INTRODUCTION
The Central District Football Club is a proud organisation and following yet another successful year has again experienced success at the top level, residing at the top of the premiership table for the ninth time over the last eleven seasons. The club has also recorded its fourth straight premiership win, which alone stands as another club record.
The Central District Football Club has also experienced another successful year off the field, establishing a solid foundation of programs reaching out into the CDFC community. Last year the Central District Football Club Development Team worked with many schools and junior clubs in the metropolitan and Barossa Light and Gawler regions, all with the aim of increasing football based involvement and identifying healthy lifestyle choices amongst our junior schools and clubs. The club also saw in excess of over 1,200 Auskick participants in a variety of clinics throughout the year. As an organisation we recognise the potential football has to offer in reaching out to this younger population and again aspire to reach out to as many schools and junior clubs as possible in 2011.
The Central District Football Club has been successful over a long period of time and acknowledges this is largely due to the development of junior footballers within the CDFC zone. The club is also highly motivated toward acknowledging and developing young local talent in an attempt to fast-track young talented footballers to represent Central District Football Club at a league or reserve level.
The club runs various programs throughout the year, all of which will be discussed in this booklet. Our main aim is to develop young footballers, raise the awareness of football in the Central District community and to increase participation across all age groups. All of our junior schooling and Auskick programs heavily encourage the involvement of both boys and girls, parents and teachers.
I have personally taken over the role of Development Officer from Chad O’Sullivan, who has done an outstanding job over the last three years. On behalf of the entire Central District Football Club I look forward to speaking with your School or Club representative and sharing some of the CDFC experience.
If you require any information on anything in this booklet please don’t hesitate to contact any of the CDFC Development Staff.
Sincerely,
Alan Obst Trent Goodrem

