MOLECULAR GENETICS OF AVIAN PROTEINS. IX. INTERSPECIFIC AND INTRASPECIFIC VARIATION OF EGG WHITE PROTEINS OF THE GENUS GALLUS C. M. ANN BAKER 2, Bridge End, Berwick-upon-Tweed, England Received July 11, 1967 egg white of the domestic fowl, Gallus gallus L., consists of at least ten T?ff erent proteins: ovalbumin, conalbumin, ovomucoid, ovoinhibitor, mucin, flavoprotein. avidin, and globulins G, (= lysozyme), G, and G,. In starch gel electrophoresis many of these are heterogeneous and four have genetically con- trolled polymorphisms, which are described below. (The electrophoretic patterns of many of the variants are in Figure 1.) Ovalbumin (ou locus). Alleles ou A and ou B result in phenotypes A, B, and AB (LUSH1961, 1964b). In the present paper, however, the variants are named with reference to their relative mobilities as the letter A is used in A,, A, and A, terminology for the sub-fractions of ovalbumin ( LONGSWORTH,CANNAN and MAC- INNES1940; CANN1949). Thus ovalbumin A = slow (S) and ovalbumin B = fast (F). A recent preliminary communication suggests that the primary struc- ture of the fast and slow ovalbumins differs in a single peptide (WISEMANand FOTHERGILL1966). Other ovalbumin variants have been described. BAKERand MANWELL(1 962) found polymorphism which involves a more rapid migration of A, and A, and a lack of A, in one homozygote category (A3--) ; the heterozygote (A?+-) has less of the A, subfraction than the “normal” homozygote (A,++). CROIZIER(1966) has discovered yet another variant (ovalbumin Faverolles) which has subfrac- tions extra to those of the fast and slow variants. He also found it possible to clas- sify each of LUSH’S(1964b) ovalbumin phenotypes into two subtypes on the basis of quantitative differences in A,.

  • THE OPTIMUM AVIUM INTERNATIONAL 2016 a Flashback
THE OPTIMUM AVIUM INTERNATIONAL 2016 a flashback By Adrie Brouwers, on behalf of the show committee. Translation: Willem van Ballekom Photos: Optimum Avium and Hristo Lukanov The Optimum Avium International show is THE show for gamefowl, longtail- and longcrower breeds. A few years ago I got the idea to organize this event. I knew that many breeders were looking for an event like this. Some people said the effort would be useless as less and less birds were entered in the regular poultry shows. My opinion was different and with the help of a number of enthusiastic and experienced people I accepted the challenge. Shamo. Photo: Hristo Lukanov. The first edition, Optimum Avium 2015 was organized in Roosendaal, this in a perfect location, a gymnasium school complex with two spacious sport halls. The results for this first show edition were overwhelming, more than 400 birds were entered for this show. Due to many requests and reactions by breeders and spectators we decided to organize a second edition. This second Optimum Avium International show held on the 16th of January 2016 exceeded all our expectations. More than 540 birds were entered. An unmatched number of breeds were shown, many of them never or very rarely seen on European shows. A total of 543 entered birds 411 gamefowl, 102 longtail and 30 longcrowers, large and bantam were entered. We as show committee expected more birds than in 2015 but this number was beyond our expectations. However we decided to not stack any of the exhibition cages. A second sports hall was available and added to the show.

  • Promotion Show for Japanese Breeds at the Noordshow 2015
Above: Breeder Akijo Kuroyamal with his Onagadori roosters. Photo: © Stanislaw Roszkowski. PROMOTION SHOW FOR JAPANESE BREEDS AT THE NOORDSHOW 2015 By: Berta van der Meer and Wanda Zwart (NL) At the recently held Noordshow there was a promotional exhibition of Japanese varieties, and it proved a huge success. In the middle of the hall we had a separate area entirely in oriental style. The only setback was that our foreign guests who were to exhibit some breeds could not come due to the bird flu. This meant we were lacking a few breeds we would have loved to show to the public. These works of art among chickens deserve to stand in the spotlight. In Japan, these little gems are looked at in a very different way; to the Japanese a chicken has a soul, a special meaning and history. They cherish their animals preserving these often ancient varieties is elevated to an art form. More and more people are attracted to the many rare breeds, especially the longtail fowl and long-crowers. A group of equally fascinated European breeders got together and organized this pro- motion. It is often thought that these chickens must be kept under special conditions, but in fact this only counts for Onagadori cocks if you want the tail to continue growing. All other long tail varieties can just roam free like any other chicken. During Noordshow, several breeds were presented to the public and one could ask any questions to the people mounting the displays. The long-crowers are also very special, with their melodious crowing, which can be sustained for up to 25 seconds.
