I thank them for always having my back and believing in my progress, for showing genuine interest and, at times, patience whenever I could not withhold my passion for this research, and for providing their unconditional support throughout this journey. 5 Chapter One: Introduction In 2017, the Chugach Alaska Corporation, an organization representing the political interests of the Alaska Indigenous Peoples within the Chugach region, requested the return of a group of nine objects from a funerary context, comprising wooden masks and a baby basket, that had been in the possession of The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, SPK), to its creator communities1. As part of the SPK, the Berlin Ethnological Museum had been curating the objects since the late 1880s and upon receiving the request, engaged in provenance research that soon revealed that the objects in question had been looted by Norwegian captain, explorer and amateur ethnologist Johan Adrian Jacobsen (1852 – 1947) between 1882 and 1884. In May 2018, the objects were successfully restituted and subsequently curated by Chugach community centers and local museums (The New York Times 16 May 2018). This example illustrates recent developments relating to colonial collections in European institutions that have not only informed new research approaches and projects but have also become a matter of politics. On the one hand, colonial provenance research has begun to shed light on the complex webs of diverse actors contributing to the formation of museum collections (e.g. Förster et al. 2018). Especially regarding the establishment of many German ethnological museums, Adrian Jacobsen has played a vital role in assembling thousands of objects from various continents throughout the late nineteenth century. Originally commissioned by the former Königliches Museum für Völkerkunde (Royal Museum for Ethnology) in Berlin, Jacobsen’s collections are

    AB SEK II Anders sein / Internationale Beziehungen / Macht und Ohnmacht / SEK II: Imperialismus Kultur und Vergnügungen /Kolonialismus / Kaiserzeit Hagenbecks „Völkerschauen“ Schon im römischen Reich und wieder im Absolutismus wurden in Europa Menschen aus entfernten Weltgegenden wegen ihrer fremden Lebensweise und ihres anderen Aussehens ausgestellt. Es waren meistens Menschen aus Ethnien, deren Gebiet erobert wurde. Eine Blüte erfuhren diese „Menschenzoos“ in der Zeit des Kolonialismus. Im deutschen Reich war der Hamburger Carl Hagenbeck ein Großunternehmer in diesem Gewerbe. Seine Anwerber begaben sich in Kolonien und abgelegene Weltgegenden und versuchten, möglichst große Gruppen der dortigen Einwohner zu einem Aufenthalt in Europa zu bewegen – mit Überredungskraft, finanziellen Anreizen und auch mittels Druck. Carl Hagenbeck eröffnete seine erste Menschenausstellung mit Lappländern 1874 in Hamburg, dann folgten Berlin und Leipzig. 1876 kamen drei „Nubier“ nach Deutschland. 1880 folgten die Inuit, von deren Aufenthalt die untenstehenden Schriftquellen stammen (Siehe auch „Zeitgenosse“ Abraham Urikab). 1884 organsierte Hagenbeck eine „Kalmücken“ (richtig Oiraten) – Schau, darauf folgte eine Ceylonschau. Alle Schauen wurden so inszeniert, dass künstliche Gebäude im „Stil“ des Herkunftslands als Behausungen zu sehen waren und die Fremden „ihre“ Handwerke, Gesänge und Tänze vorführten. He specializes in eighteenth- century historical, political and anthropological culture. He has recently researched on living ethno- exhibitions in nineteenth-twentieth century Italy and is currently working on a project on European representations of China 1750-1860. ABSTRACT This essay dwells on the concepts of ‘human zoos’ and ‘living human exhibitions’, in order to show that the first was a particular case of a larger family of cultural practices in early modern and modern Europe, where the appropriation of human ‘others’ was inspired by the will to exercise the ‘power of the gaze’. Human aliens were repeatedly and often voluntary victims of abduction from their countries of origin and public exhibition in several different venues in European cities according to widely diffused practices of ‘public othering of the human body’, which was made available to the observation of the Western gaze. The great nineteenth-twentieth century world expositions offered one of the most influential contexts for such ethno-shows, innovating the pre-existing performances in several ways, in particular by taking over the ‘human zoos’ format. It would be partial however to interpret the latter only in terms of the obvious aspects of ‘animalisation’ of human ‘others’ and racism. Public exhibitions of living humans ‘other’ were in fact complex performances involving ideas of civilizing and Christianizing tasks and occasioned unexpected reactions on both sides of the exhibitions, so that to reduce the latter to a mere expression of power and racist domination means to miss important aspects of the complex relationship between exposer and exposed.

The study centers on the ancient societies of the Alutiiq, Yup’ik and a part of the Inupiat, communities that share a series of com- mon features, and sees their festive and ceremonial activities as components of the strategies implemented to maintain control over social reproduction. This review of the historical and ethnographic sources identifies the authors and the studies that provide the most pertinent data on the subject. This study examines the question of why China’s industrialization was slow between 1865 and 1895 as compared to contemporary Japan’s. Industrialization is measured on four dimensions: sea transport, railway, communications, and the cotton textile industry. I trace the difference between China’s and Japan’s industrialization to government leadership, which includes three aspects: direct governmental investment, government policies at the macro-level, and specific measures and actions to assist selected companies and industries.
