Yet even if for the survivors of the Shoah the Jewish journey became that much more urgent and tragic as an exercise in the recovery of a lost continent, the same tension exists in the twentieth - as it did perhaps in the post-traumatic sixteenth century - between kol tuv sepharad and 'Zion', between the personal story and the collective telos, the private narrative and the public topos, the idiosyncratic and the paradigmatic. There is usually not only a tension but a trade-off between the two, a dynamic exchange between the first person singular and plural. After a lifetime of effacing the personal voice in the interstices of a taut and 'public' poetic line, Dan Pagis began in his last years to recover his autobiographical voice in prose. -

While the German language signified intellectual independence and freedom of self-definition (against one‘s roots) for Kertész before the Holocaust, he notes (based on his engagement with fellow writer Jean Améry) that writing in German created severe difficulties in the post-war era. Using the examples of Hilde Spiel and Friedrich Torberg, this article explores this notion and asks how the loss of language experienced by Holocaust survivors impacted on these two Austrian-Jewish writers. The article argues that, while the works of Spiel and Torberg are haunted by the Shoah, the two writers do not write in the post-Auschwitz language that Kertész delineates in his essays, but are instead shaped by the exile experience of both writers. At the same time though, Kertész‘ concept seems to be haunted by exile, as his reception of Jean Améry‘s works, which form the basis of his linguistic genealogies, shows an inability to integrate the experience of exile. -

The Seven Good Years in Japanese: Translating a Translation without the Original Takafumi Akimoto 1. Etgar Keret, Hebrew Language, and The Seven Good Years Etgar Keret is an Israeli short story writer who is very popular both domestically and internationally. His stories have been translated into more than 45 languages and are read worldwide. The Seven Good Years (2015) is Keret’s first collection of nonfictional essays that depict the seven years between the birth of the author’s son and the death of his father, which are, just like his stories, funny and profound at the same time. The book, which opens with a terrorist attack and the birth of Keret’s son, Lev, ends with a chapter where Keret and his wife try to make their son lie down during the air-raid siren. Some pieces in the book deal with current issues facing his country and people, such as Keret and his wife’s debate on whether they are going to let their son serve in the army in the future, and Keret’s mistaking what a German stranger said to him as racial discrimination against his people which had made him very angry. On the other hand, it is a book about his family, too. His son is born and grows up during these seven years. There are stories about his brother, who read his first story and made him want to be a writer, and who now lives in Thailand as a social activist, and one about his sister who turned to religion and became an Orthodox Jew, and one about his father, a Holocaust survivor, who suffers from cancer and passes away at the end of the book. -

For writers this question is even more crucial: should they write in the language of the place and its readers? Immigration to Israel is not exceptional, of course. What choices are open to those writers, and how are they to convey the complexities inherent in the formation of an Israeli identity? This paper focuses on two writers who demonstrate the role played by the “chosen language” in the cultural construction and deconstruction of Israeli identity. Tuvia Ruebner emigrated from Bratislava, Aharon Appelfeld from Bukovina. Ruebner shifted from German to Hebrew and back to German; Appelfeld wrote only in Hebrew. In both cases, their arrival in Israel en- abled them to survive. However, the loss of their families in Europe continued to haunt them. Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s concept of ‘translation’ and responding to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of ‘minor literature’, the paper shows how their work conveys a mul- tilayered interrelation between national and foreign languages, and between images of exile and homeland, past, present and future – all of which shed light on contemporary issues of Israeli identity. -

Children of Holocaust survivors can be split into two groups: those whose parents or grandparents said nothing about those harrowing years, and those whose relatives gave them detailed accounts of their experiences. I belong to the first category. Although my father’s family had, like all the Jews of Chernivtsi (known in Yiddish as Chernovits), been crammed into a ghetto, he never told any of us children about it. Whenever I asked about his experience, his reply was, “I don’t remember.” The subject was probably too painful for him to discuss. But Aliza Augustine and Janet R. Kirchheimer are of the second category. Throughout their childhood, their relatives gave them detailed accounts of their experiences during the war. Today, both women feel a personal responsibility to share their stories with the next generation — not simply by telling people what happened, but by portraying the experience through the arts. Augustine does it through photography, and Kirchheimer through poetry and film. The two women met two years ago at a conference for children of Holocaust survivors and began discussing how they could use their art to further Holocaust remembrance. The result of their collaboration is now on view until May 18 at the Human Rights Institute Gallery at Kean University, in Union County, New Jersey, in an exhibit titled “How To Spot One of Us.” One part of the exhibit features Augustine’s narrative portraits of grown children of survivors, each displaying an old family photograph and set against a contemporary landscape photographed by Augustine during a trip to Europe in 2013. -

BGU Review - A Journal of Israeli Culture: Winter 2018 “A STORY OR A BULLET BETWEEN THE EYES” ETGAR KERET: REPETITIVENESS, MORALITY, AND POSTMODERNISM 1 Yigal Schwartz Etgar Keret was born on August 20, 1967 in Ramat Gan. His parents were Orna and Efraim Keret, Holocaust survivors. He graduated from the Multidisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel Aviv University and is a professor in the creative writing track of the Department of Hebrew Literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Etgar Keret resides in Tel Aviv, is married to the actress, screenwriter, and children’s author Shira Gefen (daughter of Yehonatan and Nurit Gefen), and is the father of a son, Lev. Etgar Keret’s first book, Pipelines , was published in 1992, and surprised his readers with its unique style. His second book, Missing Kissinger (1994) positioned him as a key figure in late-twentieth-century Israeli literature. 2 His third book, Kneller’s Happy Campers , was published in 1998, and the short story collection The Nimrod Flip-Out (Cheap Moon ) in 2002. His last short story collection, Suddenly, a Knock on the Door , was published in 2010. 40 Hybridity versus revivability HYBRIDITY VERSUS REVIVABILITY: MULTIPLE CAUSATION, FORMS AND PATTERNS Ghil‘ad Zuckermann Abstract The aim of this article is to suggest that due to the ubiquitous multiple causation, the revival of a no-longer spoken language is unlikely without cross-fertilization from the revivalists’ mother tongue(s). Thus, one should expect revival efforts to result in a language with a hybridic genetic and typological character. The article highlights salient morphological constructions and categories, illustrating the difficulty in determining a single source for the grammar of Israeli, somewhat misleadingly a.k.a. ‘Modern Hebrew’. The European impact in these features is apparent inter alia in structure, semantics or productivity. Multiple causation is manifested in the Congruence Principle, according to which if a feature exists in more than one contributing language, it is more likely to persist in the emerging language. Consequently, the reality of linguistic genesis is far more complex than a simple family tree system allows. ‘Revived’ languages are unlikely to have a single parent. The multisourced nature of Israeli and the role of the Congruence Principle in its genesis have implications for historical linguistics, language planning and the study of language, culture and identity. “Linguistic and social factors are closely interrelated in the development of language change. Explanations which are confined to one or the other aspect, no matter how well constructed, will fail to account for the rich body of
