Aberfoyle Park High School Newsletter Aberfoyle Park Newsletter High School Taylors Road East, Aberfoyle Park 5159 Phone: 8270 4455 Email: [email protected] Website: www.aphs.sa.edu.au Issue 1, Februar19Issue 9 FROM THE PRINCIPAL CRICOS Provider No. 00018A MARION COADY As we start the third term of 2019 it is clear this will be filled with students undertaking their continued learning as well as opportunities to expand their learning. Some of our subjects which have a performance component move towards completion and we will see our senior students drama production and annual Elder Hall music evening. Five of our students returned safely from their travel to Fiji having worked alongside scientists in the field studying unique terrestrial and marine life. Shortly a group of our students will travel to the snow to undertake an outdoor experience skiing and snowboarding. I have no doubt that the students will return from this trip exhausted as their days are filled with intensive physical activity. We have welcomed some new staff to our school. They include: • Mr Lee Pope who has taken up the position of Business Leader working as member of the Executive team and leading the support services staff. • Ms Vanessa Crane – teacher. • Mr Kerry Pinchbeck – teacher. • Ms Jessica Searle – teacher. Term 3 sees not only the continuance of the learning programs, it heralds the commencement of significant planning for the 2020 school year. Over the next few weeks we will be working with students and families regarding the course counselling process. In addition to the communication sent home at the beginning of the term, information has been included in this newsletter. I would invite any parents and caregivers to contact the school if you require further information. Our international connections continued with the arrival of 16 Kyoto Board of Education students on Sunday 28 July. Thank you to our families who have taken on the responsibility of hosting our Japanese visitors. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our year 12 students and their partners for their exemplary behavior at the year 12 Formal held towards the end of Term 2. Their respect for each other, conduct in the venue and interactions with each other were exemplary whilst having a great time. This term will see a whole school assembly on 7 August where we will be publically acknowledging our students’ achievements. Issue 5, July 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School Page 1 We are currently finalising the redevelopment of the school through the Capital Works funding. It is intended that the 2D and 3D designs will be on display in the Hub Community Library once all plans have been finalised. A reminder also that we have a School Closure Day on Monday 2 September and a Student Free Day on Tuesday 3 September. 2019 STUDENT EXCHANGE Applications for Nacel Australasia’s short term 4, 10 week Language and Cultural Student Exchanges to France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Canada close on 30 August 2019. Students can improve their language skills, experience a new culture and grow their confidence as they spend Christmas in Europe or Canada and make friends for life with their host family. MARION COADY PRINCIPAL ICAS COMPETITIONS 2019 In 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School will once again be participating in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science, Mathematics and Digital Technologies competitions. Over the last 30 years, ICAS has taken place each year in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. It provides the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding in science across five skills areas: observing/measuring, interpreting, predicting/concluding, investigating and reasoning/problem solving. All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly along with their overall level of achievement. These competitions are excellent preparation for tests and examinations requiring students to work independently and concentrate for a sustained period of time. The student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and areas in need of development. The certificate and individual student report are suitable for your child to include in a portfolio. For more information on either of these competitions, including online practice tests, visit the Educational Assessments Australia website at www.eaa.unsw.edu.au. The competitions