NAPLAN Online

Students in Year 7 and 9 were among the first secondary students to participate in the online version of the national standards test NAPLAN during May. This followed last year’s trialling processes and rigorous analysis of the school’s ICT network, connectivity and student access to technology. Literacy Planet

At the end of 2017 our school participated in a trial of Literacy Planet. Literacy Planet is an Australian-developed online literacy resource for children of ages 4-15. Available for use at school and home, it offers a gamified learning platform with more than 15,000 interactive exercises, including pre-reading, phonics, sight words, reading, spelling, comprehension, and punctuation aligned to the Australian curriculum. These exercises are suitable for different paces of learning and adaptable for differentiated learning. In 2017 two Year 7 English classes had access to Literacy Planet for a period of two weeks. At the end of the trial the students and the teachers were asked to give feedback on the program, and it was resoundingly positive. We wanted a program that was educational, engaging, allowed teachers to differentiate learning for students, provided data to track and monitor progress, was easily accessible on the range of student devices, and Literacy Planet does all of this.

Literacy Planet is currently used by all Year 7 students. The students Linda Bevan are placed into the program in their English classes, and the teachers Teaching and Learning monitor the progress of each individual student. Teachers have Coordinator Leader Boards in their rooms, and students are given class rewards and certificates based on their achievement. Each fortnight the top three students are announced in the Daily Notices, this is shared with the whole school and at the end of the each term the top three Maritime Archaeology Course students overall are awarded a prize. Dunman High School Visit

We have been fortunate to visit Dunman High School during the last four Performing Arts Tours to Singapore. During these visits we have made great friendships with both staff and students. The great news is we were lucky to host Dunman High School on Monday 21 of May. We had a fun filled day that saw a number of our Performing Arts students engaging with the Singapore students. Students took a tour of the school, baked Anzac cookies, created Australian themed post cards and enjoyed a traditional Aussie BBQ complete with Vegemite tasting. By the end of the day all students had made solid friendships and exchanged social media contacts. We look forward to visiting them again next year in Singapore. A huge thank you to all staff and students that helped to make this day a huge success. If you would like to take a look at Dunman High School, please control click the following: Dunman High School

Music

The Music department had a very busy Term 2. Our upper school students had the amazing opportunity to go to Sumo Studios, a professional recording studio, where they were given the opportunity to record their very own songs. The experience was absolutely amazing and students were in awe of the experience. The tracks sound absolutely amazing and were a further demonstration of the endless talent on show at Ocean Reef Senior High School!

We had a special guest in our classroom this term. Premier Mark McGowan came to see our Performing Arts students and confirmed that we will be receiving a $5,000,000 Performing Arts Centre to open Kate Thumwood in 2020. He was thoroughly impressed by our Senior School student’s Music Teacher talent and their original songs. Some of the members of the official party even asked to come and watch our production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. Boys eye off back to back AFL finals

Our Year 8 and 9 boys have started another AFL season well. With wins over St Stephens and Yanchep the boys followed up with a narrow 10 point loss to Belridge. In a tougher division this year Ocean Reef has been able to build its reputation as a competitive AFL school. With a building squad of 34 students we have not had to turn to any eager year 7’s to build numbers. Jye, Callum and Ashton have oozed quality through the midfield whilst the likes of Jaxon, Kobi, Taj and Beau have provided the grunt to put us in winning positions. Year 7 & 8 Reward Disco

At the end of Term One Year 7 and 8 students were invited to attend a Reward Excursion which was a Disco held in the school Performing Arts Theatre. Students were eligible to attend if they were consistently demonstrating the ORCA Values of the School, had an attendance of 85% or more and had their Good Standing.

We had 95 students attend on the evening and were lucky enough to have two of our very talented school bands perform for us. There were a few games on the night, limbo being the highlight and after some sugary snacks, popcorn and pizza the students were ready to dance the night away. The Reward Excursions are a great incentive for students to aim for at the end of each term and we hope to see even more students at the next one.

