I’m sure I’m not the only one who is relieved that the long, hot summer is now over. And, aside from the cooler weather, the best thing about autumn is that it heralds the start of yet another footy season… and another season of WAFL Collectables. Two very rare 1956 Darbyshire figurines, which have previously featured in this column, came up for auction over the break and attracted plenty of interest. Modelled on cartoonist Paul Rigby’s famous urchin, they are always sought after by collectors of both football memorabilia and Darbyshire (a WA-based pottery). An East Perth urchin, which had clearly had its head snapped off and glued back on at some stage, fetched an auction price of $713.91. Meanwhile, a South Fremantle urchin in excellent condition sold for around $1000. And the urchins weren’t the only figurines to appear.
