They are by far the largest private employers of workers, the biggest investors and the predominant instrument of production. They are rapidly growing in size, are generating sufficient funds internally to carry out most of their expansion programs, and are diversifying into unrelated activities. An established body of law specifies the rights and obligations of the people (including shareholders, officers, and employees) who are associated with a corporation in one way or another. When rights, whether constitutional or statutory, are ex- tended to corporations, the purpose is to protect the rights of these people.1 In the Supreme Court’s decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lob- by—and more generally in corporate and employment law—the firm as entity is disappearing as a unit of legal analysis. Marx on Absolute and Relative Wages and the Modern Theory of Distribution ENRICO SERGIO LEVRERO ∗ Dipartimento di Economia, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy ABSTRACT This paper aims at clarifying some aspects of Marx’s analysis of the determinants of wages and of the peculiarity of labour as a commodity, focusing on three related issues. The first is that of Marx’s notion of the subsistence (or natural) wage rate: the subsistence wage will be shown to stem, according to Marx, from socially determined conditions of reproduction of an efficient labouring class. The second issue refers to the distinction between the natural and the market wage rate that can be found in Marx, and his critique of Ricardo’s analysis of the determinants of the price of labour. Here the ‘law of population peculiar to the capitalist mode of production’ (that is, Marx’s industrial reserve army mechanism) will be considered both with respect to cyclical fluctuations of wages and to their trend over time. Moreover, a classification of the social and institutional factors affecting the average wage rate will be advanced. Finally, the last issue concerns Marx’s analysis of the effects of technical progress on both absolute and relative wages (that is, the wage share). It will also be discussed by relating it back to the longstanding debate on the Marxian law of the falling rate of profit, and addressing some possible scenarios of the trend of wages and distribution. 1. Introduction The revival of the surplus approach to value and distribution after the publication of Sraffa’s Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (1960) has led to the rediscovery of the classical theory of wages and to the critique of its neoclassical interpretations put forth by Samuelson (1978), Hicks & Hollander (1977), Hollander (1979) and Casarosa (1985). -

Guide to further reading To follow contemporary debates in organisational economics and organisation theory it is necessary to consult the journals, of which there are too many to list. For organisational economics I would recommend the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. Of more relevance to this book, in terms of airing inter- and intradisciplinary differences, the Journal of Economic Perspectives is better. The leading journals in organisation theory have increasingly given attention to organisational economics. The most important are: Administrative Science Quarterly; Academy of Management Review; Organization Science; and Organization Studies. In addition, the editors of Human Relations are keen on including interdisciplinary work, particularly from sociologists, economists and psychologists. The main emphasis of this guide is not journal articles but edited collections of readings and introductory books. Starting with game theory, Poundstone, The Prisoner's Dilemma (1993), gives a straightforward introduction to, and a history of, the theory. Avoiding the maths again, Dixit and Nalebuff, Thinking Strategically (1991), gives an idea of the applications of game theory. Axelrod, The Evolution of Cooperation (1990), is not only influential, but highly readable. Neoclassical, managerial and behavioural theories of the firm are all dealt with clearly in Sawyer's excellent little book, Theories of the Firm (1979). For more general overviews and explicit critiques of economics, Galbraith ought to be read at some point, and his book, A History of Economics (1987) is better than the many more scholarly histories of economics. Hodgson's Economics and Institutions (1988) is a more difficult and sustained critique of contemporary economics, but he gives considerable attention to organisational economics. -

The central questions of the course are: 1) Why are some countries so much poorer than others? 2) What are the main barriers to the process of economic development? 3) What are the main barriers that prevent the poor to escape from poverty? 4) Why do these barriers exist and persist? The first part of the course (weeks 1 to 6) studies the decision making by individuals and market failures as potential barriers to the process of economic development. The second part (weeks 7 to 10) of the course examines the role of institutions and politics as determinants of underdevelopment. The purpose of the course is to give you a sense of the frontier research topics and a good command of the methodologies used in the field of Economic Development. The main emphasis will be in empirical and microeconomic studies, although some applied theory papers and macro analysis will also be discussed. Previous knowledge: Students are assumed to be familiar with the basic concepts of econometrics, microeconomics, and macroeconomics. Some of the problem sets will require the use of Stata. A Stata tutorial is available on Intranet. This tutorial covers a few basic commands frequently used in Stata. If you still find difficulty working with Stata you should talk to the Professor or Teaching Assistant. Globalization and Developing Country Welfare Regime Transformation Director of Thesis: James Mosher Those arguing for a “race to the bottom” in the globalization era assume that international factors have negatively impacted the welfare regimes of developing countries. In contrast, little attention has been given to how globalization can produce more opportunities than constraints for developing countries to reform inefficient and inegalitarian welfare regimes and create new ones that support long-run economically sustainable development. In order to investigate whether globalization has positive effects on welfare, three case studies are analyzed: South Korea, Turkey, and Mexico. My first hypothesis is that the relatively minimal institutional base of entrenched welfare entitlements in developing countries allows for the reform of expensive, inefficient, and inegalitarian welfare regimes in order to adapt to globalizations demands, while at the same time providing the innovative policy space to improve the area’s most beneficial to the well-being of the majority of the population, such as health care, education, and social assistance. -

Technically, wages and salaries cover all compensation made to employees for either physical or mental work, but they do not represent the income of the self-employed. Labour costs are not identical to wage and salary costs, because total labour costs may include such items as cafeterias or meeting rooms maintained for the convenience of employees. Wages and salaries usually include remuneration such as paid vacations, holidays, and sick leave, as well as fringe benefits and supplements in the form of pensions or health insurance sponsored by the employer. Additional compensation can be paid in the form of bonuses or stock, many of which are linked to individual or group performance. Wage theory Theories of wage determination and speculations on what share the labour force contributes to the gross domestic product have varied from time to time, changing as the economic environment itself has changed. Contemporary wage theory could not have developed until the feudal system had been replaced by the modern economy with its modern institutions (such as corporations). Classical theories The Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith, in The Wealth of Nations (1776), failed to propose a definitive theory of wages, but he anticipated several theories that were developed by others. Smith thought that wages were determined in the marketplace through the law of supply and demand. Workers and employers would naturally follow their own self-interest; labour would be attracted to the jobs where labour was needed most, and the resulting employment conditions would ultimately benefit the whole of society.