‘TOP DOGS’ PROGRAM
Introduction:
The HomeStart Finance Top Dogs program has seen the development of a football based initiative from the CDFC expand into a quality healthy lifestyle and football educational program amongst local schools in our local district. Local schools have shown great interest and support for this program, along with the sponsor HomeStart Finance, who have been involved in the establishment since 2006.
As part of this program, CDFC players will visit schools and help educate children on fitness components and the importance of nutrition in a fun and friendly environment. The program has been designed to encourage the youth of the community to live active and healthy lifestyles.
This initiative has come about due to dramatic increase in childhood obesity Australia wide. Current secular trends show a significant increase in childhood obesity with the condition now affecting roughly one in five Australian children and is now represented as an epidemic.
Obvious factors concerning this increase in childhood obesity include food choices, lack of Physical Activity, increases in sedentary pursuits, and genetics. These very factors are becoming problems in our very own local Northern Suburbs Community. This community has supported the Central District Football Club, so loyally and passionately over the years, helping us to become a highly respected, successful, and well followed organization and the Club would like to show our appreciation of the on-going support by offering our knowledge, experience and expertise to give back to the local community.
Our Aim:
The on-field success of the Central District Football Club this decade has been a result of our players’ willingness to adopt a lifestyle that incorporates a high level of fitness, discipline, passion, determination, sacrifice and health. The players involved in the ‘Top Dogs’ Program will hopefully be great role models for the students, whilst sharing their experiences and providing wonderful examples for the kids to follow and learn from on a range of health and football topics. Our aim is to offer assistance yet encourage all students to take responsibility for their own physical, mental and emotional health as well as their own actions and making good decisions/choices in life.
From past experiences, you’ll often find that the players visiting your school will leave long lasting impression on these students especially as the information is coming from outside the school’s/staff environment and is coming from a source that hopefully all the kids can identify/relate to in some way.
Our Program:
The program will run for six consecutive weeks. We believe that in seeing the same students each week the forty five minute session will in turn become more interactive and interpersonal and help build stronger lasting relationships with the children. The target year levels for the ‘Top Dogs’ program are primary school students in year 6/7 with a maximum of two classes, however the program is flexible to suit individual school needs.
Please note: As the CDFC official/presenter to children ration will often not be favourable we advise to all classroom teachers involved in the program to be present at all times and assist the presenter. This is primarily optimal in disciplining individual behaviours when they may be negatively affecting the experience of the classroom as the presenter will not be able to alter their session plan around such issues.
A WIN – WIN SITUATION
We look forward to the challenge ahead of us and are hopeful that your school will take part in the Top Dogs program in 2011. This is a cost free initiative, which will guarantee student participation and enjoyment whilst hopefully using the image of our bulldog senior players to help educate and better the lives of our young supporters.
If this program sounds appealing to you and you think it may be of benefit to your school, or to receive more information including a detailed week by week breakdown of the program please don’t hesitate to contact either Alan or Trent at the Football Club on (08) 8255 2555.
Note: For a limited number of schools an added option includes a school excursion to the Central District Football Club. The session will include a tour of the elite facilities (changrooms, gym, pool), plus a light gym circuit and skills session on Playford Alive Oval. If undertaken this option will replace the activities day planned in WEEK 5.
LONG BOMB & COMPETITION
Above: Young champion enjoying a Long Bomb!
COMPETITION INFORMATION
Long Bomb and Kick to Kick competitions are conducted in Primary Schools with the aim at encouraging students to practice kicking a football. These competitions are an enjoyable way of introducing and improving basic kicking skills of children through increased practice and exposure to Australian Football. This competition is based on participation, learning and having fun whilst outstanding performances by some individuals are rewarded. The competition is for boys & girls in year 4-7.
THE ROAD TO THE ZONE GRAND FINAL
In 2011 the Central District Development Team have set up a program where the development staff will come out and run the 1st session & teach the participants how the competitions work as well as teaching them the proper kicking technique. The schools may then borrow a resource kit from centrals to run their own practices sessions that are already set out for them in a sessions booklet.
This competition can be run during lunch time, as a part of the school sports curriculum or even after school. Notification of the individual winners at the school must be sent to the CDFC Development Officer on the results sheet provided so preparations for the Zone Grand Final can be made. The final will be held at Playford Alive Oval on Tuesday 23rd of August.
LONG BOMB
The Long Bomb event requires participants to kick the football as far as possible within a 20 metre corridor. The distance is judged by where the ball lands and the winner is the participant with the kick landing the furthest distance from the kicking line. KICK TO KICK
The Kick to Kick event requires participants to kick the ball with a partner back and forth over a set distance for a period of five minutes. The pair with the highest number of successful kicks at the end of that time is declared the winner. A successful kick is deemed one that is marked on the full behind the line.
9A-Side Football Carnivals
Nine A Side Football Carnivals are conducted around our Central District Zone. They are there for schools who want to compete in a one off carnival day. Secondary Schools can enter teams in open boys, year 8 & 9 boys and girls divisions to compete against other Schools from within our zone. These carnivals take place in term 2 & 3 of the school year.
Northern Zone 9 A-Side Football Carnivals dates for 2011: Open Boys 9 A-Side Football – Tuesday 5th July - Ridley Reserve Yr 8/9 boys and Girls 9 A-Side Football- Wednesday 29th June – Ridley Reserve
Country Zone 9 A-Side Football Carnivals dates for 2011: Year 6/7 Boys & Year 6/7 Girls Barossa & Light PS – Wednesday 21st September – Nuriootpa Oval
The main purpose of 9 A-Side Football Carnivals are: Provide students with an alternative style of football match Encourage students who don’t play for a Club to play for their School in a structured friendly environment. To promote football in Secondary Schools To create a link between the Schools and Central District Football Club.