Harmony Day – Wednesday 21 March

Australia is one of the most multicultural countries on earth.

other’s cultures and backgrounds whilst enjoying some tasty multicultural food from various food trucks that were invited to celebrate with our school community. Students were encouraged to wear the colour ‘ORANGE’ which is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Many of our students and staff chose to wear something orange on 21 March to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

The local City of Joondalup Youth Truck had access to our ovals every fortnight during lunchtimes for the students to pop their heads in for a chat with the lovely Youth Workers. The boys in particular were a little distracted by the computers games on board whilst others used the opportunity to just ‘hang’ with their friends and listen to music.

The World’s Greatest Shave 2018

On Friday March 16 Ocean Reef SHS once again took part in the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation. The Greatest Shave event took place during lunch break in the great court. The atmosphere was great with many staff and students witnessing this wonderful and funny event. We had the shaving but also hair spray stations and live music performances from our talented music students.

Probably my favourite thing about Ocean Reef SHS is how tremendously inspiring our students are. This year we again had some brilliant, young people that were brave enough to shave. They are a shining example of doing something with a generous spirit without expectation.

Our brave team this year was:

 Ben Humphries  Douglas Rooke  Matt Bartlett (Chaplain)  Kobi Smith

Thank you to our lovely hairdressers Ceri Sheppard and Tanya Honor.

We greatly appreciate you generously giving your time to support of school for this event.

This year we raised a grand total of $3,807.70. We greatly appreciate all donations, thank you!

Senior School Lunchtime activities

Whilst the weather has been warm and sunny, many students and staff have been embracing the outdoor activities on offer. Volleyball on the great court has been a popular weekly event. In term 1, we also held Staff vs Students Volleyball and netball matches. The grudge matches sparked plenty of interest and spectators. Thank you to all the staff and students that were involved in these events. The new sport on the block that’s made its debut on the Ocean Reef SHS scene is “Spike Ball”. Thanks to Matt Bartlett for finding another quirky Year 11 & 12 Movie Night game for students to enjoy and fostering a positive atmosphere Our Year 11 & 12 term 1 reward excursion was held on the evening of with his enthusiasm. Tuesday 10 April. We hosted an outdoor movie, under the stars. Students came with their picnic blankets and snuggled up to watch the movie “Thor- Ragnarok”. We enjoyed a lovely clear evening, after a very rainy afternoon! The students all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and commented on what a brilliant night they had. On behalf of Ocean Reef SHS, I want to thank the team at Beaumaris Community Baptist Church for generously providing the outdoor movie setup and making our movie night a great success. Thank you to Matt Bartlett, Mr Tomlinson and Mrs Novotny for assisting and supervising for the evening.

During term 2 we held the staff vs students soccer match with our Year 10’s. I’m proud and pleased to announce the staff took out the victory to win the match.

Year 10 Inflatable World excursion

Our enthusiastic Year 10’s were keen to burn some excess energy at the super Bouncy – Inflatable World venue.

Students showcased their jumping skills and some provided plenty of entertainment trying! This cohort of students conducted themselves respectfully and have some impressive photos to prove the joy they experienced on the day!

ORCA reward Pop up Café

Fortnightly Mrs D’Angelo has been running a “pop up café” for all senior school students on the great court. The students are awarded the opportunity to trade in their ORCA awards for food and drinks. This event has proved to be very popular and we are pleased to reward the positive values of being Organised, Respectful, Caring and Achieving.

In week 4 of Term 2, we held a special Year 10 hot chocolate reward café. It was great to see the students being rewarded for their positive behaviour. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability provides Australian schools, parents, education authorities and the community with information about the number of students with disability in schools, the level of support and the adjustments they receive. The national data collection on students with disability reinforces the existing obligations that schools have towards students under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. It counts the number of students who are supported under these obligations based on the professional judgement of teachers and their understanding and knowledge of their students. This NCCD document here provides the answers to commonly asked questions about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. If you have any further questions, please contact the Teaching and Learning UPCOMING EVENTS Coordinator at the school.
