Affected vehicles were shipped with contaminated windshield washer fluid and therefore do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This action affects 283 vehicles in the U.S. and three in Canada. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. Affected vehicles were built at Chicago Assembly Plant: • Ford Explorer Police Interceptor vehicles from May 26 to 30, 2020 • Lincoln Aviator vehicles from May 28 to June 2, 2020 Dealers will flush out the washer system, and replace the windshield washer fluid, washer bottle neck, washer pump assembly, fluid level sensor, and front and rear wiper blades. Dealers will also inspect and repair paint and exterior components, if necessary. Safety recall of select vehicles for potential lack of seat restraint in the event of a crash Ford is issuing a safety recall for: 1. Certain 2018-20 Ford F-150, 2019-20 Ford F-Series Super Duty, 2018-19 Ford Explorer and 2019-20 Ford Expedition vehicles with a manual driver and/or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanism, and 2. Certain 2020 Ford Explorer and 2020 Lincoln Aviator vehicles with rear outboard seats with manual seat-back recliner mechanisms. Affected vehicles may be missing the third pawl required for seatback strength. A seatback with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. This action affects 483,325 vehicles in the United States and federal territories, 58,712 in Canada and 8,149 in Mexico. Details are as follows: 2017 Ford F-150 and Mustang vehicles • Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 935 2017 Ford F-150 and Mustang vehicles for ARC passenger air bag inflators. Ford was notified by Takata, a supplier that uses the inflators in airbag modules, of an abnormal deployment of ARC’s passenger airbag inflator during testing conducted at Takata’s engineering facility. • In the affected vehicles, the ARC inflator may rupture during a front passenger airbag deployment resulting from a crash which may result in metal fragments striking vehicle occupants and causing serious injury and death. • Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this issue. • Affected vehicles include: • 2017 Ford F-150 built at Kansas City Assembly Plant, July 20, 2017 to Aug. 1, 2017 • 2017 Ford Mustang built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, July 20, 2017 to Aug. 1, 2017 • The recall involves approximately 935 vehicles in North America, including 650 in the United States and federalized territories, 279 in Canada and six in Mexico. Ford Motor Company Pollution Prevention Case Study Recycling and Source Reduction at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant DESCRIPTION OF THE FACILITY Ford Motor Company has manufactured and assembled over 10 million automobiles at the Chicago Assembly Plant since it opened in 1913. The plant, which produces the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable from components manufactured at other locations covers 2.7 million sq. ft. and is traversed by a 23 mile-long assembly line. Activities performed at the plant include welding of sheet metal components to form vehicle bodies, the application of sealers and paint as well as installation of chassis, powertrain and trim components. With over 2,750 employees, Chicago Assembly produces more than 66 cars per hour and consistently ranks as one of the top North American automotive facilities in production as well as initial vehicle quality. DESCRIPTION OF THE OPPORTUNITY BEING ADDRESSED The Chicago Assembly Plant is committed to protect the environment by striving to continually improve processes that minimize waste and pollution and by setting environmental objectives and targets, which meet or surpass legal expectations. One of the plant's significant environmental objectives has been the reduction in packaging waste and the volume of solid waste through collaborations with parts suppliers and outside contractors. DESCRIPTION OF THE IMPROVEMENT In 1996, with the assistance of Waste Management, Inc., the Chicago Assembly Plant began a waste minimization program to reduce its manufacturing waste through source reduction and recycling actions. The project has focused on wooden pallets and cardboard waste and from 1996 through 1999, the source reduction and recycling of these materials has obviated their manufacture and disposal, thereby conserving the following resources1: · 563,000 mature trees, 24% of which were saved by the reuse of 450,000 pallets at the plant.