AFL Recreational Football
The game of recreational football is a non-contact version of football with modified rules designed to make the game of football more accessible to all.
In School recreational football is a great way to get children participating in football. The program is generally run during school lesson times once a week for six weeks. The Central District Football Club provide all the coaches and equipment and can generally cater for groups of up to 30 children at a time. Sessions usually go for around 45 minutes but can be altered to fit in with schools timetables.
Recreational football is for both boys & girls and aimed at year levels 5,6,7,8 & 9.
For more information on Recreational football, contact the development staff at centrals on 8255 2555.
Centrals Midweek Footy
For many different reasons a lot of promising young footballers don’t get the opportunity to play on weekends and be a part of a team. Midweek Football gives those kids and other interested students the opportunity to represent their School for an hour each week for a minimum of six weeks against other local Schools.
The Central District Football Club will continue to run its Midweek Football competitions in 2011. A modified rules round robin competition will be run in Term 2 at Playford Alive Oval (Elizabeth Oval) for year 6/7 & term 3 for the year 4/5 student. Midweek footy is a 12 a side competition run on a Wednesday from 1pm during term 2 & 3. Central District players will run the competition including the administration work, setting up the fields, supplying all the equipment & also umpiring the games. There is no cost to be involved, but schools will need to make their own way to and from the ground as well as having a teacher or parent present during the games. Schools will also receive centrals giveaways at the completion of the competition.
Starting on Friday 13th May at 1.00pm
Gawler 2/3 Competition
This competition is a great opportunity for kids to be introduced into a game situation in a safe environment. The competition encourages every participant to get a go in all positions & focus on everyone getting a kick & a handball rather than winning.
The proposed date for the competition is Friday 12th August between 1.45pm and 3.00pm, the competition will run for six weeks.
Each school will need to have a teacher/parent present to satisfy the school requirements in regard to supervising children. All equipment is supplied by the SANFL/CDFC including League players to umpire the matches.

ZONING RULES FOR PLAYERS
The SANFL has divided South Australia into 9 promotional zones. This ensures that each SANFL Club has an even share of the available players in the state. This will hopefully ensure a fair, unbiased and even playing competition. This also means that each SANFL Club is given sole responsibility for assisting local Clubs and Schools to promote Australian Rules Football throughout their respective regions.
As a player cannot play SANFL U16 football or above until they turn 15 this zoning regulation only applies to players who are applying to play for a SANFL Club from the age of 15 until the year they turn 19.
For more information or any queries regarding zoning rules for players or to receive a copy of the official CDFC zoning boundaries please contact the Football Club and we will answer any of your concerns either directly or provide a brochure detailing the zoning rules and regulation set out by the SANFL.
Common queries and concerns include:
- Zoning rules in relation to split families (i.e. two residences) - Changes of address - Options for a player who wants to play for a club in which they are not zoned.
SANFL / AFL TRANSFER FEES
Likewise affiliated League and Association Clubs shall be entitled to receive compensation for the loss of services of registered players under the following conditions.
1. Upon playing 25 League games for an SANFL Club.
2. Upon being drafted by an AFL Club, in which case the Club, League and zone shall receive some compensation
If you or your local club would like to receive more information regarding these transfer fees again please don’t hesitate to contact the Football Department at the Central District Football Club.

CDFC DEVELOPMENT SQUADS
PHILOSOPHY
The aim of the CDFC Development Squads are to recruit the best junior players from our metropolitan and country zones and to inject them into our elite football setting. CDFC development squads provide young footballers with the best possible environment to fast track their physical, mental and strategic development. Our programs provide a taste of what sacrifices are necessary in order to be successful at the elite level, whilst establishing an opportunity to work with and compete against other talented local players.
The Central District Football Club understands that many players develop at different ages and believe it is important to expose as many talented young players as possible to the programs we provide. The programs the CDFC offer are no doubt the start of the elite pathway and are a critical step for any young player striving to increase his football ability.
SELECTION OF SQUADS
At the completion of the playing season our Club Development Manager (Scott Sevens) will make contact with the year 6/7 Primary School Coaches and junior coaches from the BL &G and Metropolitan Clubs.
These local coaches are asked to submit names of players who they believe have the talent, discipline and commitment at a level high enough to be a part of our squads.
All nominated players are sent a letter to join the Development Squad in late February the following year. The Squads start training mid March and train until the end of April, when the squad numbers will be reduced.
The Under 13 and Under 14 Squads are reduced to a maximum of 25 players whilst the Under 15 Squad will run with no more than 30 players until closer to the state Under 15 Championships, which are held in the July School holidays. These reduced squads are expected to remain committed to training until the completion of all squad games.
As stated earlier, players’ physical stature and football ability develop at differing rates so any players not selected in the final squads one year may be reinvited the following year.
The Central District Football Club also recruits directly and has established a network of ‘scouts’ throughout our zone with the task of identifying any talented players that may not have been nominated by their local Clubs or Schools.
Note: The Development Squad Program is designed as a support structure for talented players. It is not designed to replace local Club or School football. This program relies on players playing for their School or local Club at least once a weekend.

