The Seven Good Years in Japanese: Translating a Translation without the Original Takafumi Akimoto 1. Etgar Keret, Hebrew Language, and The Seven Good Years Etgar Keret is an Israeli short story writer who is very popular both domestically and internationally. His stories have been translated into more than 45 languages and are read worldwide. The Seven Good Years (2015) is Keret’s first collection of nonfictional essays that depict the seven years between the birth of the author’s son and the death of his father, which are, just like his stories, funny and profound at the same time. The book, which opens with a terrorist attack and the birth of Keret’s son, Lev, ends with a chapter where Keret and his wife try to make their son lie down during the air-raid siren. Some pieces in the book deal with current issues facing his country and people, such as Keret and his wife’s debate on whether they are going to let their son serve in the army in the future, and Keret’s mistaking what a German stranger said to him as racial discrimination against his people which had made him very angry. On the other hand, it is a book about his family, too. His son is born and grows up during these seven years. There are stories about his brother, who read his first story and made him want to be a writer, and who now lives in Thailand as a social activist, and one about his sister who turned to religion and became an Orthodox Jew, and one about his father, a Holocaust survivor, who suffers from cancer and passes away at the end of the book. -

This study presents an alternative approach to the novels of Franz Kafka through demonstrating that the Kafkan protagonist may be conceptualized in terms of mythic arche- types: the knight errant and the pharmakos. These complementary yet contending personalities animate the Kafkan victim-hero and account for his paradoxical nature. The widely varying fates of Karl Rossmann, Joseph K., and K. are foreshadowed and partially explained by their simultaneous kinship and uniqueness. Caught between Continents The Holocaust and Israel’s Attempt to Claim the European Jewish Diaspora Zachary Kimmel Columbia University Abstract Israel’s idea of its sovereignty over Jewish cultural production has been essential in defining national mythology and self-consciousness ever since its founding as a state in 1948. But by what right does Israel make such claims? This article examines that question through exploring three legal cases: Franz Kafka’s manuscripts, the historical records of Jewish Vienna, and the literary estate of Lithuanian-born Chaim Grade. All three cases reveal a common jurisprudential and cultural logic, a rescue narrative that is central to the State of Israel itself. To this day, Israel maintains an idea of its sovereignty over Jewish cultural production, and a study of these cases demonstrates how the Holocaust plays as decisive a role in the creation and implementation of Israeli policy and jurisprudential practice as it has in its national identity more broadly. Article After decades of legal wrangling, a Tel Aviv court ruled in June 2015 that the manuscripts of Franz Kafka must be handed over to the National Library of Israel.1 The final batch of Kafka’s papers arrived in Jerusalem on August 7, 2019.2 Despite the fact that Kafka died in Prague in 1924, Israel’s lawyers argued that his manuscripts ought to be the legal property of the Jewish nation-state. Yet by what right does Israel make such claims—even over the claims of other nations where the artists in question were citizens, or ignoring the ethno- religious identifications of the artists themselves? This article examines that question, exploring the fate of Kafka’s manuscripts as well as legal battles over two other important archives with Jewish lineage: the historical records of Jewish Vienna and the literary estate of Lithuanian-born Chaim Grade. -

This project, featuring Martin Kippenberger’s legendary artworkThe Happy End of Franz Kafka’s “Amerika” accompanied by Orson Welles’ iconic film The Trial and Tangerine Dream’s late electronic album The Castle, is conceived by Udo Kittelmann as a coexisting trilogy. “K” is inspired by three uncompleted and seminal novels by Franz Kafka (1883-1924) ¾Amerika (America), Der Prozess (The Trial), and Das Schloss (The Castle)¾ posthumously published from 1925 to 1927. The unfinished nature of these books allows multiple and open readings and their adaptation into an exhibition project by visual artist Martin Kippenberger, film director Orson Welles, and electronic music band Tangerine Dream, who explored the novels’ subjects and atmospheres through allusions and interpretations. Visitors will be invited to experience three possible creative encounters with Kafka’s oeuvre through a simultaneous presentation of art, cinema and music works, respectively in the Podium, Cinema and Cisterna.“K” proves Fondazione Prada’s intention to cross the boundaries of contemporary art and embrace a vaste cultural sphere, that also comprises historical perspectives and interests in other languages, such as cinema, music, literature and their possible interconnections and exchanges. Bialik, Dvorah Baron, S.Y. Agnon, Gabriel Preil, Yehuda Amichai, Aharon Appelfeld, Dan Pagis, A.B. Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Etgar Keret, Batya Gur, and more. This course aims to illuminate some of the factors that make this literature distinctive and fascinating. Hebrew is a language that has been in continuous literary use over millennia. Dramatic historical circumstances and ideological forces fostered the revival of the language as a modern tongue and shaped Hebrew literary endeavors up through current time. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students are expected to do the required reading, to attend class and to participate in class discussion. There will be several short written assignments, two quizzes and a take-home essay exam. This is a “W” course, which requires significant amounts of writing, editing, and revision. BGU Review - A Journal of Israeli Culture: Winter 2018 “A STORY OR A BULLET BETWEEN THE EYES” ETGAR KERET: REPETITIVENESS, MORALITY, AND POSTMODERNISM 1 Yigal Schwartz Etgar Keret was born on August 20, 1967 in Ramat Gan. His parents were Orna and Efraim Keret, Holocaust survivors. He graduated from the Multidisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel Aviv University and is a professor in the creative writing track of the Department of Hebrew Literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Etgar Keret resides in Tel Aviv, is married to the actress, screenwriter, and children’s author Shira Gefen (daughter of Yehonatan and Nurit Gefen), and is the father of a son, Lev. Etgar Keret’s first book, Pipelines , was published in 1992, and surprised his readers with its unique style. His second book, Missing Kissinger (1994) positioned him as a key figure in late-twentieth-century Israeli literature. 2 His third book, Kneller’s Happy Campers , was published in 1998, and the short story collection The Nimrod Flip-Out (Cheap Moon ) in 2002. His last short story collection, Suddenly, a Knock on the Door , was published in 2010. It is a truly extraordinary and fascinating city. A cultural palimpsest of texts written through the ages, texts that have been magnificently preserved until our times. "An old in folio of stone pages," as V. Nezval wrote. 3 A Slavic city with over a thousand years of history, but a city which at the same time, due to historical conditions, belongs rather to the culture of the West. The capital of the Czechs in which, however, an important part has always been played by foreign ethnic communities. But this arti- cle is no place to present historical panoramas and details. Our subject matter goes back to the turn of the 20 t h century, so let us stop at that. 1 Fragment of an inscription at the gates of hell which begins the third canto of the Divine Comedy (trans. C.
