Keret started writing in 1992; since then, he has published four books of short stories and novellas, two comics books, a children's book, two feature screenplays, and numerous teleplays. Bestsellers in Israel, his story collections have been published in sixteen different languages. His movie, "Queen of Hearts," won the Israeli "Oscar," as well as acclaim at several international film festivals, and his latest movie "Jellyfish" is winning accolades across the world. Keret lectures at Tel Aviv University's School of Film, and presented at MAKOM's Israel Arts Institute. -

1 Professor Naomi Sokoloff University of Washington Department of Near Eastern Languagse & Civilization Phone: 543-7145 FAX 685-7936 E-mail: [email protected] SYLLABUS MODERN HEBREW LITERATURE IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION NE 325/SISJE 490a 3 credits This survey of modern Hebrew literature and its major developments in the past 100 years includes selections of fiction and poetry by a range of writers from Europe, Israel and the U.S. Among the texts covered are pieces by H.N. Bialik, Dvorah Baron, S.Y. Agnon, Gabriel Preil, Yehuda Amichai, Aharon Appelfeld, Dan Pagis, A.B. Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Etgar Keret, Batya Gur, and more. This course aims to illuminate some of the factors that make this literature distinctive and fascinating. Hebrew is a language that has been in continuous literary use over millennia. Dramatic historical circumstances and ideological forces fostered the revival of the language as a modern tongue and shaped Hebrew literary endeavors up through current time. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students are expected to do the required reading, to attend class and to participate in class discussion. There will be several short written assignments, two quizzes and a take-home essay exam. This is a “W” course, which requires significant amounts of writing, editing, and revision. Final grades will be determined as follows: Assignments: #1. A close reading of a poem; 350-750 words (10%) #2. A summary of one of the secondary sources in the recommended reading; 350-750 words (10%) #3. A short essay; 500-750 words (10%) #4. 2 quizzes; one at midterm and one during finals week (20%) #5. -

BGU Review - A Journal of Israeli Culture: Winter 2018 “A STORY OR A BULLET BETWEEN THE EYES” ETGAR KERET: REPETITIVENESS, MORALITY, AND POSTMODERNISM 1 Yigal Schwartz Etgar Keret was born on August 20, 1967 in Ramat Gan. His parents were Orna and Efraim Keret, Holocaust survivors. He graduated from the Multidisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel Aviv University and is a professor in the creative writing track of the Department of Hebrew Literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Etgar Keret resides in Tel Aviv, is married to the actress, screenwriter, and children’s author Shira Gefen (daughter of Yehonatan and Nurit Gefen), and is the father of a son, Lev. Etgar Keret’s first book, Pipelines , was published in 1992, and surprised his readers with its unique style. His second book, Missing Kissinger (1994) positioned him as a key figure in late-twentieth-century Israeli literature. 2 His third book, Kneller’s Happy Campers , was published in 1998, and the short story collection The Nimrod Flip-Out (Cheap Moon ) in 2002. His last short story collection, Suddenly, a Knock on the Door , was published in 2010. 40 Hybridity versus revivability HYBRIDITY VERSUS REVIVABILITY: MULTIPLE CAUSATION, FORMS AND PATTERNS Ghil‘ad Zuckermann Abstract The aim of this article is to suggest that due to the ubiquitous multiple causation, the revival of a no-longer spoken language is unlikely without cross-fertilization from the revivalists’ mother tongue(s). Thus, one should expect revival efforts to result in a language with a hybridic genetic and typological character. The article highlights salient morphological constructions and categories, illustrating the difficulty in determining a single source for the grammar of Israeli, somewhat misleadingly a.k.a. ‘Modern Hebrew’. The European impact in these features is apparent inter alia in structure, semantics or productivity. Multiple causation is manifested in the Congruence Principle, according to which if a feature exists in more than one contributing language, it is more likely to persist in the emerging language. Consequently, the reality of linguistic genesis is far more complex than a simple family tree system allows. ‘Revived’ languages are unlikely to have a single parent. The multisourced nature of Israeli and the role of the Congruence Principle in its genesis have implications for historical linguistics, language planning and the study of language, culture and identity. “Linguistic and social factors are closely interrelated in the development of language change. Description In the biblical Book of Job, Job’s challenge to God—“Why do people suffer undeservedly?”—is oddly answered with God’s challenge to Job: “Why aren’t you as creative as I am?” Led by novelist and scholar Dara Horn, this advanced institute will address these twinned questions—the dilemma of divine justice and the related dilemma of human limits—through the lens of both ancient and modern Jewish literature. Our literary inquiry is designed to complement the philosophic studies of theodicy and the problem of evil. Literature offers a new way of exploring these questions—not because of some magical quality of art, but because plot, character, style and other basic elements of narrative are created on a foundation of assumptions about how the world should or could be. The role of belief and commitment in literature is essential to its power. “Divine Justice and Human Creativity in Jewish Literature” will introduce students to aspects of literary theory and history that illuminate the ways in which beliefs motivate artistic choices like genre, style, and plot structure, and then explore the effects of those choices on how writers in different eras addressed these enduring questions. Israeli Author Amos Oz Once Said About His Country
Prof. Dr. Anat Feinberg Hochschule für jüdische Studien, Heidelberg Hebrew Literature and Israeli History DKFZ, Heidelberg, 18.7.2008 Ladies and Gentlemen, Gvirotai ve-rabotai The best-known Israeli author worldwide, Amos Oz, once said about his country: “This nation was not built on the valour of the army, it was founded on books.” And anyone aware of the role which literature has been playing throughout the turbulant history of the Jewish people and into the present, will doubtlessly agree with him. In a country with over seven million residents, writers are recognised and much-respected figures. They voice their opinion on cultural and political issues and contribute extensively to public discourse. Authors such as Amos Oz, Zeruya Shalev and David Grossman sell well over 80,000 copies of any new title and the weekly bestseller list features older and younger writers, serious and trivial literature, historical novels along with thrillers. One tendency is conscpicuous: More and more Israelis read books in the national language, namely in Hebrew. Indeed, the renaissance of the Hebrew language is to my mind one of most fabulous accomplishments of the Zionist movement. The Hebrew language which for generations was merely a written language, that of the Scriptures and the liturgy, read at best, but hardly spoken, was awakened as it were from its beauty´s sleep and newly moulded in the Jewish Altneuland, to use Theodor Herzl´s name for the new home in Palestine. Indeed, Hebrew has become the language of daily life in Israel, the language which unites immigrants from Russia, Yemen, Germany and the United States, a means of communication as well as the natural fabric of literature. -

