However, in this complicated reality, cancer continues to be the number one cause of death among adults. The fight against cancer diseases is a continuous and uncompromising one, which requires concomitant activity on several fronts: promoting research, prevention and early detection, enhancing treatment modalities and rehabilitation of cancer patients and their families, promoting patients' rights and improving their quality of life. Prof. Eliezer Robinson The ICA became a signatory to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, initiated by the UICC, Chairman, Israel Cancer Association and Immediate and continues to actively promote its targets in Israel. Many achievements have already been recorded, Immediate Past-President of the International Union against such as the reduced smoking rates, improved survival rates in diseases that may be detected at an early Cancer (UICC) stage, and so on and so on. We have continued to invest in promoting cancer research, constructing and renovating oncology departments in medical centers around the country, and we have invested tremendous efforts in conducting information and education activities to increase awareness as to the importance of early detection. Just to name a few examples, the Reuben Breast Health Center at Linn Clinic was recently inaugurated, a Laughter Room opened for children who have cancer and are admitted at Sheba Medical Center; additionally, the ICA assisted in purchasing a bone marrow cancer detection device for Bnei Zion Hospital Leon Recanati and equipment to operate the Breast Health Center at Kaplan Hospital, and the list goes on and on. Vice Chairman, Israel Cancer Association This year saw many conferences and seminars organized for patients and their families, as well as for professional staff and the general population; we succeeded in heightening public awareness of the significance of potentially life-saving early detection, and we have accomplished many achievements in various areas related to cancer diseases. Similarly, we have continued to assist cancer patients, adults, young people and children, in many diverse rehabilitation activities, and we have also endeavored to form a Knesset lobby to promote the inclusion of potentially life-saving drugs currently not included in the health care package. I would like to thank you for your loyal support. There is no doubt that your generous assistance has allowed us to see the fruits of our labor. Together we can advance the fight against cancer diseases and improve patients' quality of life, with hope for a cancer-free future. Sincerely, Prof. Eliezer Robinson Chairman, Israel Cancer Association Immediate Past-President of the International Union against Cancer (UICC) 3 Budget Distribution for the Battle against Cancer - 2009 Projected Programs 1,946 Medical and Organization, Administration and Branch Social Services Offices (over 70 branches throughout Israel) 8,086 Data Collection and 5,057 Follow-up 940 Equipment and Construction 4% 1,000 10% 17% 2% Research and Clinical Professional Protocols Training 2% 2% 3,780 1,000 8% 23% 32% Public Education and Information, Prevention and Early Rehabilitation and Detection Programs Welfare (including 10,994 Hospice and Hostel) 15,772 Appropriations In NIS Percentage Medical and Social Services 8,086 17 Data Collection and Follow-up 940 2 Research and Clinical Protocols 3,780 8 Rehabilitation and Welfare (including Hospice and Hostel) 15,772 32 Public Education and Information, Prevention and Early Detection Programs 10,994 23 Professional Training 1,000 2 Equipment and Construction 1,000 2 Organization, Administration and Branch Offices (over 70 branches throughout Israel) 5,057 10 Projected Programs 1,946 4 Total Appropriations 48,575 100 4 Annual Report 2009 Medical Services Breast Cancer Treatment Coordinators – The Welfare Service Programs – The ICA continues ICA continues to finance special posts fornurses to finance posts for social workers at the following and social workers, working as breast cancer medical centers: Schneider Children’s Medical care treatment coordinators during all stages Center of Israel, Rabin Medical Center - Belinson of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
