B Y P E T E R V O X F E A T U R E D A R T I C L E DO YOU WANT TO SING FOR FUN AND IMPROVE YOUR SINGING VOICE, BUT DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN? WELL, START WHERE YOU ARE! YOU MUST LIKE MUSIC, FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND YOU MAY HAVE SUNG ALONG TO SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS BEFORE? Pick a couple of your favourite songs – songs that you want to enjoy singing. If you enjoy something, you’re going to want to do it more often, you’ll improve quickly. It will become your passion, and won’t feel like a chore. So, learn the songs from back to front, print the lyrics out. Sing along with your favourite artist, and then sing along with the backing track. Follow your passion, and bring fun and excitement to your singing! Do not limit yourself with one genre. Be in bluegrass, rock, musical theatre, metal, RnB, classical, hip-hop, folk, trap, or whatever other genres were popular in the past and will emerge in the future — find what YOU like to sing! If you haven’t had singing lessons yet, here are a couple of tips to use at home: · Watch what your mouth is doing. · Watch some of your favourite singers live – you will learn a lot from observing other people, analysing what they are doing, and replicating it. · Breathe with your diaphragm and engage stomach muscles as you are going up higher. But the main point is just to have fun singing by yourself. And then — go and do some karaoke, open mics, or sing with a churchgroup. Sing along with your friends and in public. If you wanted to take it to the next level, I highly recommend to go and get some singing lessons, or join a choir, an amateur theatre group, or find like- minded musicians to form a band – start with a duo, you don’t even need a full band to begin with! Whatever you want to do, whatever makes you happy to sing — create your own opportunities, and find people to share them with. Take it step by step, and start right here — where you are. No one can expect prompt results overnight. But there are a few ways to make your progress easier: above all, just remember to be consistent, be patient, and enjoy the process! WT WH WE . • Slim Jim Phantom Has Secured His Place As a True Rock-N-Roll Icon. As the Legendary Drummer for the Stray Cats, Phantom, Alongsi
Slim Jim Phantom has secured his place as a true rock-n-roll icon. As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Phantom, alongside band mates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50s rock-n-roll the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression produced the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Robert Plant along the way. Born in the Brooklyn Borough of New York City, Jim grew up listening to his parents’ jazz records and by the age of ten took up the drums. Immersing himself in the art of drumming and the world of music, Jim took lessons with Mousie Alexander (who played with Benny Goodman), which included the study of jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 70s Jim was playing in bands with school friend and bassist Lee Rocker and they soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer. The rest, as they say, is history. The Stray Cats had numerous hit singles in the early 1980s, their classic album “Built for Speed” went double platinum, and their song “Rock This Town” is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of “The Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” Summer 2008 saw Jim and the Stray Cats reunite for an extensive tour of Europe. In February 2009 the band headed to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 18 years - a tour which was eagerly anticipated by Australasian fans.

  • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

Some of our subjects which have a performance component move towards completion and we will see our senior students drama production and annual Elder Hall music evening. Five of our students returned safely from their travel to Fiji having worked alongside scientists in the field studying unique terrestrial and marine life. Shortly a group of our students will travel to the snow to undertake an outdoor experience skiing and snowboarding. I have no doubt that the students will return from this trip exhausted as their days are filled with intensive physical activity. We have welcomed some new staff to our school. They include: • Mr Lee Pope who has taken up the position of Business Leader working as member of the Executive team and leading the support services staff. • Ms Vanessa Crane – teacher. • Mr Kerry Pinchbeck – teacher. • Ms Jessica Searle – teacher. Term 3 sees not only the continuance of the learning programs, it heralds the commencement of significant planning for the 2020 school year. Over the next few weeks we will be working with students and families regarding the course counselling process. In addition to the communication sent home at the beginning of the term, information has been included in this newsletter.
