    The Inventory of the Richard Roud Collection #1117 Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center ROOD, RICHARD #1117 September 1989 - June 1997 Biography: Richard Roud ( 1929-1989), as director of both the New York and London Film Festivals, was responsible for both discovering and introducing to a wider audience many of the important directors of the latter half th of the 20 - century (many of whom he knew personally) including Bernardo Bertolucci, Robert Bresson, Luis Buiiuel, R.W. Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Terry Malick, Ermanno Ohni, Jacques Rivette and Martin Scorsese. He was an author of books on Jean-Marie Straub, Jean-Luc Godard, Max Ophuls, and Henri Langlois, as well as the editor of CINEMA: A CRITICAL DICTIONARY. In addition, Mr. Roud wrote extensive criticism on film, the theater and other visual arts for The Manchester Guardian and Sight and Sound and was an occasional contributor to many other publications. At his death he was working on an authorized biography of Fran9ois Truffaut and a book on New Wave film. Richard Roud was a Fulbright recipient and a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor. Scope and contents: The Roud Collection (9 Paige boxes, 2 Manuscript boxes and 3 Packages) consists primarily of book research, articles by RR and printed matter related to the New York Film Festival and prominent directors. Material on Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Henri Langlois is particularly extensive. Though considerably smaller, the Correspondence file contains personal letters from many important directors (see List ofNotable Correspondents). The Photographs file contains an eclectic group of movie stills.

I heard a ton of amazing stories during that time and we worked on several great projects but he didn't see the need for me to use a computer. That was the reason I left his office. Years later he invited me to work with him on the 2008 Beijing Olympic competition. In the design charrettes he and I did numerous drawings but I did much of my work on a tablet computer. In consequent years we met for lunch and I showed him my projects on an iPad. For the first time I saw a glint in his eye towards that profane technology. I arranged for an iPad to arrive in his office on Christmas Eve in 2012. Cheryl, his wife, made sure Rich was in the office that day to receive it. ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the motif of the abandoned child as a symptom of postwar German memory culture in German literature and film from the late 1980s to the second decade of the 21st century. As part of German postwar memory culture, the abandoned child motif emerged in the early postwar years and established itself in German memory discourse as Kriegskind (war baby), while representing certain war- related experiences of victimization. This study focuses on the change the motif reflects against the backdrop of Germany’s unification, the surge toward normalization, and globalization. The abandoned child motif in German cultural texts at the end of the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st century is a threshold figure which is symptomatic of the past as well as the present, of the victim and the perpetrator, and of suffering as well as guilt.

During the collection of my secondary data, which concentrated mainly on English-language books but also includes newspapers and Internet resources, I encountered many interesting issues. These are divided here into three categories discussed in three chapters: ‘Stereotypes and Errors’ that result from the lack of knowledge thus causing misunderstandings, ‘Deficiencies’ about the absence of some films and directors in the English-speaking world and ‘Different Perspectives’ that reveal some interesting comparisons. The judgements applied to define these sections are respectively: accuracy (correctness of the facts), novelty (unknown trends) and originality of ideas (absent in Polish film criticism). During my research I have discovered the main factors distorting the perception of Polish cinema. I talked about them during my presentation entitled ‘English-Language Critical Engagements with Polish Cinema’ during the ‘Polish Cinema in an International Context’ conference held in Manchester in December 2009. Most of these issues are addressed in Chapter One, which outlines the problems that English-language authors seem to have with the Polish language, the background political issues and the lack of knowledge about some of the periods of Polish cinema.

But then he gradually gets involved in amateur filmmaking at his place of work and beyond, in film clubs and even television, attends events, learns how to use new equipment and starts obsessing about point of view, choice of subjects, editing and such like. Filmmaking brings him excitement and simultaneously leads to disaffection from his familiar surroundings; he gradually grows farther and farther apart from his small family paradise and grows interested in the outside world. His rapid education in representation – hand-held camera, long shots, montage – is counter-balanced by an equally rapid estrangement from former family and friends. The narrative of his evolution ends at a moment when, alone in the apartment – after his wife and child have left him – he turns the camera towards himself.
