What Lower didn’t what to happen this season is to hear the same tired, well-worn lines and excuses about it being Footscray’s fi rst year in the VFL. Lower was keen for the Bulldogs to impact the VFL from the get-go. “I was always keen to make it a success from day dot,” said Lower, co-captain of Footscray and a key component of the team’s strong debut. “I didn’t want to wait around and have people say ‘oh, it’s only Footscray’s fi rst year in the competition, give them time and they will be good’. “I wanted us to be a strong team right from the start.” While they thumped Richmond in their fi rst game of the season, Footscray showed inconsistency, dropping a match against North Ballarat and copping some telling losses against Williamstown and Northern Blues. As the season has progressed though, Footscray has emerged not only as a genuine fi nalist, but a legitimate premiership contender. Certainly, that scenario was reinforced when Footscray “While it was disappointing to be delisted I see the came away from a trip to Port Melbourne with a thumping opportunity of growth there and to still stay involved with win against a quality Borough team. a lot of the young guys that I had a lot to do with was another factor in staying,” Lower said. While nothing eventuated for him at the AFL level, Wilson was happy to try his chances in the VFL and trained with the VFL Hawks. Four seasons later, Wilson has no reason to second guess his decision to join the VFL Blues. Wilson has become one of the few VFL players to cement a regular spot with Northern Blues and become a consistent contributor. Just two years ago the lanky Tasmanian was representing the Tasmanian State League against the VFL. In that game he caught the eye of then Werribee recruiter Mark Stone, who was instantly drawn to Brown’s athletic ability below his knees for a player 199cms tall. When Stone contacted him about a move to the VFL, the time was right for Brown to cross Bass Strait and follow his dream of an AFL career. After a season playing for Werribee, the Tigers AFL affi liate North Melbourne saw enough in the 21 year old to draft him at pick 47 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft. Last Sunday Brown made his AFL debut, kicking his fi rst AFL goal along with eight disposals, fi ve marks and more importantly 100% effi ciency, completing what has been a long journey for Brown. “I had it in my head that I wanted to play AFL football, and thought I had the capability to do it. “It was probably the thing that made me look at moving (to Werribee) in the fi rst place. Once I got to Werribee it was about enjoying my football and trying to improve in every way I could,” Brown said. While it seems like a quick move through the ranks, Brown had to overcome initial disappointment at not reaching his AFL dream. “I missed out on three successive drafts when I was a 17/18 year old. The charter is part of a program that aims to counter the growing culture of gambling in clubs by encouraging and supporting responsible and healthy club environments. The aims of the program include helping clubs preserve the essence of their sport by separating gambling from sports, shifting the focus back to the ‘love of the game’ not the odds, and raising awareness of Gambler’s Help services. The program also provides guidelines and education sessions about responsible gambling to clubs. The charter has been developed to help clubs take a Responsible Gambling Ambassador Daniel Ward talking to VFL players responsible approach to gambling.
