Sloan Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation for their support of this project. 0. Background and motivation Recent years have been trying ones for American workers. The unemployment rate has reached double digits for the first time in over a quarter of a century. Worker compensation growth has all but stalled. The human costs of labor market turbulence have rarely been clearer, and the value of public policies, such as unemployment insurance and job training programs, that assist workers in managing that turbulence, gaining new skills, and navigating the labor market have rarely been more apparent. And, even in the best of times, the United States’ labor market is a dynamic and turbulent one, with high rates of turnover (over five million separations and five million new hires in a typical month in normal times) but substantial frictions as well. As a result, labor market programs and regulations are key components of economic policy. Such policies help support the unemployed, provide education and training opportunities, and ensure the fairness, safety, and accessibility of the workplace. The challenge for policymakers is to design such policies so that they meet these goals as effectively and as efficiently as possible. Labor market policies succeed in meeting their objectives, however, only to the extent that they accurately account for how individuals make decisions about work and leisure, searching for jobs, and taking up opportunities for education and training. -

This inquiry seeks to establish Neoliberalism as—in the language of Barry Clark—a variant of capitalism that evolved out of retaliation of the regulated variant of capitalism. We utilize Barry Clark’s work on the evolution of economic systems in establishing the pattern of adaptation in American capitalism. Then we establish and analyze the neoliberal variant of capitalism in how this evolution retaliated against the existing system rather than adapting the preceding variant. -

Economic Justice in America: Fifty Years after the Kerner Report Joseph E. Stiglitz1 Fifty years ago, the Kerner Report on the Civil Disorders that had broken out the previous year, provided a stark description of the conditions in America that had led to the disorders. Their basic conclusion still rings: “Our Nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—separate and unequal” (Kerner Report, p. 1.) It pictures a country in which African-Americans faced systematic discrimination, with inadequate education and housing, and totally lacking economic opportunities—for them, there was no American dream. Underlying all of this was a diagnosis of the cause: “…the racial attitude and behavior of white Americans toward black Americans. Race prejudice has shaped our history decisively; it now threatens to affect our future.” (Kerner Report, p. 203). And it accomplished this through power. We have been asked to assess how things have changed in the half century. As we set about this, a passage from the report resonates: "One of the first witnesses to be invited to appear before this Commission was Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, a distinguished and perceptive scholar. Referring to the reports of earlier riot commissions, he said: "I read that report [...] of the 1919 riot in Chicago, and it is as if I were reading the report of the investigating committee of the Harlem riot of ’35, the report of the 1 University Professor, Columbia University and chief economist, Roosevelt Institute. Decision making and Keynesian uncertainty in financial markets: an interdisciplinary approach Ms Eirini Petratou, PhD candidate in Economics division, Leeds University Business School Abstract: This interdisciplinary research examines decision-making in financial markets, regarding secondary markets and financial innovation in Europe, so as to unveil the multiple dimensions of this complexly-layered world of financial interactions. Initially, I synthesise different literatures, including Post-Keynesian economics, behavioural economics and finance, and decision-making theory, in order to shape a more complete understanding of behaviours and outcomes in financial markets. Particularly, I focus on an analysis of Keynesian uncertainty in order to show the need of economic science for interdisciplinary research, on theoretical and methodological levels, and also to highlight potential links between Post-Keynesian theory and behavioural economics. After presenting the active role of decision-making under uncertainty into the creation of financial bubbles, as incorporated in Post-Keynesian economics, I support my argument by presenting findings obtained by a series of semi-structured interviews I conducted in 2016 in the UK, in order to investigate financial traders’ beliefs, perspectives and terminology about decision-making under uncertainty in financial markets. Two projects dominate the discussions: Generalized Darwinism (henceforth: GD), promoted by Geoff Hodgson and Thorbjørn Knudsen, and the Continuity Hypothesis (henceforth: CH), put forward by Ulrich Witt. As a first and crude approximation (to be refined below), GD entails the view that abstract and general Darwinian principles suit the study of biological evolution and of economic evolution equally well. The CH entails the view that ongoing economic evolution proceeds on the basis of, and is still influenced by the outcomes of preceding processes of biological evolution. At present, GD and CH are vying for hegemony in the community of evolutionary economists. GD and the CH sometimes are pitted against each other as if they were mutually excluding rivals. This paper investigates to what extent (and if so, in what sense) GD and the CH are rivals. As we shall see, part of the debate between proponents of GD and of the CH is about the very notion of ontology itself. -

This is legitimate, because ‘evolutionary’ is a very broad word, loosely denoting concern with transformation, innovation and development. But today the term ‘evolutionary economics’ is more typically associated with a new wave of theorizing signaled by the seminal work of Richard Nelson and Sidney Winter in their Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change (1982). Although there is not yet any consensus on core principles, this wave of evolutionary thinking has given rise to a number of policy developments and has proved to be influentialUNESCO in a number of sub-disciplines, – inEOLSS business schools and in institutions concerned with science and innovation policy. Citation and other bibliometric studies show that despite its internal diversity, modern evolutionary economics has created a global network of identifiable interacting researchers. Project Description Use integration to find total cost functions from information involving marginal cost (that is, the rate of change of cost) for a commodity. Use integration to derive profit functions from the marginal revenue functions. Optimize profit, given information regarding marginal cost and marginal revenue functions. The marginal cost for a commodity is MC = C′(x), where C(x) is the total cost function. Thus if we have the marginal cost function, we can integrate to find the total cost. That is, C(x) = Ȅ ͇̽ ͬ͘ . The marginal revenue for a commodity is MR = R′(x), where R(x) is the total revenue function. If, for example, the marginal cost is MC = 1.01(x + 190) 0.01 and MR = ( /1 2x +1)+ 2 , where x is the number of thousands of units and both revenue and cost are in thousands of dollars. Suppose further that fixed costs are $100,236 and that production is limited to at most 180 thousand units. Jones INTRODUCTION This Article explores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in small business within the context of community economic development (CED). Business advisors stress the importance of early legal assistance to entrepreneurs and the need for help with business planning, marketing, financing, advertising, and exploitation of the business’ intellectual property. In spite of the reality that entrepreneurs require intervention from multiple professionals, many law schools devote insufficient time to teaching across disciplines. Given the recent rise in small business clinical programs, it is appropriate to consider how interdisciplinary efforts in transactional law can be organized and sustained. Moreover, market forces press today’s lawyers to change the way they do business.
