Biota Neotropica. 18(2): e20170444. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611-BN-2017-0444 Abstract: Cloud forest ecosystems contain unique flora and fauna characterized by high levels of richness and endemism. However, this ecosystem is one of the most threatened because of land-use changes stemming from anthropogenic activities. Therefore, biological inventories are necessary to adequately assess the effects of land-use changes on species now and in the future. In this study, we conducted an inventory of plants and terrestrial vertebrates (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) in three fragments of cloud forest in southwestern Mexico. Field work was carried out for 15 days per biological group during distinct time periods (2005-2008). Conventional methods of species capture and observation were employed to record species. Recorded species were then categorized based on their endemism and risk category. A total of 67 species of plants, 17 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 93 species of birds, and 46 species of mammals were recorded. The species accumulation curves for most taxa, except for birds and mammals, showed an asymptotic trend. A total of 56 species endemic to Mexico and four quasi-endemic species were recorded. Plants, amphibians, and reptiles presented the greatest number of species exclusive to Mexico (13 species). Six species of herpetofauna endemic to Guerrero were recorded. According to Mexican laws, 24 of the encountered species are under special protection, while 16 are categorized as threatened and seven as endangered. Reptiles and birds presented the greatest number of at-risk species (14 species). Bird and mammal richness in this study is high in comparison to that recorded in the cloud forests of the entire Mexican state of Guerrero (157 and 75 species, respectively). This data highlights the importance of cloud forests in the study area for local and regional biodiversity. Effective conservation strategies should be prioritized in cloud forests, as this ecosystem is poorly represented in natural protected areas. Estudio biológico del bosque mesófilo de montaña en el suroeste de México: plantas, anfibios, reptiles, aves y mamíferos Resumen: Los bosques mesófilos de montaña son ecosistemas que contienen flora y fauna única, y son caracterizados por sus altos niveles de riqueza y endemismo. Este ecosistema es uno de los más amenazados debido a los cambios en el uso del suelo por actividades antropogénicas. Por tanto, los inventarios bióticos en este ecosistema son necesarios para evaluar adecuadamente los cambios en el uso del suelo sobre las especies en la actualidad y en el futuro. En este estudio se desarrollaron inventarios de plantas y vertebrados terrestres (anfibios, reptiles, aves y mamíferos) en tres fragmentos de bosque mesófilo de montaña en el suroeste de México. El trabajo de campo se realizó durante 15 días por cada grupo biológico durante distintos períodos de tiempo (2005 al 2008). Los registros de las especies se obtuvieron mediante métodos convencionales de captura y observación. Se categorizaron a las especies por su endemismo y categoría de riesgo. Se registró un total de 67 especies de plantas, 17 especies de anfibios, 25 especies de reptiles, 93 especies de aves y 46 especies de mamíferos. Los grupos de plantas, anfibios y reptiles presentaron el mayor número de especies exclusivas al país (13 especies), y se obtuvo un total de seis especies de herpetofauna endémicas a Guerrero. De acuerdo con las leyes mexicanas, se registró un total 24 especies en protección especial, 16 amenazadas y siete en peligro de extinción, de los cuales los grupos de los reptiles y aves presentaron el mayor número de especies en categoría de riesgo (14 especies). La riqueza de especies de aves y mamíferos en este estudio representa un número importante comparado con el total de especies registradas en los bosques mesófilos del estado de Guerrero (157 y 75 especies, respectivamente). Estos datos resaltan la importancia de los bosques mesófilos de montaña del área de estudio para la biodiversidad local y regional, por lo que deben priorizarse estrategias de conservación efectivas para este ecosistema poco representado en áreas naturales protegidas. As previously mentioned, this ecosystem is highly diverse and contains many exclusive flora and fauna species (Challenger 1998, Gual-Díaz & Rendón-Correa 2014). Notably, various fragments of this ecosystem are distributed in the form of an archipelago across the mountainous environments of the SMS, and each fragment has a particular biotic composition (Gual-Díaz & Rendón-Correa 2014). However, limited biological information is available on the CF of this region. The lack of biological studies on the CF of western Mexico is related to the physical inaccessibility of some sites (e.g., because of difficult terrain or lack of roads) and social problems. As few biotic inventories have been conducted in this region to date, our study serves as an initial approximation for increasing knowledge on the biological diversity

    Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). All but one of these nine species is endemic to Mexico.     Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl. The Cofre de Perote salamander is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This relatively large salamander (reported to attain a total length of 150 mm) is recorded only from, “a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating [on] a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality,” in central Veracruz, at elevations from 2,500 to 3,000 m (Amphibian Species of the World website). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl has been assigned to the P. bellii complex of the P. bellii group (Raffaëlli 2007) and is considered most closely related to P. gigantea, a species endemic to the La specimens and has not been seen for 20 years, despite thorough surveys in 2003 and 2004 (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org), and thus it might be extinct. The habitat at the type locality (pine-oak forest with abundant bunch grass) lies within Lower Montane Wet Forest (Wilson and Johnson 2010; IUCN Red List website [accessed 21 April 2013]). The known specimens were “found beneath the surface of roadside banks” (www.edgeofexistence.org) along the road to Las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 kilometers (by road) south of Highway 140 from Las Vigas, Veracruz (Amphibian Species of the World website). This species is terrestrial and presumed to reproduce by direct development. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl is placed as number 89 in the top 100 Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered amphib- ians (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org). We calculated this animal’s EVS as 17, which is in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its IUCN status has been assessed as Critically Endangered.

Litvinchuk2, Amaël Borzée3,4, Yikweon Jang4, Jia-Tang Li5, Ikuo Miura6, Nicolas Perrin1 and Matthias Stöck7,8* Abstract Background: In contrast to the Western Palearctic and Nearctic biogeographic regions, the phylogeography of Eastern-Palearctic terrestrial vertebrates has received relatively little attention. In East Asia, tectonic events, along with Pleistocene climatic conditions, likely affected species distribution and diversity, especially through their impact on sea levels and the consequent opening and closing of land-bridges between Eurasia and the Japanese Archipelago. To better understand these effects, we sequenced mitochondrial and nuclear markers to determine phylogeographic patterns in East-Asian tree frogs, with a particular focus on the widespread H. japonica. Results: We document several cryptic lineages within the currently recognized H. japonica populations, including two main clades of Late Miocene divergence (~5 Mya). One occurs on the northeastern Japanese Archipelago (Honshu and Hokkaido) and the Russian Far-East islands (Kunashir and Sakhalin), and the second one inhabits the remaining range, comprising southwestern Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Transiberian China, Russia and Mongolia. Each clade further features strong allopatric Plio-Pleistocene subdivisions (~2-3 Mya), especially among continental and southwestern Japanese tree frog populations. Combined with paleo-climate-based distribution models, the molecular data allowed the identification of Pleistocene glacial refugia and continental routes of postglacial recolonization. Oct. 2021 Interspecific Differences in Treefrog Response to Artificial Light at Night and Spectral Manipulation Understanding the effect of artificial light at night (ALAN) on biodiversity is a key research topic of the 21st Century. Evidence suggests that LED lighting may be particularly disruptive due to strong short-wavelength emissions. Spectral manipulation of LED lighting to reduce these emissions may mitigate some disturbance, although further research is required to assess its value in comparison with other techniques. The impact of LED lighting has been documented for many species, however, amphibians remain relatively under-studied. Amphibians may be particularly sensitive to the effects of ALAN due to specialised vision adapted for low-light environments and reduced mobility.

Smith INTRODUCTION By tenure of the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship from 1938 to 1940, the junior author was enabled to continue field studies that had been under way several years on the herpetofauna of Mexico. Aided by his wife, he accumulated a collection of reptiles and amphibians the study of which still continues. A brief summary of the snakes and crocodiles has appeared previously (Smith, 1943). With the aid of the senior author a summary of the amphibians has been completed and forms the basis of the present paper. The liz- ards are being studied as time permits, and a summary of them is contemplated. No survey of the turtles is envisioned. The itin- erary and list of localities visited by the collectors will accompany a later report. The amphibians comprise 10,370 specimens, or about half the total number of herpetological specimens obtained. They represent 27 genera and 146 forms. Thirty-three of the species were undescribed at the time of collecting; the specimens of them secured have formed the basis at least in part for their subsequent descriptions. Eleven of the 33 are represented only by paratypes, while 22 are represented by holotypes. Of the latter, eight are described in the present paper, while all others were described by Taylor (1940c, 1941b, d, e, 1942a-d, 1943a, b) or Smith (1939).

The Suweon treefrog Dryophytes suweonensis is an endemic endangered species from the Korean Peninsula. In an attempt to conserve the species, a translocation plan was implemented in the city of Suwon. The receptor site was a specially modified island in a reservoir. Egg clutches were collected from four nearby sites, and were hatched and reared in a laboratory during 2015. One hundred and fifty froglets were released at the new site. In 2016, one year after the translocation, calling male D. suweonensis, and newly hatched tadpoles and juveniles were recorded. Juveniles were seen until the last week before hibernation in autumn 2016. However, only a single male was recorded calling in 2017. The population was consequently considered functionally extinct. Failure of the translocation most likely arose from mismanagement of the vegetation surrounding the wetlands, and the resulting inability of the site to fulfil the ecological requirements of the species. The project allowed the development of rearing protocols for the species, and defined its ecological requirements.
