Katalonien-Rundfahrt | 00:45 – 02:15 ONE Kommissar Dupin – Bretonischer Stolz | Krimiserie | D 2017 Mit Pasquale Aleardi, Ludwig Blochberger, Jan Georg Schütte u.a.

THE ABANDONED CHILD IN CONTEMPORARY GERMAN LITERATURE AND FILM by Heidrun Jadwiga Kubiessa Tokarz A dissertation submitted to the faculty of The University of Utah in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Languages and Literature The University of Utah August 2016 Copyright © Heidrun Jadwiga Kubiessa Tokarz 2016 All Rights Reserved The University of Utah Graduate School STATEMENT OF DISSERTATION APPROVAL The dissertation of Heidrun Jadwiga Kubiessa Tokarz has been approved by the following supervisory committee members: Katharina Gerstenberger , Chair 02/18/2016 Date Approved Joseph Metz , Member 02/18/2016 Date Approved Karin Baumgartner , Member 02/18/2016 Date Approved Esther Rashkin , Member 02/18/2016 Date Approved Maeera Shreiber , Member 02/18/2016 Date Approved and by Katharina Gerstenberger , Chair/Dean of the Department/College/School of Languages and Literature and by David B. Kieda, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the motif of the abandoned child as a symptom of postwar German memory culture in German literature and film from the late 1980s to the second decade of the 21st century. As part of German postwar memory culture, the abandoned child motif emerged in the early postwar years and established itself in German memory discourse as Kriegskind (war baby), while representing certain war- related experiences of victimization. This study focuses on the change the motif reflects against the backdrop of Germany’s unification, the surge toward normalization, and globalization. The abandoned child motif in German cultural texts at the end of the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st century is a threshold figure which is symptomatic of the past as well as the present, of the victim and the perpetrator, and of suffering as well as guilt.

Doctor of Philosophy (History), P / C if August, 1996, 421 pp., references, 250 entries. Born in 1862, Gerhart Hauptmann witnessed the creation of the German Empire, the Great War, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, and World War II before his death in 1946. Through his works as Germany's premier playwright, Hauptmann traces and exemplifies Germany's social, cultural, and political history during the late-nineteenth to mid- twentieth centuries, and comments on the social and political climate of each era. Hauptmann wrote more than forty plays, twenty novels, hundreds of poems, and numerous journal articles that reveal his ideas on politics and society. His ideas are reinforced in the hundreds of unpublished volumes of his diary and his copious letters preserved in the Prussian Staatsbibliothek, Berlin. In the 1960s, Germans celebrated Hauptmann's centenary as authors who had known or admired Hauptmann published biographies that chronicled his life but revealed little of his private thoughts.

Roy Doctor of Philosophy in German Studies Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Anton Kaes, Chair In my dissertation I examine the ways in which the concept of authorship, and its related discourses of authority, control, and artistic value, were destabilized by the introduction of the new film medium. Film not only represented collaborative work on an unprecedented scale, it was a mechanical technology that functioned without the spoken word. These characteristics resisted association with literary and artistic value, understood in the German context primarily through the figure of the Dichter (poet). This not only made it an object of intense criticism as supposedly valueless entertainment, the very way in which films were made, marketed, and received struggled to find language and frameworks to conceptualize film and filmmakers. I trace these changes through analyses of the reception of the films Der Student von Prag (1913), Phantom (1922), and Die Dreigroschenoper (1931). In particular I look at the way the writers, producers, directors, or actors of these films are represented as the originators, primary creative “voices,” or authorities of the production.
