After a meaningful year in Israel, Douglas returned to South Africa to open and run the Betar offices in Cape Town, all the while marking time until the day of his aliyah. During the fateful 6-Day War, Douglas was sent with other Betarim to a moshav and then spent two months at Kibbutz Dafna. By this time his mind was irrevocably made up so he changed his status and settled in Israel. Having achieved the greatest ambition of his life, Douglas now turned his thoughts to serving his country and joined the Israel Army, eventually attaining the rank of officer. Douglas knew that he would not make the grade as a citizen of Israel nor become an integral part of the country without a sound knowledge of Hebrew. we gave final notice and began our preparation for aliyah. It was a tough decision, because. In all humility, we knew were leaving a gap. But there were inescapable imperatives for aliyah.

In the desperate struggle against assimilation and the attrition of Judaism, in which we were all engaged in Johannesburg, we knew we were barely holding our own, if not losing ground hardly per ceptibly but surely. We no' longer felt that we were creating a future and so our tasks began to feel increasingly repetitive. While all this was going on, Israel was struggling more and more for its existence. She was friendless, isolated and alone. She was calling for to join her. She was losing people by yeridah. There had to be a place and a task for us, in return for what Israel would give. So the will was created for aliyah, despite financial sacrifice, physical difficulties and emotional trauma of parting from dear friends who had become as close and loving as near family.
