not forgotten about this year’s candidates, of course. Inside this issue: Those sitting the examination diet during the current session have been given every opportunity to be as well prepared as French Ski Trip 2 possible. We will soon be saying to our seniors, “Best of luck. Now it’s over to you.” Geography News 2 Life at Broughton High School is suitably varied and interesting. There is always something fantastic happening somewhere in the school, from groups of enthusiastic Primary pupils visiting their future high school to talented young musicians, dancers or footballers auditioning Library Updates 2 for a place here next year, to visiting celebrities helping to broaden the range of experiences based at Broughton. Recently, for example, we welcomed Doug Allan, the photographer and Modern Languages 3 cameraman behind many of Sir David Attenborough’s best on-screen moments. Doug, a lad from Fife, has travelled all over the world on the strength of following his interests and taking Events opportunities as they arose. He has lived his Dance Competition 3 dream. As Doug shared with our students, “someone has to do it.” We also hosted a visit from the Cabinet Secretary for Education Doug Allan’s Visit 4 Mike Russell and his Welsh counterpart Leighton Andrews.
