whether he will retain the role for next season when the Black Swans travel to South Australia. \\ Haiden Schloithe Photo: Gary Day He will discuss the matter with the WA Football Commission later in the year. But Broadbridge has naturally supported an independent coach, not necessarily the reigning premiership coach, taking on the interstate program. South Australia favours implementing its flag-winning mentor in the top job with former Fremantle midfielder Josh Carr, who led North Adelaide to the SANFL trophy last season, at the helm last weekend. Broadbridge guided the WAFL to the first win by a WA team over Victoria in Melbourne during the 2017 season and last year ended a 24-year drought in Adelaide when the Black Swans defeated the Croweaters. However, now the Sandgropers have had to handover to South Australia the Haydn Bunton Jnr Cup, named in recognition of the player and coach who had great football successes in both States. The WAFL and the SANFL are the only competitions still engaging in interstate competition. The VFL withdrew two years ago and the Tasmanian, New South Wales and NEAFL leagues lost interest after heavy losses.

Journeyman reaches magical mark

It has taken three clubs and 11 seasons but South Fremantle’s Blayne Wilson will this round notch a milestone cherished by all WAFL players. The 27-year-old defender will play his 150th WAFL match when he runs out for the battle with league-leaders Subiaco. Wilson, originally from Halls Head, was a member of WA’s 16s and 18s academies and made his debut with Peel in 2009. He graduated to West Coast’s list after being the second selection in the 2011 AFL pre-season draft. Ankle injuries and the adjustment of eventually having to move from Peel to the Eagles’ aligned club, East Perth, restricted Wilson to nine AFL matches in four seasons. He was delisted in 2014 and made the move to South Fremantle to rekindle his enthusiasm for the game. And he has certainly done that, becoming a mainstay of the Bulldogs backline. Wilson played 36 matches for Peel (2009- 2012), 29 with East Perth (2013-14) and has lined up 84 times for South Fremantle since 2015. He also played a State match for the WAFL against SANFL in 2015.
