New West Indian Guide Vol. 84, no. 3-4 (2010), pp. 179-223 URL: http://www.kitlv-journals.nl/index.php/nwig/index URN:NBN:NL:UI:10-1-100888 Copyright: content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License ISSN: 1382-2373 KENNETH BILBY SURVIVING SECULARIZATION: MASKING THE SPIRIT IN THE JANKUNU (JOHN CANOE) FESTIVALS OF THE CARIBBEAN In certain parts of the Americas colonized by the English and built with the labor of Africans and their descendants, the holiday season at the end of the year was once – and in some areas still is – celebrated by parading bands of masqueraders whose danced processions created an ambiguous, highly charged space of their own.1 These outdoor performances by enslaved Africans amused, mystified, and discomfited the Europeans who observed and wrote about them during the nineteenth century. The loud drumming and singing, “wild” dancing, and “extravagant” costumes topped with horned ani- mal masks and towering headdresses overloaded the senses of these white onlookers, and suggested to them something inscrutably and dangerously African, even when certain European elements could be recognized within the unfamiliar mix. Unlike the pre-Lenten Catholic carnivals that were appropri- ated and refashioned by Africans in several parts of the Americas, this was a festival created by the enslaved themselves. Over time it was accepted by the ruling whites, who came to view it as a necessary evil – a kind of safety valve through which the simmering tensions on slave plantations could be periodi- 1. Abstract Chapter One asks whether Christianity and religion have been re-defined in the Jamaican context. The definitions of spirituality and mysticism, particularly as defined by Lartey are given and reasons for using these definitions. Chapter Two examines history and the Caribbean religious experience. It analyses theory and reflects on the Caribbean difference. The role that literary forefathers and foremothers have played in defining the writers about whom my research is concerned is examined in Chapter Three, as are some of their selected works. Chapter Four reflects on the work of Lorna Goodison, asks how she has defined God whether within a Christian or African framework. In contrast Olive Senior appears to view Christianity as oppressive and this is examined in Chapter Five. -

ABSTRACT Caribbean communities in Britain are known for the high religiosity of their people, and yet as ‘popular’ as the Church appears to be, there is at the same time an over-representation of many in the criminal justice, mental health and social care systems. This thesis takes a new approach to examining the effectiveness of the Church in their lives; rather than examine its belief systems and rituals, it looks at the worship and personal experience of Baptists, the oldest inherited Christian denomination, through the lens of culture. It reveals through practices and experiences, that British Caribbean Christians continue to maintain an allegiance to inherited missionary prejudices against Caribbean culture, enforced by leaders, through a system of social stratification, resulting in self-loathing, alienation and dislocation. -

Drawing increasingly upon digital technologies and the internet to assert a sense of community even as they cultivate an austere biblical persona, adher- ents of Rastafari can be thought of as simultaneously modern and antique. Their claim to antiquity is grounded in a collectively professed African- Ethiopian identity that has not only resisted the ravages of enslavement, colonialism, and European cultural domination but is seen to transcend local differences of culture and language. Theirs is a way of life organized around theocratic principles that begin with a recognition of the divine in all peoples and as the basis of all human agency. Rastafari assert the universal relevance of these principles to the conditions of modernity even as they persistently claim social justice on behalf of all peoples of African descent exploited by colonialism and the prevailing global capitalist-imperialist system. Based on these general themes, the Rastafari movement has come to represent a large-scale cultural phenomenon that has long since burst the chains of its colonial containment in Jamaica. From the late 1960s onward it has spread throughout the Caribbean and the Central and South American rimland to the major metropoles of North America and Europe as well as to many sites on the African continent. -

THE JAMAICAN MARRONAGE, A SOCIAL PSEUDOMORPH: THE CASE OF THE ACCOMPONG MAROONS by ALICE ELIZABETH BALDWIN-JONES Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2011 8 2011 Alice Elizabeth Baldwin-Jones All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE JAMAICAN MARRONAGE, A SOCIAL PSEUDOMORPH: THE CASE OF THE ACCOMPONG MAROONS ALICE ELIZABETH BALDWIN-JONES Based on ethnography, oral history and archival research, this study examines the culture of the Accompong Maroons by focusing on the political, economic, social, religious and kinship institutions, foodways, and land history. This research demonstrates that like the South American Maroons, the Accompong Maroons differ in their ideology and symbolisms from the larger New World population. However, the Accompong Maroons have assimilated, accommodated and integrated into the state in every other aspect. As a consequence, the Accompong Maroons can only be considered maroons in name only. Today’s Accompong Maroons resemble any other rural peasant community in Jamaica. Grounded in historical analysis, the study also demonstrate that social stratification in Accompong Town results from unequal access to land and other resources, lack of economic infrastructure, and constraints on food marketeers and migration. Florida International University Course Syllabus RELIGIOUS STUDIES RLG 5384: Rasta, Vodou, Santeria Spring Semester 2015 THURS., 5:00 PM-7:40 Graham Center Room 114 Instructor: Dr Albert Kafui Wuaku Office: Room DM 309 Office Hours: Monday, (305) 348-0112 email: wuakua @fiu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This course involves a critical historical, socio-anthropological and phenomenological study of the beliefs, rituals, and significance of three Caribbean religions. These are Vodou, Santeria, the Rastafari movement, and their extensions in the United States and other parts of the globe. We will explore the historical foundations and the salient cosmologies and ritual forms of these religions and examine critically their roles in the shaping of the histories and cultures of their Caribbean communities and the extensions in the United States and other parts of the globe. The mix of political, religious, social and historical forces in shaping Caribbean societies calls for a multi-disciplinary approach in this course. Throughout the seminar, we will draw on a number of modern and post-modern socio-anthropological-political-historical-religious analytical frameworks for ideas as we seek an intellectual understanding of the relationship between religion and society in the Afro-Caribbean and migrant Afro- Caribbean communities. Pre-requisites: None COURSE REQUIREMENTS Regular attendance at seminar Three seminar presentations based on the readings. The format will be discussed in class. Final research paper on a topic to be decided after consulting with the professor.
