02 www.vfl .com.au Multicultural Round a chance to celebrate diversity At AFL Victoria we are incredibly proud of football’s capacity to break down barriers between diff erent sections of the community. We believe football has a place for everyone. It unites communities and brings people from all walks of life together to support a common cause. Multicultural Round is the perfect time to celebrate this but also a reminder that we must continue to be a leader in this regard and be a vehicle to promote understanding between diff erent community groups. Our multicultural team at AFL Victoria do a huge amount of work in engaging our state’s many diverse communities and introducing them to ’s game. The nation’s multicultural population is already signifi cantly large but is predicted to grow substantially over the next 20 years, making the work of this team vitally important. Harnessing this population growth and encouraging participation in our traditional and new football programs is without doubt one of the biggest challenges we face as a sport. NAB Auskick clinics designed especially for diverse communities are already in place in a number of regions, and we also operate school programs and have a number of other special events scheduled across the year to engage people from a multicultural background. A key plank in our programs is the four diversity academies that are helping fast-track the development of talented young multicultural footballers. Essendon’s David Zaharakis, Geelong’s Stevie Motlop and Melbourne’s each headed up their own diversity academy this year with fantastic results. The Academies, based at the Northern Knights, Geelong Falcons and Dandenong Stingrays, have seen a hand-picked squad come together once a week for 10 weeks to complete training and education sessions and a personalised development program. While each Academy has its own head coach, the three AFL stars are a tremendous addition and have each aligned themselves to a specifi c squad to help mentor the talented youngsters. A fourth academy based at the has already been in operation for three years and is again providing opportunities for indigenous and multicultural youngsters this season. A fi ft h academy will be announced at in coming weeks. The vast majority of participants in these academies missed out on Auskick or playing football as youngsters, so this program provides extra training and coaching, respected mentors and an off -fi eld curriculum that will hopefully see them transition into the mainstream talent pathway and possibly become future role models for the wider multicultural community. 10 www.vfl .com.au Day of milestones for Frankston Frankston captain Shane Hockey will play his 100th Peter Jackson VFL match this Sunday against Coburg at Frankston Oval, on the same day the club News celebrates 50 years in the VFA/VFL. 27-year-old Hockey won the Dolphins’ 2013 best-and-fairest award and is in his fi rst season as captain. Frankston 100-gamer Shane Hockey The 177cm midfi elder from Mornington has been remarkably consistent across his six years at Frankston, missing only six matches since the start of the 2010 season. Hockey has been involved in only 15 wins and two draws during his 99 games played, but has remained loyal to the club that gave him a chance when Simon Goosey took the reins as coach in 2010. The Dolphins have further reason to celebrate on Sunday, with the club recognising the 50th anniversary of its entrance into the VFA/VFL in 1966. Frankston won a second-division premiership in 1978 and fi nished runner-up in the 1984, 1996 and 1997 seasons. It boasts three J. J. Liston Trophy winners – Peter Geddes (1984), John Georgiou (1999) and Aaron Edwards (2006) – and two ‘Frosty’ Miller Medallists for most goals kicked in a season – Nicholas Sautner (2001 and 2002) and Aaron Edwards (2006). Former AFL star David Rhys-Jones coached Frankston between 1996 and 1998, while Brett Lovett was the club’s longest-serving coach, taking charge for six years between 2003 and 2008. Michael Ablett won a club record four best-and-fairest awards between 2002 and 2005 (two as a joint-winner), and the Dolphins have also produced several high-profi le AFL draft ees in recent years. Western Bulldogs champion Matthew Boyd is the most high- profi le of these, while Essendon defenders and have gone on to play over 50 games at the top level aft er spending time at Frankston Oval.

Sandringham will have to defeat the Western Jets, and Eastern Ranges in the fi nal home-and-away round to be any chance of snatching the fi nal top-eight position. The club’s clash with Gippsland could be crucial, as the Power is even on points with Calder in seventh and due to its strong percentage, would only need one more win against the North Ballarat Rebels, Dragons or Northern Knights to seal its own place in the fi nals. Sandringham was jumped early by Dandenong at Frankston Oval, conceding fi ve goals to one in the fi rst term to have themselves on the back foot from the get-go. The Dragons won the second and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the strong Stingrays, who consolidated second place with a 19-point victory. 200 up for Selwood and Dempster representing Vic Geelong captain and triple premiership player Joel Country in 2010 Selwood will celebrate his 200-game milestone on Saturday night when the Cats host Sydney at Simonds Stadium. 27-year-old Selwood, an ex-Bendigo Pioneer, has become known as one the game’s toughest and most respected midfi elders since being taken with pick no.7 in the 2006 AFL Draft . The Sandhurst junior made an instant impact in his fi rst season in the AFL, winning the 2007 NAB Rising Star award and playing an integral part in Geelong’s drought- breaking premiership victory over Port Adelaide. He has gone on to claim two more fl ags with the club in 2009 and 2011, was named in the All Australian team in 2009, 2010, 2013 (as captain) and 2014 (as captain), and took out the Cats’ best-and-fairest award in 2010, 2013 and 2014. To illustrate the regard in which he is held by his peers, Selwood was voted as the AFL Players’ Association’s most courageous player in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Former Gippsland Power player Sean Dempster will also chalk up his 200th match when St Kilda faces Fremantle at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The 31-year-old played in Sydney’s 2005 premiership aft er originally being selected by the Swans with pick no.34 in the 2002 Draft . Aft er 54 games in the harbour city, the versatile defender crossed to the Saints aft er the 2007 season and was named an All Australian in 2012. Milestones for young guns Sydney young gun and ex-Dandenong Stingray Luke Parker will play his 100th match when the Swans meet Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Saturday night. The 22-year-old was taken at pick no.40 in the 2010 AFL Draft and aft er playing in Sydney’s 2012 premiership as the starting substitute, has rapidly emerged as one of the best young goalkicking midfi elders in the game – winning the Swans’ 2014 best-and-fairest award at the age of 21. Ex-Oakleigh Charger notches his 50th game when the Western Bulldogs take on Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The no.6 pick at the 2012 Draft , the 21-year-old has emerged as an elite uncontested-possession-winning midfi elder over the last two seasons, fi nishing second in the Bulldogs’ 2014 best-and-fairest award. Melbourne’s , another former Oakleigh Charger, will also bring up his 50th match when the Demons clash with North Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday. The 22-year-old was originally selected by GWS with pick Joel Selwood in no.3 in the 2011 Draft , playing 13 games with the Giants action for the Bendigo before being traded to Melbourne at the end of the 2013 Pioneers in 2005 season and subsequently placing second in the Demons’ 2014 best-and-fairest award.