2021 - HARVARD-YENCHING FROM ENEMY STUDIES TO AREA STUDIES: INSTITUTE WORKING REFLECTIONS ON ISRAEL STUDIES IN CHINA PAPER SERIES Song Lihong | Nanjing University From Enemy Studies to Area Studies: Reflections on Israel Studies in China* Song Lihong (Nanjing University) Abstract: Having emerged from the context of enemy studies in the 1960s and 1970s, Israel studies in China is developing rapidly within the framework of area studies owing to the impetus of the Belt and Road Initiative, which was launched in 2013. This essay addresses the beginnings of Israel studies in China, some Chinese perceptions of Israel that have exerted significant impacts on Israel studies in China, and the challenges for future growth that Israel studies scholars in China are facing. Keywords: Israel studies, China, enemy studies, area studies Although Israel studies hardly existed in China before its diplomatic relations with the State of Israel were normalized in 1992, the field is now well-established among Chinese universities. China’s academic environment is very different from that of the US or Europe: our Israel studies positions are not privately funded but state-sponsored; the standing faculty and the students are non-Jewish, hence without particular emotional ties to Israel; antisemitism in its classical manifestations and the BDS movement are irrelevant in Chinese academic circles. Consequently, no doubts have been raised about the legitimacy of Israel studies as an academic field of study. From 2014 through 2019, roughly 32 scholarly monographs and edited volumes, 31 Chinese translations of scholarly books, and 172 journal articles on Israel studies were published in China, on a range of topics that are almost all-encompassing: from diplomatic relations to military affairs, from political parties to the education system, from agriculture in Yishuv to the start-up economy in Tel Aviv, from migrant laborers to the national heritage conservation, from Etgar Keret to Sinology in Israel, from the diamond industry to banking regulations. -

Israel Studies: An Anthology -The History of Hebrew Literature in Israel The History of Hebrew Literature in Israel by Michal Ben-Horin (August 2009) Introduction The history of Hebrew literature in Israel is actually made up of many “histories,” which can be traced back to literature written outside of Israel. The history of Israel’s Hebrew literature is bound up with questions of identity and self-understanding. It reflects tensions between tradition and modern processes of secularization, between homeland and exile, hegemonic culture and the peripheries, as well as ethnicity and gender differences. On the other hand, the history of Hebrew literature in Israel can also be viewed as a one-directional movement and a transition from an exilic landless literature to a literature written on the land of pre- state Israel to an established corpus written in the State of Israel (known as “Israeli literature”). This view, however, is only part of the story or one of many possible stories (e.g. Miron, 1994; Schwartz, 2000; Hever, 2002; Shaked, 2006). This essay purports neither to tell the whole story, nor all the stories. It introduces three lines of development of this literature, while at the same time being aware of its partial and fragmented perspectives. Exile and the Settlements of Hebrew The Hebrew literature written in Israel is part of an ongoing project that began in the wake of the European Enlightenment when Jewish writers began to write in Hebrew in addition to their various national languages. Hebrew at that time was the language of holy scripture, the Torah and the language of prayer. -

Teshuvah L'Medinateynu: Embracing a Return to Our Homeland A story is told of a particularly difficult impasse in Middle East negotiations between then Foreign Minister Henry Kissinger, and Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir. Kissinger looked at Meir and said to her, ''Golda, you must remember that first I am an American, second I am Secretary of State and third I am a Jew.'' To which, without missing a beat, Golda responded: That's okay Henry, you forget that in Israel we read from right to left." The message of this cute quip is simple: each of us in this room must never forget that our Judaism is not only tied to our ritual practices, it is not only tied to our cultural practices, and it is not even only tied to our personal lives of faith. Golda was reminding Kissinger that to be a Jew means to be a part of a people who have always been , from the time of Abraham and Sarah, to present day, connected to a national homeland- the land of eretz Yisrael . To be a Jew means to walk around with the sense of longing and connection. The great medieval poet Yehudah Ha-Levi wrote the following words in Spain around the twelfth century: 1 My heart is in the east, but I am in the uttermost West...A light thing would it seem to me to leave all the good things of Spain-- Seeing how precious in my eyes (it would be) to behold the dust of the desolate sanctuary. During the time of Yehudah Ha-Levi the concept of a national Jewish homeland was a fantasy -- utterly unimaginable. -
