AVISO 19 satellite altimetry data and OFES (OGCM for the Earth Simulator) results indicate that the variation 20 propagates clockwise from Japan's east coast through the Tsushima Strait into the Japan/East Sea (JES) 21 and then northward along the west coast. In this study, we hypothesize and test numerically that the sea 22 level variability along the west coast of Japan is remotely forced by the Kuroshio Extension (KE) off the 23 east coast. Topographic Rossby waves and boundary Kelvin waves facilitate the connection. Our 3-d 24 POM model when forced by observed wind stress reproduces well the seasonal changes in the vicinity 25 of JES. Two additional experiments were conducted to examine the relative roles of remote forcing and 26 local forcing. The sea level variability inside the JES was dramatically reduced when the Tsushima Strait 27 is blocked in one experiment. The removal of the local forcing, in another experiment, has little effect on 28 the JES variability. -

Belkin and Peter C. Cornillon Abstract. Oceanic fronts shape marine ecosystems; therefore front mapping and characterization is one of the most important aspects of physical oceanography. Here we report on the first effort to map and describe all major fronts in the World Ocean’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). Apart from a geographical review, these fronts are classified according to their origin and physical mechanisms that maintain them. This first-ever zero-order pattern of the LME fronts is based on a unique global frontal data base assembled at the University of Rhode Island. Thermal fronts were automatically derived from 12 years (1985-1996) of twice-daily satellite 9-km resolution global AVHRR SST fields with the Cayula-Cornillon front detection algorithm. These frontal maps serve as guidance in using hydrographic data to explore subsurface thermohaline fronts, whose surface thermal signatures have been mapped from space. Our most recent study of chlorophyll fronts in the Northwest Atlantic from high-resolution 1-km data (Belkin and O’Reilly, 2007) revealed a close spatial association between chlorophyll fronts and SST fronts, suggesting causative links between these two types of fronts. Russo-Japanese Relations: Opportunity for a Rapprochement? PEGGY FALKENHEIM MEYER ince the end of the cold war, only limited progress has been made in Russo- SJapanese relations. Ties between Russia and Japan have been strained by strong, historically rooted mistrust and by failure to resolve their territorial dis- pute over three islands and a small archipelago near Hokkaido. The disappoint- ingly low level of economic ties between the two countries has not provided a strong incentive for better relations. Recently, however, there have been signs of progress between Russia and Japan. In a speech in late July 1997, Japan’s prime minister, Ryutaro Hashimo- to, adopted a significantly new approach to Russia. The early November 1997 summit between Hashimoto and Russian President Boris Yeltsin at Krasnoyarsk confirmed their intention to bring about a radical improvement in Russo-Japan- ese relations. In this article, I explore the obstacles that impeded an improvement in Russo- Japanese relations after the end of the cold war. I then analyze the recent incen- tives for change and evaluate how far-reaching that change is likely to be. I argue that incremental improvement is taking place in Russo-Japanese relations and that there now is a possibility of greater change. However, there still are a number of serious obstacles to a full rapprochement. The objects examined include one such handscroll painting, several illustrated books from the Sakamaki-Hawley Collection, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library, and Hokusai Ryūkyū Hakkei, an 1832 series of eight landscape prints depicting sites in Okinawa. Drawing upon previous scholarship on the role of popular publishing in forming conceptions of “Japan” or of “national identity” at this time, a media discourse approach is employed to argue that such publications can serve as reliable indicators of understandings -

The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory. iv To my wife, Ari, and my children, Hiroto and Mia. The settlement process of the place name of the Sea of Japan in the modern Japan and Korea geography education SHIM Jeongbo* INTRODUCTION For a long time, many studies on place name of the East Sea area have dealt with pre- modern old maps. From the perspective, the current study focuses on geography textbooks that well present the geographical perceptions of people at the modern times, the transitional period of modern times and today. Old maps have national, military, confidential, and artistic characteristics. Although the maps are precious data to understand people's perceptions on regions at the time, ordinary people could not access to them because of their rarity. On the other hand, geography textbooks in the modern times in large quantity have national, social, popular, open, and practical characteristics. Therefore, it is better to focus on geography textbooks in order to examine the place name notation tendency of the East Sea of Korea and Japan. THE SETTLEMENT PROCESS OF THE PLACE NAME OF SEA OF JAPAN IN THE GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION OF THE MODERN JAPAN In Japan, modern education system was organized due to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Schools were established, and textbooks were published. Figure 1 presents the place name notation of the East Sea in the geography textbook of elementary school and middle school of Japan. As we can see Figure 1, it is an aboriginal place name of Japan (the North Sea) and a foreign place name (Sea of Japan) were appeared at the same time in early Meiji era, and then they were used in school. -

The oil slicks have spread from the point of the oil spill to the east and north-western Bohai Sea. We make a comparison between the changes caused by the oil spill on the chlorophyll concentration and the sea surface temperature using MODIS data, which can be used to analyze the effect of the oil spill on the Bohai Sea ecosystem. We found that the Bohai Sea oil spill caused abnormal chlorophyll concentration distributions and red tide nearby area of oil spill. This AT is caused by a layer of sub-surface gas, which prohibits the identification of geological structures below that gas layer. Sound speeds were measured directly in these sediments using the Acoustic Lance (AL) in both mid- and late-September 1999. In situsoundspeeds obtained in mid-September varied between 1400 and 1550 m/s, and thus did not confirm the presence of gas within the top 3.5 m of the seafloor. However, signal waveforms suggested that a gassy layer might have been just below the depth penetrated by the Lance. -