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD PROGRAM 2011
Once the squads have been finalized, an Information/Presentation Evening is held to advise parents and players of the program. Again the Club is concerned at the excessive games some players may be encouraged to play. These issues along with many others are raised, and compromises are reached with the best interest of the young footballer at heart to ensure the longevity of each and every player with in respect to their football career.

ROBERT ZERELLA
CENTRAL DISTRICT FOOTBALL ACADEMY
The Robert Zerella Central District Football Club Academy has been formed with the sole aim of developing talented local footballers and giving them the best opportunity to play at a higher level.
Despite the clubs tremendous success at senior level the Central District Football Club acknowledges that an organization is only as strong as its weakest members. Unfortunately in recent years the CDFC has not generated the intended success at the U15 State Championships. The Central District Football Club places a great deal of emphasis on these Championships with the view of developing future League Footballers.
The Club faces a huge task in educating and fast tracking our Development Squad players as this is no doubt the first step in the players understanding of the work load required to be successful at a higher level.
The program has been designed to give the players a basic understanding of the Clubs game plan, an insight into the personal discipline expected, whilst increasing the football knowledge and skill level components required. The senior coaching staff has had a major influence on the program structure, subject content and the organizing of guest speakers. This provides the Academy with a solid structure and content that is in line with the Club philosophies.
The Club would like to acknowledge the generous support of Club Patron Robert Zerella, whose sponsorship of this program has made it possible. The 2011 Robert Zerella Central District Football Club Academy will commence on January 29th at the Trinity College Campus in Evanston, and will run over a 10 week period.

UNDERAGE RECRUITING PROCESS
UNDER 16 AND 18’S
The Central District Football Club aims to further develop members of its already existing Development Squads and will also introduce other outstanding local talent into the SANFL through the Under 16 and Under 18 ranks at our Club. Being involved at this level and having the support of our underage coaches David Harvey and Darren James gives local players the best chance of playing league SANFL football and/or being recruited to an AFL Club.
PHILOSOPHY The Central District Football Club has a strategic development plan for its underage players and will reward capable and consistent performances by elevating individuals to the senior team should their performance warrant promotion and they are physically capable. Our underage sides have both given playing opportunities to an excess of 50 players over the course of our previous season. All of these talented players who represented our Club are now better for the experience and are well prepared to take the next step should the opportunity arise. College and country players (who are not always available) are given equal opportunity to Club based players to represent our Football Club.
RECRUITING All local players are closely monitored during the course of a season by the Central District Junior Recruiting Committee. These officials will review player performances and judge whether players will be invited to join the preseason underage training squads. Other players whose talent has been noticed but were not invited due to limited squad numbers may be given the chance to play if they have performed well in their local competitions.
TRAINING Coaching and Training times: Tuesday and Thursday 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Pre-season training dates are November 17th – December 16th at Hamra Homes Oval. Training after Christmas will commence on January 12th and continue until the end of the football season.

In the Under 16 grade, all players who represent Central District on Saturday will be expected not to play for their Club of origin on Sunday. If a player has played less than half a game on the Saturday, they will then be given permission to play for their Club of origin on Sunday, only after consultation with Coach, Darren James.
