I was born and bred “I am a proud Noongar person, with strong in WA and play football for the West Coast cultural beliefs that were passed on to me Eagles.     Issue 9, December 2013 Football update Melbourne Football Club CEO Peter Jackson has reiterated the importance of a strong football program in the rebuild of the Club. One aspect of this has been the bolstering of our recruiting. All players have now returned to training, with the five year-plus players commencing on November 18. The trade and draft periods have delivered a number of new players to the Club. Manager of football operations Josh Mahoney summarised Melbourne’s recruiting period: “Over the past two months, we have been able to combine a trade period where we added inside midfield depth and experience, with skill and speed in the draft. Christian Salem, who was rated highly internally, combines hardness and skill. We have been able to bring in both Dom Tyson and Salem for pick No.2. Jay Kennedy-Harris is a small, quick player who captained his under 18 TAC Cup team and meets a definite need on our list. Jayden Hunt was a talented junior player before taking up tennis. He returned to football this year and has shown AFL traits with his decision- making and marking. He will also compete with Sam Blease as our quickest player. Jayden will be a project player for our academy and we believe he will be a future top line player.” In last Wednesday’s Rookie Draft, the Club added James Harmes (Dandenong Stingrays, 18, 185cm, 78kg, midfielder), Alex Georgiou (Norwood, 23, 188cm, 93kg) and Max King (Murray Bushrangers, 18, 201cm, 90kg, tall forward/ruckman) to its list. The inaugural best-and-fairest award for the new women’s competition will be presented at the same event as the J. J. Liston Trophy for the best player in the VFL for the first time. This historic night will acknowledge the most talented players across both state league competitions, with the Rising Stars, leading goalkickers and Team of the Year selections announced. A number of the players in contention for Monday night’s honours will take to the field in finals this weekend as our competitions combine at North Port Oval. On Sunday, a double-header will feature the Preliminary Final in the VFL Women’s competition, with St Kilda Sharks facing Melbourne Uni and the winner to meet Darebin in the first VFL Women’s Grand Final at Coburg on September 18. The teams will feature a host of AFL-listed players, including century goalkicker and Collingwood marquee player Moana Hope, Brianna Davey (Carlton marquee) and Ellie Blackburn (Western Bulldogs marquee).