will be held on the following dates: • ICAS Digital Technologies (Years 8-10) – 2 September- 4 September • ICAS Science (Years 8-12) – 4 September - 6 September • ICAS Mathematics (Years 8-12) – 19 September – 20 September If you would like any further information or would like to register your child for any of these competitions please contact me either by phoning the school or by email: [email protected] JARROD CHAVE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Issue 5, July 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School Page 3 CALENDAR DATES Term 3 2019 6.30pm-7.30pm Year 8 & 1st Year IGNITE International Baccalaureate Diploma Thursday 01/08/2019 Program – Parent Information Evening Tuesday 06/08/2019 Year 10 Immunisations Tuesday 13/08/2019 Year 11 Immunisations Tuesday 13/08/2018 7.00pm Governing Council Friday 16/08/2019 9.00am Principal Tour Wednesday 21/08/2019 11.00am-7.30pm Year 10 & 2nd Year IGNITE Course Counselling Thursday 22/08/2019 11.00am-7.30pm Year 11, 3rd & 4th Year IGNITE Course Counselling Wednesday & 28/08/2019 & 7.00pm Stage 1 & 2 Drama Group Production Thursday 29/08/2019 Monday 02/09/2019 School Closure Day Tuesday 03/09/2019 Student Free Day Tuesday 03/09/2019 5.30pm Finance Meeting Wednesday 04/09/2019 6.30pm-7.30pm Year 12 Prep for Parents & Caregivers (Year 11’s) Thursday 05/09/2019 6.30pm-7.30pm SATAC Parent/Student Evening Monday 09/09/2019 9.00am Principal Tour Tuesday 10/09/2019 7.00pm Governing Council Wednesday 11/09/2019 7.00pm Music Showcase Elder Hall, Uni of Adelaide – Year 8, 9, 10 & 11 Wednesday 11/09/2019 6.30pm-7.30pm Year 12 Prep for Parents & Caregivers (Year 11’s) Wednesday 18/09/2019 6.30pm-7.30pm Year 12 Prep for Parents & Caregivers (Year 11’s) Thursday 19/09/2019 7.00pm Year 9 Drama Group Production Thursday 19/09/2019 Casual Day for Student Voice – Kickstart for Kids Tuesday 24/09/2019 3.00pm-7.00pm Year 8-11 Parent/Teacher Interviews Friday 27/09/2019 Term 3 concludes: 2.15pm dismissal Term 4 2019 Tuesday 22/10/2019 9.00am Principal Tour Thursday 24/10/2019 3.30pm-4.00pm SACE Stage 1 & 2 Community Studies Exhibition Tuesday 29/10/2019 5.30pm Finance Meeting Tuesday 05/11/2019 7.00pm Governing Council Tuesday 12/11/2019 9.00am Principal Tour Thursday 14/11/2019 7.00pm Year 10 Drama Group Production Friday 22/11/2019 Year 12 Orientation Day (Year 11 and 4th Year IGNITE students) Monday 25/11/2019 7.30pm Junior Band Night – Years 8, 9 & 10 Tuesday 26/11/2019 5.30pm Finance Meeting Wednesday 27/11/2019 6.00pm Senior School Awards & Presentation Night, Adelaide Town Hall Tuesday 03/12/2019 Year 8 Immunisations Tuesday 03/12/2019 7.00pm Governing Council Friday 13/12/2019 Term 4 concludes: 2.15pm dismissal Issue 5, July 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School Page 4 COURSE COUNSELLING AND SUBJECT SELECTION FOR 2020 The important process of course counselling and subject selection for 2020 is continuing during term 3 for all current year 8 to 11 and 1st to 4th year IGNITE students.

  • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

  • What a Start to the Year for Swan
CHAMPION/DATA/ISSUE 2 Hi and welcome to the second edition of the Fantasy Freako’s rave for 2011. Regardless of how you’re faring after two rounds, this is the week to offload the underperformers and snap up those boom cash cows. If you’ve nailed your side and have all cash cows playing and performing well, then there’s no need to trade just for the sake of it. Conserve your trades and use them only when needed. Good luck to all coaches for the upcoming round, as it will be the last head-to-head round for three weeks. WHAT A START TO THE YEAR FOR SWAN If you took the captain’s arm band off Dane Swan last week, then you would have felt sick in the guts when he came out an racked up a lazy 18 disposals in the second term against the Kangaroos – the most ever recorded in a second quarter. If you were playing against him, you would have felt even worse. His start to the season has been remarkable, collecting 34 and 40 disposals from his first two games, scoring 137 and 162 points respectively. This gives you an average of 149 points per match and we have to go back to 1989 to find a more productive Dream Team start to the year. That year big Tony Lockett let loose, scoring nine goals and 153 points in Round 1 against the Brisbane Bears and he followed it up with another 10 goals and 160 points the following week against Carlton.
